Suboxone Does Not Show Up As An Opiate

Updated

I wanna say first Im not on here tryin to be a dr people are gettin the wrong idea but unfortunately i have been on the medication for almost 5 yrs bc of shady drs(but thats another story) an know alot about the drug an thats why i am on here to try to help out others. When it comes to drug testing Suboxone does not show up as an opiate it doesn show up at all, when you go to the Dr they use a certain test that tests specifically for Suboxone.Suboxone is under the opiate category but is not actually an opiate if that makes sense, when a drug is put out on the market it has to be under a category whether its opiate, benzos, etc,so they put it under opiates, but since it really isnt an opiate it does not show up as an opiate in a drug test, its kind of complicated but if you discuss it with your dr he'll be able to explain it better

I can understand how it may not show up as an opiate. From what I read, it states it's an opiate agonist, a partial agonist, and an antagonist!!! Wow! What a wonderful concept. It has one part antagonist and four parts of the agonist. The reason it would not show up as an opiate is because the antagonist (nalaxone?) has a high affinity to bind to the opiate receptors. So, yes, there would have to be a specific Suboxone testing done. As far as this drug NOT being an opiate; this is not true at all. There are actually four parts of the opiate Buprenorphine. Again, Buprenorphine IS an opiate and is an opiate agonist that is contained in the drug Suboxone. So, as far as your opiate receptors in your brain are concerned; The opiate content wins with the 4:1 ratio against the antagonist. Confusing? Yes! But, who ever came up with this drug is a complete genius!!! I am about to start on this drug tomorrow. I sure hope it helps keep me from going into violent W/Ds! Due to MY shady doctor (who quit his practice in Feb 09) I am coming off of a very heavy drug regimen of 300mg of Morphine Sulfate daily as well as taking Dilaudid, two 8mg tabs three times daily (TID)!!! Now that's enough to kill a frickin horse! And I've been on this crap for about 4 years now. I've had 2 failed back surgeries and am about to get back on the table for my third! Anyhow, the four parts of Buprenorphine together with one part of the opiate antagonist definitely makes this drug fall into the category of an OPIATE. But, I do believe you are correct on stating it won't show up as a typical opiate in a normal urine drug screen unless the lab specifically targets and tests for the Buprenorphine in the Suboxone.

That is correct, there are reasons it may not show up as an opiate, however, it most certainly is one. You can read more about it and how it works here:

Does anyone have any other questions?

Ignoring the fact that naloxone is an antagonist, which is put into Suboxone...buprenorphine itself is considored agonist/antagonist. This is because it interacts with the kappa, mu and sigma receptors in different ways.

I have a 24 year old who has been on Oxycodone for 4 years. We now have her presummably off of the Oxycodone for 2 weeks but taking Suboxone and she is still testing "mildly" postive for Oxycodone in 3 drug tests over the last week. Two home tests and one doctor administered test. Question: Does Suboxone produce a positive Oxycodone result in a urine test?

Suboxone does not show up as an opiate or oxycodone or oxycotin. Possibly your daughter still has some in her system. What do the doctors say? What is the half life of those medications and how long do they stay in your system is all affected by how much you took and how much was built up in your system.

I also wanted to add - you said she was presumably off of the oxy, if she is taking the suboxone, then if she did take an opiate the naloxine in suboxone counteracts opiates. Naloxine (Narcan) is the reversal for opiate overdose.

Hello. Really curious because I've been reading a lot of different posts and it seems everyone has their own opinion and are sticking by it to fullest. My scenario: I have beeen clean from oxycodone for a full year. I originally started on 16mgs of suboxone a day and for the last month I've been doing 4mg a day (sometimes less). Recently I started EMT school and they dropped a bomb on me when they announced there is an upcoming drug test due to clinicals at the hospital and fire dept.) It is a 10 panel test testing for: Alcohol, Amphetamine, Barbiturates, Benzo's, Cocaine, Marijuana, Meth, Pcp, and the 2 that worry me: Opiates and Methadone. I realize suboxone is buprenorphine and does not have the same chemical compunds as methadone but many people claim it will show up as an opiate. I'm calling my doctor tomorrow and buying a urine analysis but I have to be POSITIVE. I cannot afford to be dropped out of a program that my future depends on for this kind of an error. Please if someone has an EDUCATED answer with PERSONAL experience (not just what you heard, or have been clean 3 days) please respond. Thank you so much!

