Doriden/glutethimide Availability (Top voted first)
UpdatedDoes anyone know where one could obtain glutethimide or it's brand name Doriden (CIBA Company)? Am in Canada where Doriden was discontinued in late 1980s and I was told Doriden discontinue was international. Perhaps there is now a generic form containing glutethimide available now as I would assume CIBA trademark rights would have by now expired. As the benzodiazapine replacement meds for Doriden are more addictive and dangerous (especially if mixing with alcohol & other drugs) it sure would be great to be able to go back to Doriden or glutethimide which were more effective and safer. A shame that the public was switched over to benzodiazipines (i.e. lorazapam, diazapam) when a better/safer product was available all in the name of profits and economics. Any help out there is most appreciated.
Doriden (glutethimide) is discontinued worldwide. The US banned it in '93 because of the abuse of it together with codeine which produced a strong euphoric opiate type effect. They were known as "hits" on the street, a "one on one" which was one Doriden and one codeine # 4.
Yes I know Doriden (Glutethimide) was a good med but like I said they are not manufactured anywhere by any Pharmaceuticals company. Use of Doriden with Codeine was big in my area of NJ. Ciba manufactured Doriden at one time and the tablets were stamped CIBA on them. Anyway, together they produced a very long lasting euphoric blissful peaceful warm feeling type of effect somewhat comparable to opiates but much better. In the US the DEA practically forced the few manufacturers of Doriden (Halsey was one maker of generic Glutethimide) to cease and discontinue making them, that was in '93. They were available in Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria up until 2006, but couldn't be exported to any other countries. I think they were made by a company called Terapia Pharmaceuticals over there. Doriden was also available in them countries in combination with Amobarbital and Promethazine in a medication called Tardyl, used for insomnia. If that couldn't put you to sleep I don't know what else could. It contained 125mg of Doriden (Glutethimide), 50mg Amobarbital and I think 25mg Promethazine. A little overkill in my opinion. Like I said, finding some Doriden today would be like finding the holy grail. It's a dream of mine, but probably won't come true. To anyone who wants to learn more about how it worked I can explain in further detail. It has something to do with a liver enzyme that induces the codeine to convert to eighty to ninety percent morphine instead of the usual ten percent conversion. That combined with the sedative hypnotic effect of the Doriden made for something that was really special, to me anyway. Thank you.
They were also called 'loads'. Or Dores and 4's. Extremely addictive and consisted of one Doriden and two #4 codeine. It was great for pain relief.
Was one of my favorites! Just spoke with a girl who said her sister gets Doriden and is adamant about it, but I still have my doubts....She could be mistaken. I'm in Erie, PA where the combination was once very popular...The most common name for them were "Sets".
No Glutethimide is currently manufactured anywhere in the world. Yes I am well aware of the Doriden/Codeine combination, it was pretty pleasant and euphoric. But as far as finding Doriden it would be like finding the holy Grail.
Re: Joseph (# 115)
I have lost all hope of ever finding my beloved Doriden (Glutethimide) again. It was so readily available in the eighties and early nineties but then the government had to get involved and ruin a good thing, like always. There probably is some mom and pop pharmacy in the midwest somewhere that still has them on a dusty old shelf. And they probably would still be good if they were kept cool and out of sunlight. Yes, Doriden and codeine were the best. Nothing can compare to them.
Wish I could say that I found a source for Doriden (Glutethimide) but I've lost all hope of ever being re-united with Doriden ever again. They were the best, particularly with Codeine #4. The government has to ruin everything, don't forget they know what's best for you
Re: Fred (# 119)
That's kind of tricky, usually when you see that they are either talking about 1 MG of Glutethimide in more than 10 milliliters of ethanol (basically alcohol) or some other solution. Or they often mislead people by DL-Glutethimide, which is the breast cancer medication Cytadren, which was developed by none other than Ciba. Despite the similarity in names that's about it. Has no sedative effect or liver enzyme inducer effects at all. Been there and done that a few years after they were discontinued in the US. I can only reminisce about the glory days. You should see some of the cases that I've read about online. One is US vs Lartey, another is US vs Milicia, and US vs Ekinci. Check them out, unbelievable. Fred, I wish I had some good news, the other night I was reading that the FDA just approved a medicine for daytime sedation called Doriden-Sed 100 MG. The article was from 1968. The cartels should do something.
love love love!!! I was devastated when I heard they were going kaput!!! Would love to get my hands on em now!!! Willing to pay high cost!!!!!
