Is there a reason for medications having different shapes, sizes and colors? If so when was the system first developed? ## Hello, Rclancy! How are you? It isn't the shapes, sizes or colors that matter, that is entirely up to the whit and whim of the manufacturer. Some of them will use different colors or shapes to make it easier to distinguish one dose from another, but they do not have to do so. The mandate under law by the FDA, is that all manufactured prescription medications must have unique markings on them to enable their identification, in case of emergency. For all the government cares, they could all be white, round tablets, as long as the markings on them are different, so they can be traced back to the original manufacturer, as well as allowing you to discover what the pi...

I filled a prescription on April 21st 2017 that said "must last 30 days". So starting on the 21st of April and counting 30 days, my 30th day seems to be on the 20th of May. Is this correct? ## Yes, you are correct, your pharmacy should be able to alert you, when you are due for a refill. The FDA warns that this medication carries the risk of being habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth, and constipation. Is there anything else I can help with?

What are the refill guidelines for oxycontin? Can they be filled one or two days early? ## It really depends on your pharmacy, it can be filled a day, or two early, technically, but some pharmacies won't do so, thus it is best to ask them the next time you are in to pick up a medication. The FDA warns that this medication carries the risk of being habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, constipation, and dry mouth. Is there anything else I can help? ## Tamra, I was under the impression that cds II like OxyContin where not refillable. If you mean a new "written hard copy" most pharmacies will give you a problem unless it's the day the previous rx was scheduled to be complete. If you have a long lasting relationship with an independen...

I have arthritis all over my body and am in constant pain. I was on Opana ER for years with good results until a month ago when the Dr decided to change it to Oxycontin CR. I went to pain management today and have been on Oxycontin 30mg CR for a month. It hasn't been working very well and I have been having tons of breakthrough pain. I told the Dr that we needed to increase the time release and she told me that the FDA recently made changes and that according to those changes I was on too strong of a dose and it needed to be lowered! I have searched all over the web and can find no info about any recent FDA changes. Has anyone else heard of this? By the way I have never in my life abused drugs and always take them exactly as directed. ## New guidelines were issued last year by the D...

Why is the fda causing rynatuss to be removed from market. ## The manufacturer doesn't have to remove it from the market, it is up to them as to whether they do so, or submit it for proper review and testing under the FDA guidelines. The problem is due to the fact that these combinations that contain Phenylephrine were never actually tested and approved. Are there any other questions or comments?

kindly suggest for the usage of acebrophylline in children and any recommendation in any reputed guidelines i.e is it approved by fda and if it so please provide sufficient data. ## can acebrophyllin given to children and if then what is the dose. ## This is not approved by the U.S. FDA and is not used here in the U.S. It is a mucolytic agent and the normal dose for children depends on their age, for children up to 2 years, it's half a teaspoon, twice daily. Age 2 to 5 is half a teaspoon, three times a day and if over 5, its a teaspoon 2 to 3 times a day. Are there any other comments or questions? ## thnx for feedback !!

Yes, all non-approved pancrelipase drug products have stopped being manufactured and being sold to wholesalers and pharmacies because of FDA quality control guidelines which went into effect on April 28, 2010. Only 3 approved agents are now being sold: Creon (Abbott), Zenpep (Eurand) and Pancreaze (Ortho-McNeil Pediatrics). Older products will eventually be out of stock at the pharmacies as supplies run out and not being replaced with new product. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for help, or view the 3 approved products websites, which are the drugname.com or companyname.com. Hope this helps. ## This is correct, they have forced many companies to stop selling unapproved products until they are submitted for testing. This has created a shortage of some products. ## You appear very knowledg...

I have to take my meds every 12 hours. I took my first dose at 3pm. When do I take the next? ## The next dose should be taken at 3am, according to FDA guidelines. Thus, if you don't wish to be up at 3am, you may want to change your dosing schedule. What medication are you taking? Knowing this would enable me to provider with more precise information. ## 3 am and then the next day at 3 pm and so on. ## I'm taking a antibiotic for my sinus infection. It says to take it every 12 hours by mouth. So what does that mean? ## It means that you should take the recommended dose once every 12 hours. So if you took one dose at 9 am, you should take the next dose at 9 pm. Does that make sense? ## It depends on the drug. Is it time critical such as a diabetic med or an antibiotic. Diabetic me...

