Pain Meds Dilemma

Updated

Can I get a prescription for norco 7.5 for a surgery I just had a day before I get my usual prescription of hydrocodone 10mg from my pm dr., and not get in trouble?

Hello frank. I am in GA and I go to pain management for a severe back problem. I signed a narcotic agreement that states I cannot get a pain med prescription from another dr and fill out, without getting permission from the pain dr first. Hope this helps.

Momof3 is correct, it depends on your doctor's policies and what you agreed to, when you started seeing them.

Additionally, since this is a lower dosage than the one you usually take, it isn't likely to help much.

The FDA warns that these medications carry the risk of being habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth, and constipation.

Was your surgeon not away of what you were already taking?

Why would you need the same medication at a REDUCED dosage if your already taking a 10 mg. dose. It doesn't make much sense and if you ask your doctor be prepared for a quizzical look for as most will see this DILEMA as an attempt to procure additional amounts of hydrocodone which is extreamly habit forming and pose's a risk for addiction . If your receiving proper treatment for pain control most competent PHYSCIANS hold you accountable as per your pain contract. The last thing you want is to risk dismissal and being flagged since that will follow you indefinitely.

Yes if they become aware it's a violation of a standard pain contract. That violation will get you dismissed from treatment and flagged as a drug seeker.

I had the exact thing happen to me before my last surgery. The pharmacy asks for your drivers license, runs it through computer system to see when you last had a prescription for it. If less than 30 days they won't fill the Rx. I live in Calif, pretty sure they do this in all states now since they changed the medication laws.

I have been on Morphine 30 mgs, 2 pills every 4 hours for hip and back pain. I have had surgery on my right hip and in February I am having my left hip done. Here is my dilemma, The Doc who was prescribing the morphine moved and I was automatically assigned a different Doc. When the morphine started to become less effective I told the new Doc and he prescribed me Oxycodone 7.5, 1 pill every 6 hours. It was like taking nothing so I told my Doc they didn't help at all and I would just go back to the Morphine and put up with the pain until my surgery (February 20) but he prescribed me Oxycodone 10, 1 pill every 4 to 6 hours. When I got home from the pharmacy I had 2 messages on my phone, one message was from my doc saying "get back here with the Oxy 7.5 or I will cut you off from here on out. The other message was from his nurse demanding a call back. I was floored, confused so I called them back and got the nurse. I told her I would return the 7.5's but I also let her know I was offended at her tone and that's when she started to degrade me, saying things like, I know what you're all about honey, I know what you're trying to do sweetheart, I don't like those pet names in that context but I told her I would bring the pills back if she apologized, she said she would not apologize and that's when I said F OFF and hung up. I started taking the oxy 10;s just as prescribed and found out they were not working either. I think the problem is I went from taking 60 mgs of Morphine every 4 hours to 7.5 mgs every 6 hours then 10 mgs every 4 hours. A difference of 50 mgs. This all happened on a Friday and I went through the weekend in horrible pain and some withdrawal like symptoms. I called my doc on Monday and Tuesday but he never returned my calls so I went on line and found a new Doc. Since Monday I started taking 2 10's and 2 7.5's. That comes out to 35 mgs every 4 hours, again a difference of 25 mgs. It helped a little but certainly not practical for the kind of pain I have. In the last 6 months I have fallen about 20 times even with the morphine, 2 of those times I ended up in the hospital with minor head injuries. My first appointment with my new Doc is tomorrow and I have just about run out of the 7.5's and the 10's. All of you people, with all due respect are strangers to me so I feel I can be honest, although I didn't take my meds as prescribed I did not abuse them. I am in a lot of pain, most days I try to read and watch the clock because of the pain and the withdrawal like symptoms and yes some times I will take them 15 to 20 minutes early. So my question to you is, I intend on asking my new doc to put me back on the morphine, I have surgery scheduled for Feb 20th and I made an appointment with a suboxone Doc for Feb 10. What will be my recourse if my new Doc refuses to give me anything? I will be out of everything. I only have enough meds to get through most of tomorrow. I'm 51, I played hockey, I was a boxer and I played football, I used to run 8 to 10 miles in the Yuma Az heat of 115 degrees and now I have to watch every step I take so I don't fall, its very embarrassing. Any way Thank You in advance for your advice and I wish the best of health to all of you.
