Parkinson's disease (also known as Parkinson disease, Parkinson's, idiopathic parkinsonism, primary parkinsonism, PD, hypokinetic rigid syndrome/HRS, or paralysis agitans) is a degenerative disorder of the central nervous system. The motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease result from the death of dopamine-generating cells in the substantia nigra, a region of the midbrain; the cause of this cell death is unknown. Early in the course of the disease, the most obvious symptoms are movement-related...

Is it safe to give Dilaudid to patient who is on Levocarb 100/25, 12 pills daily and Levocarb CR 100/25, 6 pills daily? ## Hello, Janie! How are you? I didn't find any problems or interactions listed between these medications, but the final decision is always up to the patient and their doctor. The FDA classifies Dilaudid as a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation. Are these the only medications they are on?

My mother has Parkinson's (we think) was on Sinimet and Carbadopaleva and they took her off of that and now put her on Abilify and Ultram and now she can't talk suddenly and cries and is suicidal. For 3 years we have felt she's been overdrugged. Her mind is OK until they pump more drugs in her. ## Low Dose Abilify increases dopamine and increases mood. High dose abilify blocks dopamine. It sounds like the doctor needs to reconsider the dose ASAP. See Below: How Abilify works: Burris KD, Molski TF, Xu C, Ryan E, Tottori K, Kikuchi T, Yocca FD, Molinoff PB.

I have essential tremor and I have recently been prescribed chlorthalid. I would like to know if there is newer information on the side effects of chlorthalid and Parkinson disease? ## Hello, Danny! How are you? I've not found any warnings or contraindications for those taking it that have Parkinson's. However, as listed by the FDA, it may cause musculoskeletal weakness, as side effect, which may make the tremors seem worse. Other side effects may possibly include nausea, dizziness, headache, increased urination and dehydration. Have you also checked with your doctor to be sure?

Given to much of the drug. Added an extra pill to his night time pills. Have trouble with seeing things ## Hello, Ben! How are you? How much is he taking? The typical side effects, as listed by the FDA, may possibly include nausea, blurred vision, headache, irritability and insomnia. However, hallucinations have been reported to occur in about 1 to 5% of patients that take it. Has his doctor been informed?

Are there any generic versions of this tablet either er or direct version which contain different coloring ingredients than the original sinmet product? ## @Dr. Perry, From what I could gather, Sinemet (Carbidopa + Levodopa) by Merck Pharma reportedly contains the following inactive ingredients: hydroxypropyl cellulose + pregelatinized starch + crospovidone + microcrystalline cellulose + magnesium stearate. NOTE: FD&C Blue #2 are also present in the 10mg/100mg and 25mg/250mg dosage forms; whereas D&C Yellow #10 Lake is used in the 25mg/100mg dosage form. As far as an alternative goes, I did notice that Sandoz makes a generic Carbidopa + Levodopa (w/ the addition of Entacapone) marketed for treating similar conditions, but does have a different list of inactive ingredients: corn ...

I was told by a neurologist that Espiride can cause Parkinson's disease. Is this so? ## No, there is no way to definitively say that any medication can cause it. According to U.S. FDA and NIH reports, the exact causes are still unknown and research is ongoing. Some medications may aggravate the symptoms, but predominantly there is an underlying neurological issue that must be in place, in order for other environmental factors, such as lifestyle and medications, to cause it to erupt, or worsen. Most commonly, it is known to be diagnosed in people over 60 years old, but sometimes, it has shown up in people as young as 40. Is there anything else I can help with?

I can certainly understand your concern since there's not a whole lot one can do to escape the side effects of a fused disc. However, you may want to consider approaching a physical therapist about various types of stretching and/or yoga exercises that you can do at home in order to help keep things in proper alignment w...

My sister has parkinsons and quite a lot of movement. Has this drug been tried for parkinsons? ## Tetrabenazine is actually contraindicated for the treatment of Parkinson’s [1]. Is there something in addition to pills that I can do to help me with Parkinsons? I am 79 years old and I am mobile, fairly clear of mind, stiff in my joints, loosing my balance and falling occasionally. I am presently using my cane to stabilize myself. ## As far as natural or alternative options go, I would highly recommend any or all of the following treatments: -supplement with Vitamin B12 (especially in the form of Methylcolbalamin) -supplement with Magnesium -detox the body of heavy metals -low fat diet -more fruits and veggies in the diet -staying hydrated (peeing clear all day) -supplement with Co-enzyme Q10 200mg+ per day -supplement with Vitamin C and E in generous doses. I hope this helps! Raw fruits and leafy greens are the best medicine in my honest opinion. ## Was diagnosed...

I have had Parkinsons for the last 6 years. I am using 2x Sinimet 25/100 and 1x Sinimet CR 3x per day and 1x Comtan 200mg per day. I started using Zolnoxs 10mg 1x at 20h00 to help with insomnia. The tremors is bad in my right side when the medication is worked out and I also get withdrawel simptoms in the evenings in my left foot and right hand when the last medication starts to work out. I started relising that the Zolnox dampen the withdrawel symptoms and tremors and that the stiffness in the left side of my body dissapears after an hour or two if I don't go to sleep. On Sunday I used 1x Zolnoxs at 7h00 and 1x at 13h00 and 1x at 20h00. The tremors stopped about 85% and stiffness was completely gone. The withdrawel symptoms was gone and on Monday I was able to cut medication by 1/3...

I have bad kidneys, plus Parkinsons disease, plus have had both knee replaced. I took Amoxicilina 2000mg daily for two years straight. I never felt better, I lost 75 lbs. quite couldn't figure out whyI was losing all this weight all of a sudden then I decided it was time to go off the pills, within three months I gained 50 lbs and started feeling terrible. What is the catch? ## Amoxicillin is nothing more than an antibiotic and that is a very high dosage and a very long time to be taking it. Why were you on it for so long? It should also not cause weight loss, like that. Have you spoken to your doctor about this?

Wife diagnosed with Parkinsons disease on Jan 16, 2006. She takes Sinmet, Namenda, Citalopram HBR (your manufacture), Exelon, Vitamin D, Vitamin B, and Ibuprophen. About 20+ pills a day. She has a terrible time taking your pills (1 and 1/2 20 mg tablets at breakfast). For some reason the Citalopram sticks to her tongue and she simply doesn't seem to be able to get them down. The other pills are not very difficult. I've tried apple sauce, yogurt, honey, juice, water, grinding them up into a powder (pills do not pulverize and many granules remain in the glass). She eats a normal amount of food; slowly but normal quantity. How can I help her swallow the Citalopram pills from you? I read 'Parkinsons Disease treatment guide for physicians' by Dr. J. Eric Ahlskog. He discusses use of the following:Folic acid 2.5 mg(I would prefer L-methyfolate), B6 25 mg ,B12 1 or 2 mg. I have the MTHFR mutation: compound heterozygosity c.665C.>T?1268A>C. This defect may lead to early arteriosclerotic vascular disease or venous thrombosis and toxicity from medications affecting folate metabolism. I have a homocysteine level on the high side of normal(three times the low level). This doctor gives his patients this vitamin combo because levodopa can cause high elevation of homocysteine is associated with the above diseases.
