I was laid off from my job after 18 years!!! I have been taking OxyContin 60 for over 5 years now for chronic pain. I have applied to Purdue for their patient assistance program to receive free OxyContin. Dr. Has been in touch with them but it takes at least four weeks to receive the medication. She is presently looking up the alternative medications that I can take in between now and the delivery of my medication from Purdue. Can anyone help me with the alternatives? I'm a wreck and so worried that whatever I'm going to be given will not work as well as the OxyContin 60. ## You may want to talk to your doctor about trying the time released Morphine, the name brand is MS Contin, but it's also available as a generic. It isn't as potent as Oxycodone, so you'd need a hi...

I am needing to find a pcp that will also do my pain management as I have many health issues & would like to be under the care of 1 dr. I take time released & breakthru pain meds. I live in the St Paul Mn area. Thank you ## Hello, PJ! How are you? I'm sorry, but that is no longer possible. Due to the new regulations that were put in place last year, PCPs are no longer allowed to prescribe such medications on a long-term ongoing basis. You'll have to see a pain management specialist for them, now. Can anyone recommend a good PM doctor in that area? ## There no new regulations or laws that state you must see a pain management dr to be treated for chronic pain. PCP's aren't treating chronic pain like they use to and they are referring most patients to pain managemen...

The Methadone is also very strong. And yes, it is also true that Medicaid does not cover some medications, such as the time released Oxycodone, due to the problems with abuse and diversion of it. It really sounds like your doctor is presc...

what drugs are long acting for chronic pain ## There are several on the market, the ones most commonly used are 12 hour time released version of Morphine and Oxycodone, sold under the brand names MS Contin and Oxycontin. They are both narcotic medications: There is another narcotic called Fentanyl, it is sold as a time released patch, under the brand name Duragesic. These all, of course, require a doctor's prescription and carry common side effects, such as: nausea, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation. My primary dr has me on 10 mg percocet, 2 every 4 hrs for chronic/severe leg pain but it has lost it's effectiveness. I have appt w/pain mgt clinic on the 18th for the 1st time and am hoping they rx something stronger & definitely something that lasts longer. I haven't slept a full night in almost 2 years due to waking up in pain, taking meds, waiting for them to kick in and waiting to fall asleep again. Does anyone have an educated guess on what they may rx or what works well for this problem? Just curious and very excited at the prospect of having this pain under control. ## There are actually several time released medications that they may choose from. I am taking 30 mgs. Oxycodone up to 3 pills per day for severe back pain. Years ago I was on Oxycontin and don't remember the mgs. What is the difference between these two medications. I believe Oxycontin is stronger if they are the same dosage, is that correct? ## Hello, Candy! How are you? Oxycodone is the active ingredient in Oxycontin, it's just in a time released formulation that's designed to slowly release the medication over a period of 12 hours. So no, neither is stronger. It's just that the regular Oxycodone that you're taking now is released all at once, within 15 to 20 minutes of your taking it. This medication carries the risk of being habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, dry mouth and constipation. Is there anything else ...

What is opana a equal to in lotabs 10 ## Hello, Renee! How are you? Not factoring the effect of the Acetaminophen in the Lortab, you'd need 30mgs of the Hydrocodone to be equivalent to each 10mg Opana. However, it also should be noted that the Lortab is not time released, like the Opana ER, so it's pain relieving effects won't last as long throughout the day and due to the Acetaminophen in the Lortab, it isn't safe to take multiples of them, unless your doctor specifically approves. Even then, you have to make sure not to exceed 3,000mgs a day, or you risk overdose toxicity. The FDA classifies these medications as being narcotic analgesics, so they carry the risk of being habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth and constip...

can i use desval er 250 mg for life long AS IM SUFFERING FROM PAIN IN LEFT SIDE OF MY BODY AS I STOP USING THESE TABLETS ## Hi, Raju! I'm sorry to hear that. What are you taking them to treat? Is your doctor aware that you're taking them and you've tried to stop? These contain a time released formulation of Divalproex Sodium, it is used to treat various mental health issues. And since it works on brain chemicals, a sudden withdrawal of it could cause symptoms such as what you've experienced. These types of medications are usually slowly tapered to prevent the worst of the withdrawal/rebound effects. Learn more Desval ER details here.

My dr. said it lasts 8 hours but it only lasts me about 4 hours, he doesn't believe me. ## Hello, Nagin! How are you? The medication is intended to be slowly released over the given time period, but it may be that it's not the right dosage or medication to alleviate your pain. We are all different and what works for one person may not work for another. Can I take oxycodone and dilaudid and be on the fentanyl patch at the same time safely? ## Hello, Hauler! How are you? Has your doctor prescribed all of these? It's odd to be on 2 regular release medications, as well as the time released patch. Usually, just one regular release is prescribed for breakthrough pain. The FDA classifies this medication as a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation. Taking too much can create the risk of overdose, especially if you aren't opiate tolerant. ## Was on Dilaudid for hip replacement. Horrible drug to get off of. Am in withdrawal now. I have a client who wears fentanyl patch. Can she take tramadol while wearing this patch? ## Yes, there are many occasions when different pain medications are prescribed together to give better pain control or to get pain relief faster, while waiting for a time released medication, like the Fentanyl patch, to being working. She should be informed, however, that they both can cause CNS depression, so she has to watch for signs of severe problems, like lowered breath rate, lowered heart/pulse rate and low low blood pressure. It can also cause more side effects than usual, so she may experience worse dizziness, drowsiness, nausea and constipation. Also remember that any other medication and medical conditions must be taken under consideration when using medications, so make sure her doctor...

Pills marked with TCl are over the counter products, which are available as generics and store brands in many different stores. I can't find a listing for this one, because over the counter products are not required to be logged in the databases, like prescription medications are.
