Updated

On Contrave six months and lost 44 lbs. I have also lost a tremendous amount of hair. I am female. Anyone else have this problem?

Hello, Helen! How are you?

The FDA does list that as being a possible side effect of this medication, though it is not considered a common one. Other side effects may include nervousness, dizziness, insomnia, and indigestion.

Is there anything else I can help with?

I have also lost a lot of hair taking contrave. Shocked how much. It is the Wellbutrin component of Contrave that is the cause. The dose of Wellbutrin in contrave is way at the upper limit of dosing for Wellbutrin if you were just taking Wellbutrin alone. I did not come across this side effect much when I read about Contrave prior to taking it but after the hair loss started I took a second look and hair loss is pretty well documented for Wellbutrin. I took myself off the Contrave and now I'm just starting to see regrowth tho I'm still losing hair as well :( Good luck!

Hi Linda, I've been on Contrave nine months and my hair has thinned so much you can see my scalp. I've never had any issues with my hair! I've lost 25 pounds and feel good on the medication, but I'm afraid if I don't stop taking the drug I'll be bald!

Re: Kris (# 3) Expand Referenced Message

I took Contrave for 7 months; I lost a LOT of hair. I stopped taking it during the 7th month. My hair thickened considerably; I took a vitamin for hair and nails. While taking the medicine, I started throwing up intermittently for no apparent reason. Now, after being off the medicine for a year, a U/A showed a moderate amount of blood in my urine. I had a bladder scope and CT scan done which didn't show any problems with my bladder. I'm afraid I might have kidney problems. My advice is DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE.

Congratulations on your weight loss. I was on Contrave for over a year (lost 50 pounds) AND also experienced hair loss. I have now stopped the medication and hope to be able to regrow my hair. Looking back, I haven't decided whether or not it was worth losing hair over :-)

I noticed over the weekend that my hair is coming out in several strands at a time. This is not my normal. Apparently this is a side effect. I stopped today. I was only taking 1 a day but I hope I have stopped in time to not lose too much. Has anyone else experienced this? What happened then?