I had a few friends die because they fell asleep and drowned in their own vomit.
Re: Patrice (# 8)
Yes Patrice, Doriden could be lethal. As for the Benzo family, the only way they can be lethal is if you choked on the pill trying to swallow it. I still have dreams about them occasionally. If you want to talk further about the chemistry of the interaction of Doriden with Codeine you can write me back.
Like I stated previously, no Glutethimide is manufactured anywhere, sadly the DEA practically forced the last manufacturer in the US, Halsey Drug, who made the HD 550 tablets, to discontinue them. There was practically no legitimate use of Doriden by that time. The Benzo family of drugs superseded the use of Doriden, Noludar, Quaalude, Tuinal, etc... I too used Doriden and Codeine combination for about ten years, they were known as "Cibas and Codeine" in my area of New Jersey. Ciba manufactured Doriden in the beginning, in fact they synthesized it, and the tablets were stamped CIBA on them. They were very euphoric, blissful and long-lasting. I still dream about those days. They made you feel like you loved everyone, and everyone loved you. They also made you very social and talkative, when you were able to talk that is. And like I said before, they were used in a few eastern European countries until the early 2000's. Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria. The Glutethimide induced a liver enzyme that made the Codeine convert into 80 to 90% morphine instead of the usual 10%, then combined with the sedative-hypnotic effect of the Glutethimide and you had something special. There must be someone, somewhere with an old bottle of Doriden in their medicine cabinet. If kept cool and out of the light they can remain effective for quite a few years.
Re: Joseph (# 10)
Sorry for my English but in Hungary, Romania it's still available. Be kind and don't write bulls***.
Re: Dusan (# 11)
Really, in the Tardyl combination or 500 mg Glutethimide tablets? I will contact a travel agent to book a flight to Budapest as soon as possible.
Re: Dusan (# 11)
What name is the drug under there and as the other guy ask is it doriden alone or mixed with barbituites? Cuz I wanna call his travel agent as well.passports ready or maybe just have them mailed. Thanks R
Re: Joseph (# 32)
I'd definitely be interested in knowing how you make out with that if you decide to take the plunge. I've been searching under Glutethimid which is the way its spelled in Romania and eastern Europe, thinking I may have more luck that way but unfortunately many sites are not in English and I'm not sure the translation filter is capable for a good portion of the sites that come up. Plus I don;'t have a whole lot of time to devote to searching. I do what I can, when I can. It would be very funny if it turns out we knew each other back in the day. The Jersey "hits" crowd was small and many of my old friends died of OD when they switched to H after the demise of Glutethimide. Not a lot of us left. I'm happy I never went that route. I was always squeamish of taking anything that wasn't produced in a legit pharmaceutical company. good luck.
Re: Joseph (# 34)
I'm in Essex as well. I too was on MMT for 3 years due to Oxy's but have been off the program and still clean for 4 years now. I'm saving myself for one day when a miracle happens or perhaps when I get so old that it won't matter anymore.
Re: fred (# 35)
Small world. Where the ones you were getting from Bulgaria made by Terapia Pharma? They were actually a Romanian pharma company not Hungarian as I stated previously. This company online insists that they are not bogus, but they are asking 20.00 per tab, min order 30 tablets. What do you think? You probably seen their site online if you search for Glutethimide. I am going to ask if they can send a 5 tablet sample. I have to reunite with my beloved Glutethimide and Codeine at least one more time in my life as I'm a bit over 50 right now.
Re: Joseph (# 36)
That is an awful big risk with your funds if you had to get 30 and don't think I would do it. If they'll do 5 I'd probably take the risk though. I do believe it was Terapia that made them. Definitely not USV. Will they send you a picture? The photo I've seen was a stock photo and I think its the same place you're referring to. There are a few chemical companies in China but looks like you'd have to buy a 50 gal drum of it... Imagine that... I'd be dead in a matter of weeks...lol, but smiling all the way... Talking to anybody that would listen (we used to call it ciba talking).
Re: Joseph (# 39)
If they have usv 354 THEN THEY ARE DEFINITELY GOING TO BE BOOTLEG, OR VERY OLD. IF THEY'LL DO 5 I WOULD PROBABLY TAKE THE PLUNGE. You'll still need to get the other half though. Although when I got them from a Romanian Pharmacy I paid like $65 for 30 - 250mg.