The dosing guidelines say to take 2 tablets every 6 hours, but previously said 2 tablets four times a day. At 250mgs, how should I take these for tonsillitis? ## Hello, Kim! How are you? Taking them every 6 hours is the same as taking them 4 times a day. The FDA lists the typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash, and diarrhea. Thus, you should follow your doctor's dosing instructions. Is there anything else I can help with? ## 2 tablets 4 times a day is like 8 am 12noon 4 pm 8pm .2 tablets every 6 hours you are only getting 3 doses in unless your going to get up again early hours to take . So 2 four times a day it is then .

I took two extra strength Tylenol at 11:00 am. How long would I need to wait to take a Percocet 5? ## Hello, April! How are you? You should wait about 8 hours, according to FDA guidelines, you should not exceed 1,000mgs of Acetaminophen in any 8 hour time period and no more than 3,000mgs in 24 hours, otherwise, you increase your risk of liver damage, or failure, which has the potential to be fatal. They also want that Percocet carries the risk of being habit forming. Is there anything else I can help with?

can you tell me if this medication is hydrocodone? it is an old prescription and I want to dispose of it properly ## Proper disposal isn't dependent on the type of medication, the FDA guidelines are the same for all prescription or over the counter medications. They recommend that you mix them in with some moist, undesirable substance, such as used cat litter or coffee grounds, place the mess into a sealed container and then put it into the trash. Alternatively, you can take them to any local pharmacy and they will gladly dispose of them for you. Is there anything else I can help with? ## I found a white oval shaped pill and needing to know what it is. It's white oval shaped and has 334 on the front and blank on the back.

If a prescription says "may fill on 2/17", can I fill it on 2/15 if it's a controlled substance? ## No, that means you can't fill it until the 17th and not earlier, according to FDA guidelines. Your pharmacy will refuse, because of the doctors note on it. What medication is it? Why do they restrict when you can get it filled?

My sister had stage 4 cancer this was one of her meds before being placed on liquid morphine. Should I flush? I found 2 ## Hello, Fred! How are you? No, please do not flush any medications. The FDA guidelines for proper disposal state that they should be mixed with some undesirable substance, such as used cat litter or wet coffee grounds, placed into a sealed container and then disposed of in your usual garbage. Alternatively, you can also take them to any pharmacy and they will dispose of them for you. This tablet is listed as being a 60mg controlled release Morphine tablet. The FDA classifies this medication as being a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation. I,m a campus police officer, and a student found a small bottle in a bathroom. He turned it over to me, and I don't know if I should destroy it, or throw it in the garbage. ## The FDA guidelines for pill disposal is to always destroy them, regardless of what they are, before throwing them away. They recommend mixing them in with something that will degrade the pills, such as used, wet coffee grounds or kitty litter and then disposing of them in the trash. The tablets you have actually contain 0.4mgs of Nitroglycerin, which is a heart medication, used to treat problems such as Angina. What is the highest doseage of Loratabs..and their colors..Private duty aide and found some pills..Need to know about it.. Thanks.. ## Well, without your posting the imprint on the pills, I cannot tell you for sure what they are, see the only FDA guidelines for pharmaceuticals in the US says they must have a unique imprint for ID purposes on each pill, which will vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, and even within one company according to dosage, that way all pill scan be indentified in case of an emergency. There are no proprietary guidelines having anything to do with size, shape, or color of any pills, capsules and etc. That is entirely up to the whit and whim of the manufacturer. So once a pill is available for generic production, it can look however they want it to look. So not...

I'm new to MSIR ER 60mg and 30mg 4 x's per day for breakthrough pain and 3 x's a day on ER. Is this too much? ## The extend release is normally taken twice a day. If you haven't been taking Morphine what you stated is too much. FDA guidelines state a patient isn't suppose to be prescribed more than 120 mg Morphine a day.

How many tablets should I take in whole is it 4 whole tablet or I have to make half of two tablet and take 4 times ## Hello, Geet! How are you? It would be best to double check with your doctor or pharmacist to be sure, but under U.S. FDA prescribing guidelines that would be 8 tablets a day, you would take 2 pills for each dose, every 6 hours. What medication have you been prescribed?

What's the difference in the pill with 227 on one side and the ones I take that have 102H? It's typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, flatulence, diarrhea, and hypoglycemia. Are you having any problems with either one of them?
