Tramadol Active Ingredient Change
UpdatedHi everyone, I've been taking tramadol for a few years for a severe spinal stenosis, knee pain both knees (work related) upper arm pain, osteoporosis arthritis, etc. When I first started taking tramadol it was for a broken metatarsal in my right foot. I was originally given Vicodin, but I made me too loopy so took it to my doctor and asked for something else, he prescribed ultracet. It was great, no loopiness at all, I was still able to drive, work, etc. This became my drug of choice for pain. I requested it when I broke a metatarsal in left foot, then a fractured right big toe. Fast forward a few years to 2008, I lost vision so I started walking and catching the bus. That's when all of the other pains started. It began with pains in my back and left leg, and leg would fall asleep while walking, but could still feel the pain, then other parts of my body began to hurt. Right leg, upper arm, neck, head, it was the spinal stenosis. I mention these things because for some people in government think that only drug abusers take pain medication. So, anyway I was given hydrocodone, but I still had a problem with the loopiness, so I asked them to change it, and I was prescribed tramadol. I took 2x50 mg every 4-6 hours, I took it with 500 MG twice a day of naprosyn. Everything was fine, until (can't remember when first noticed) about 2011, when tramadol changed, it began to cause me to have great feelings of anger one month, and the next month depression, then anxiety. I switched drug stores, but it doesn't matter where I go, it's the c same thing. I told my doctor, but all they could do was change me to a codone, or morphine. So, after all of that, does anyone know what was changed, and why? For me it was a perfect pain reliever, which didn't handicap me with a high (loopiness)

Hello, Abigail! How are you? I'm sorry about the problems you're experiencing.
However, Tramadol hasn't changed, it most likely your body that has changed with time, so you're reacting to it differently. Especially being female, as we ladies age, our hormone levels change and can cause many things to start affecting us differently. It can be even worse if you're perimenopausal or postmenopausal.
There is a new formulation of Hydrocodone available that might not make you feel so loopy. It's called Hyslinga ER and it's a time released formulation, so the full dose doesn't hit you at all once. The FDA classifies it as a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation.
It's an idea you could ask your doctor about. There are several time released ones that you can try that may help you.
Is there anything else I can help with?
