Accutane And Infertility (Page 25)
UpdatedI took accutane almost 14 years ago as a teenager. I am now a 32 year old woman who has just been diagnosed with infertility that they believe is linked to autoimmune issues. I truly believe that accutane is the cause of this; from the research that I have done it seems that accutane has been linked to other thyroid-related diseases, but that they have not yet been able to prove a link between accutane and infertility. There are, however, actually more people like me out there than I originally thought. Being diagnosed with ovarian dysfunction has been a horrific, horrific blow. And while there was plenty of information about accutane and birth defects, no one ever mentioned a possibility of future infertility. I was a teenager! This is a tragedy and I believe something should be done about it. If you too have been affected diagnosed with infertility and have taken accutane, please email me. There are plenty of suits against accutance. If there are enough of us, we can come together to do the medical research and get the help we now need.
No, I have never been tested for anti-cardiolipin antibodies. I had ttp when I was 26 which can be a fatal blood virus. It is an autoimmune disease. after that I developed a thyroid problem and hashimotos. I have high blood pressure, sleep apnea, and take 2 different antidepressants. When I went to the fertility doctor, I was over 40 years old and he said that it was too dangerous for me to try anything to get pregnant because I could die. Just recently I wondered if all these health problems occurred because of taking Accutane at 16 years old.
It is 2015 and I am wondering if there is any new information about people that took Accutane when they were in their teens and have been unable to have children in their 30s
Read your info. Did you ever become pregnant? My daughter is going thru what you described
No i never became pregnant at all.
I had my children in my mid 30's
I started getting acne after a course of b12 injections ,started getting bad acne, tried antibiotics ,creams, nothing seems to work ,it's been over a year ,doctors suggest I take accutane ,but I'm scared about their side effects, any suggestions?
Yes my daughter is in the same boat. She took this as s teenager and is now 33 And has done ivf 4 times and the docs can't find a reason why she can not conceive. We signed papers when she was taking this only saying that you could not be trying to get pregnant while taking the drug. We would have never had her in the medication. Let me know if you find anything out. I am sorry that you are going thru this
Infertility is one of the minor side effects that Accutane gave me. My life is over because of this poison. It never should have been prescribed to people for something as miniscule as acne. I was prescribed this poison for maybe 2 or 3 zits. And guess what? I have more zits now, than when I was put on this crap. Thank you derm for lying to me ("I promise all side effects are temporary...they will be over once the drug is out of your system one month after you stop treatment...you are so healthy and young, don't worry so much about the side effects that you are experiencing, you'll be fine") and thank you Roche for manufacturing a drug that slows cell proliferation and interferes with hormones permanently among many, many other things. This drug ages the body inside and outside very quickly. It has affected me physically, mentally, and emotionally. I am not the same happy person that I once was. I cannot do the same things that I did before taking the drug a few years ago. It is just so devastating once you find out what this drug does to the body and brain.
I am 38 and never conceived after drug treatment. I became pregnant during use. And lost it but have never been able too since.
I am so sorry for the loss of your baby, and for your infertility. My son was born with the birth defects. How far along were you when you lost the baby? How long was the baby exposed to the drug? Hugs.
Hello. I also took accutane many years ago and am fighting with infertility, and have very poor cervical mucus. I am in a group devoted to women having issues trying to conceive. Have you had any luck pursuing something against the accutane manufacturer with this? Please
I think there is no scientific research to prove accutane causes infertility... It is only word of mouth....
Erin, have you spoken with other women in your group about past Accutane use?
There is plenty of evidence that Accutane effects reproductive hormones and some evidence that it has a negative effect on measurements of fertility, but there is no solid proof.
It is probably more likely that the hormones cause the acne AND fertility problems, than that isotretinoin affects the hormones.
Acne severity strongly coincides with ovulation for many women. There is no evidence of an association between acne and infertility outside of diseases of androgen excess such as PCOS.
Isotretinoin/Accutane decreases levels of gonadotropins in a similar manner as birth control pills, which are also used as acne treatments.
No PCOS, my hormone levels are normal, my ovulation is right on cue. I have little to no fertile cervical mucus. My OBGYN has mentioned that that has a possibility of being correlated. Same for my diagnosis of severe dry eye as my eyelids do not secrete the oil that keeps your tears from evaporating too quickly (mine evaporate at 2 seconds when it should take 10 seconds).
Consider Behcet's syndrome. You can look it up on the Internet and ask your doctor about it.
There are sebaceous glands of the eyelids called meibomian glands which are responsible for the production of protective tear film. Accutane / 13-cis retinoic acid has been shown to detrimentally alter the structure and function of meibomian glands in several human and animal studies. This leads to dry eyes.
It stands to reason that Accutane effects mucus membrane of the reproductive system as it does other areas of the body.
Sorry, Sjogrens syndrome. Loss of tears and mucus are water related, not lipid related. Eponyms are difficult. So, isotretinoin would not be the culprit.
-Lipids create a hydrophobic barrier which prevents evaporation of water.
Isotretinoin effects the meibomian glands in a way that changes the lipid profile of tear film, causing increased evaporation and Sjorgen's-like dry eye symptoms in men and women. This is well known and well understood:
