Nerontin Side Effects

Updated

I have been prescribed neurontin fo agonising nerve pain, especially in the cervical spine, following an injury to my back a year ago. I was put on 400mgs once a day and have been on them for a week now. I have all the expected side-effects, brain fog (or sludge), nausea, extreme tiredness, insomnia, loss of balance, depresssion and suicidal thoughts, constipation and inability to pee. There's been no effect on the terrible pain yet. Please don't advise me to 'see my doctor': I am stuck in a backwater of southern Europe (Greece) where there is no medical monitoring or help. Neurontin or Lyrica are the only drugs they'll give you for pain. What I want to know is, does it get better? When might it have an effect on the pain and when will the side effects wear off? Will I do permanent damage to my already befuddled brain? I am a 64 year old female and feeling desperate.

Well, to explain, Neurontin contains the active ingredient Gabapentin and it's actually an anticonvulsant, however, it has been proven to help with certain types of nerve pain.

Learn more Gabapentin details here.

In light of that, it will only help if your pain is caused by nerve damage and it's not guaranteed to work for everyone.

On top of that, since it isn't an actual analgesic, the effects aren't going to be felt immediately, it may take 4 to 6 weeks, before you know if it is going to help you.

And no, this medication hasn't been known to cause permanent brain damage according to the currently available information.

Are there any other questions I can help with?

If so, please post back and feel free to ask!

Thank you so much for the above info. Two doctors have said I have pressed nerves and goodness knows what else following a vertebral compression fracture at T12 last year. I must have done something to my neck as well, as 3 or 4 nerves are affected there. Gabapentin or pregabalin are prescribed here for anyone in chronic pain.

I think it's taking the edge off the pain already, but the side effects are very difficult for me (total exhaustion, can't get out of bed, head full of sludge, feeling ill). Should these wear off in time too? Do you know if I should increase the dose at some point?

Thanks again for your help.
