Pain Medication: Which Next?
UpdatedHi folks,
I've been taking Norco 10/325 for apx. 5 years now. My dosage is take 1-2 every 4-6 hours for pain. I have herniated discs, injury to spine from car accident & just recently sciatica. Sciatica pain to me for a female is like labor pains that never stop. So unfortunately I have to take certain medications to help. The Norco 10/325 has not been as effective which I knew this was going to happen sooner or later. My doctor did at one time (about a year ago) offered me to see his associate that prescribes oxycontin/Oxycodone and I refused telling him that I just don't want to go to something stronger. It scared me. NOW, I have been considering it and his associate no longer is there and I'd have to go to another office, a pain clinic to get them. While in the hospital 4 months back the ER doctor spoke with my doctor and ok'ed them to give me a script for 10 percocets. which is oxycontin and Tylenol. The only difference that it made was it knocked me out and I slept. I don't like that. On a personal note, I was offered a 30mg Oxycodone extended release and bit it in half (knowing it's a ER) and oh my gosh it helped me like you wouldn't believe. I wasn't tired, I was able to move 'normal' it was wonderful! So, my question is, when & if I do go to this new doctor, and assuming I'll be getting an oxycontin or Oxycodone or possibly even percocet THOUGH I don't want the Tylenol, is a 10mg or a 20mg oxy equivalent to the strength of a 10 / 325 Norco (hydrocodone) I know they're different but strength wise... coming from taking the Norco for so long I don't want to go to a weaker or comparable drug. So what is just a bit stronger than Norco that's in the oxy family? BESIDES percocet *(SORRY for such a long post)*

Hello, Piper! How are you?
Oxycodone is stronger than the Hydrocodone in the Norco. You only need 6.67mgs of it for each 10mgs you take of the Hydrocodone.
The FDA classifies this medication as a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation.
Is there anything else I can help with?
