Tramadol - Serious Vision Problems (Top voted first)

Updated

My wife has been taking Tramadol for 4 weeks for hip paint before hip replacement surgery next month. It worked fine for the pain. However, she has visoin problems. She is very light sensative and wears sunglasses and stays in rooms with blinds pulled. Her pupils appear over dialated and do not responde at the same speed to light (opening or closing). This has bothered her to the extent that she holds and moves her head in funny ways. She seems to be always trying to look down to keep light out of her eyes. Her head movements remind me of the way some blind people seem go constantly move their heads. She ahs tight and soar neck muscles. SHe hold thing very close to her eyes to see what they are. She is a purchasing agent and this week is almost unable to read the paperwork to do her job. These conditions of closely examining things, and her head movements have suddenly come on in a few days and in the last 24 hours has become extrememly pronounced. See saw her pain doctor 4 days ago. He is having her come off the medication by decreasing her 200 mg daily dose by 12.5 mg e very 2 days. She saw her eye doctor 3 days ago and he reported knowing about the side effect personnaly and advised her to com e off the medication and her vision would return to normal. Has anyone had these side affects? Is the advice we have gotten good?

I stopped taking tramadol for migraine relief . The meds did help with the frequency of migraines but three months later, my vision is worse than ever. Double vision, blurred vision and driving at night is way too risky. I've been to my optometrist and optomologist. They both agree that there is nothing wrong with my eyes. I'm terrified that I may be losing my vision permanently.

Don, I am afraid that one this one I have to suggest you discuss it with your veterinarian.

The knowledge and resources I have are all in reference to drug use in humans, I am not at all familiar with the use of them in animals.

Is tramadol toxic to pure collies? Many common drugs are and my dog is having dysplasia type hip problems since starting tramadol.

try on a lower dosage, like 100 mg a day, 1 in the morning and 1 in the evening. Ive taken this med for a while. If she takes too much it could give her seizures.

Me, it's really odd, because I find the Tramadol actually helps me see better, because I can focus a whole lot better.

My results from taking nine Tramadol pills per day for Back and Neck problems is a severe change in my left eye's ability to see at all. I'm a DAV and experience the loss of usable sight in my left eye within days after receiving new glasses. Three pair are cut for me (Reading, TV, Driving) but my eyes change soon (one month) after receiving all three pair, mostly in the 'Reading' zone...Driving requires my prescription sun glass additions. Tramadol also disorients me if I'm active (walking with my prescribed cane) more than an hour at a time, or 2 hours per day.

You know what? I just started 50 mg of Tramadol for a lower back disk issue, and my vision has gone slightly blurry. I though it might be my sugars as I am Diabetic. They are a little high, but not enough to cause vision issues (and I know, I have had them before). The sugar is up as I am fighting an oral tooth infection... I have done some reading and Tramadol LISTS the vision issue as a problem... it explains a lot.

I started having blurred vision very bad and then experienced severe eye pain. Went to optham. Dr. Informed it to be scleritis. On prenidizone drops. It started healing. But noticed every time Itook tramadol it flared back up..removed meds one at a time and have reason to believe this is culprit. Also it is raising my blood pressure and pulse rate is eextremely low..see Dr soon..will take something else for the pain.

I took just three quarters of a tramadol almost three weeks ago and lost vision on the left side of both eyes. They are telling me it's from a mild stroke but I know it was the tramadol. Was hospitalized for nine days still can't see well. The MRI states that I had a mild stroke. Tramadol is very dangerous to your vision. I've only taken 1/4 1/2 and when I took the 3/4 almost four weeks ago I haven't regained my vision. I was in so much pain from trying to withdraw from clonazepam that's why I took it. And my vision hasn't come back yet. Has anyone else experience this?

I'm thankful for coming across this chat because my gut has been telling me that my dog is having vision side effects from med's. She's been on tramadol for a month and I noticed foggy blue eye pupils. I'm praying it's not too late for her eyes to recover. Has anyone had any success with steroids to reverse damage? She was taking the med's after having shoulder surgery and prior to that her eyes have been perfect. I'm so sad over this.

Tramadol is an opioid and this class of medications is known to cause these types of problems in some people, especially if she was started off at that high of a dosage.

Most doctors generally start it off at a lower dosage, then gradually increase, as needed, until they find the dosage that is effective at relieving the patients pain, without causing such severe problems.

If she's been on it for 4 weeks, then it also makes sense, because the side effect of a medication usually hit their peak around 4 to 6 weeks of use, when the body has gotten used to it.

And yes, they should wear off, with time as she is tapered off the medication.

If she doesn't see any improvement, or if her symptoms get worse, then make sure to contact her doctor immediately.

Yes! I've also have terrible vision problems from tramadol. It provoked me to have a stroke. Haven't been able to see well for over a month. Eye doctor said that fifty percent of my vision has come back. My damage is due to a stroke. Hope that your wife's vision comes back.

TRAMADOL has absolutely NO OPIATES in it like your typical narcotic pain relievers. Until very recently, it wasn't a Controlled Substance & in several countries you can buy it OTC! It does, however, cross the BBB & work on your opiate receptors but, again, do NOT listens to *****s on the Internet calling it an opiate.

Now to answer your question, it CAN cause TEMPORARY (Key Word) blurred vision if you're on a very high dose (recommended max is 400mg/day but I've received several Rx's that allow this dosage twice a day). I'm NOT a Dr (disclaimer) but I've never seen anybody have critical side effects from such a high dosage with the exception of vision problems which, if you were to take 800 mg in a 24 hour period, you're very likely to experience vision problems like reading a text (typical size Font used in a text is SMALL enough that it would be difficult to read. Of course if you have good vision, you can simply buy a, say, 1x (the weakest reading glasses they make I was told...IDK this for sure BUT I DO KNOW:) one+ reading glasses will ABSOLUTELY clear up your vision problems immediately when trying to read a text. I'm 37 yrs old & when I was initially on a high dosage (very serious car wreck: from a stopped position, i was hit - more "clipped" which is what I'm convinced saved my life - by a car on the 10 (Interstate 10) going 80mph which, almost famously, there are sections in rural areas where 80mph is actually the speed limit on the 10 - I had to do this and I have 20/20 vision!). Fortunately, this goes away as you either decrease or wean yourself off of this medicine so it's not a permanent damage, it just happens to be one the dominant side effects that happens when you take it.