Suboxone does not show up in the same category as Methadone, I have been on Sub for 4 yrs and have been drug screened for entrance to nursing school and I had no problems. I knew I wouldn't because I spoke with my Therapist and she explained to me the various testing methods, you would have to specifically test for Suboxone. I understand your worries but I think you will be fine. As my Therapist said most places use a specific type or brand of test and it is NOT specific for Suboxone. I look at it this way, you are not doing street drugs or pills that are not prescribed, even when I have gone for out patient surgery and told the nurses I was on Sub, most of the people didn't even know what it was or even have a clue. I had the anesthesiologist sit in my room and look it up on his blackberry to research it before we went into the OR room. So with that I think you will be fine and if worst comes to worst and they say it is in your system(which I highly doubt) then just be honest, honesty is the best policy. There are people who are alcoholics and go back to work after rehab so why can';t an addict in recovery also have the same opportunity to better him or herself!!
Good Luck in EMT training!!

I am starting nursing school in the fall. I have been on suboxone for a few years and am down to under a mg. I am almost off of it and done forever but I am scared I will not be in time for the drug screening. I am glad to hear you were screened for nursing school and was fine. I'd like to know how long ago that was and what type of drug screen they did?

I Don't know if this helps but I've been on Suboxone for 6 years. When i got pregnant my Doc kept me on the Subs. Rite after i gave birth to my little boy " third one:)" they wouldn't let me see him right away. Child services came in to talk me about having methadone in my system and my baby's system. I don't do any other drugs, this medicine is way expensive to waist! After they verified the info i'd already provided about what meds i was on, they apologized and brought my New man inn! People argue about what it comes up as. Depends on the test. I see this is from a while back. Maybe it Will help you or someone else. Just have to add, as popular as Suboxone is its ashame but MANY DR.s that don't prescribe this medicine know nothing about it, how it works , or what test it will show in! Even in the ER!

I am on parole. I take suboxone. It DOES show up as an opiate. Also for oxycodone. So it would be hard for you to tell. For me it showed a faint line but still showed. Everyone says no but for a 9 panel test for me it DID show up.

BUP is for bupenorphine or however you spell it. Its for suboxone.

If I have opiates in my system and I take a suboxene if drug tested will the opiate show up in my urine?

Are you asking if the sub will cancel out the opiates in a test? If so, then No. Suboxone does not cover or mask other opiates, Both would show up depending on the test. Hope I'm not misinterpreting your question.

We aren't talking about tests at a doctors office. Or tests that get sent to a lab. Rapid 9 panels, DO show up as not just opiates, but as oxycodone. Believe me or not, I've been on subs for over 3 years. 90% of the rapid 9 panels I've taken, I do test positive and I DO NOT take anything but subs... So in a sense, you're wrong. See below, someone posted why this happens. There was an fda study done because there were so many issues of this happening. And it metabolizes the same way in your body as oxycodone. Just FYI.

I too am on probation and im on suboxone and my text came up for something oxy and of course he didnt believe me when i told him i haven't took anything. but i haven't done nothing in over a year. I left their nerves not knowing why cause i know for a fact i havent. Waiting on lab work to come back.

Actually it's an opioid, not an opiate.

There is a difference.

As the person above mentioned, suboxone can show up under a test for oxy, and here's why.

The nalaxone breaks down into metabolites, one of which is called norbuprenorphine, which coincidentally is the same metabolite oxycodone breaks down into.

Not only that but the buprenorphine itself also breaks down into a small amount of norbuprenorphine.

If your drug test specifically tests for oxycodone, there is a chance you can test false positive depending on how much suboxone you take, when you took it last, and your own body. Chances are if it does show up it will be faint, but know ahead of time.

There was a clinical trial done which proves this:

I haven't taken an opiate of any sort besides subs for over a year. JUST had a pre-employment 12 panel screen show positive for "Oxy" what the hell?! So yes it can show positive for opiates. I'm here to tell you first hand. And I put it on everything I love that I haven't touched an opiate in a very long time!

Something is going on that the vast majority of people here who think they know, don't know about. I was just tested today on a 9-10 panel at my work, and tested "mildly positive" for oxy. I'm on suboxone and haven't done oxy in over 5 years. The nurse agreed to let it go as negative because the line faintly came in after like 10 minutes, but he was ready to send to the lab.

Coincidence that your story and mine are virtually identical? I'm thinking not.

Mine did too! I've always passed drug screens at my suboxone Drs office, today I took my first drug screen for my counselor & it showed up as opiates & suboxone, but I haven't been on any opiates, how is it possible I failed for them?

I've been on suboxone for only a month now & have not taken any Percocet or Vicodin since getting on the suboxone, I've passed every urine screen at my suboxone Drs office, however, went to see my drug counselor today & she pulled a random on me in which I was confident of passing as I've really not taken anything but the meds prescribed (suboxone, celexa, amtryptalene), the test she gave me tests for everything, of course it showed suboxone in my system, but also showed oxy's in my system? How is this possible? I'm beating myself up for an answer considering I haven't taken oxy's in well over a month! Please, someone tell me how this is humanly possible?
