2011 30 Mg Oxycodone Shortage (Page 17)

Updated

I am a 51 y/o who lives in Florida, suffering from chronic back pain, and have been prescribed to take up to six 30mg oxycodone tablets a day for over two years by my Pain Management doctor. However, when I went to fill my prescription almost 4 weeks ago, my pharmacy told me their distributor had stopped shipping oxycodone to Florida pharmacies. Since then, I have personally visited about 100 pharmacies but have been unable to find them in stock anywhere. As a former paralegal, I attempted to research the situation, but could only confirm that the DEA has yearly quot on all controlled substances (for oxy's is 98 million grams in 2011). From I gather from the Internet, it appears that the ENTIRE state of FLORIDA is not getting any shipments of oxycodone 30 mg. from distributors, but are other states having this problem as well? Also, can anyone confirm whether (and HOW) the DEA is pressuring distributors to avoid Florida?

This is not uncommon. They had the same problem with truck jacking of Quaalude's back before they made them illegal.

I think you are misinformed. My pharmacist straight out told me that the DEA is restricting the amount of oxycodone methadone and dilaudid to the pharmacies.

Your Pharmacist is misinformed you. The DEA has set the amount to be produced of Schedule II drugs for 2012, long ago, and pertaining just to Oxycodone, it is in the tons. I don't have the actual amount and not going to waste my time looking it up again, it's on the DEA site way back somewhere. It's a little more than 2011. If you live in a State like Florida, they have made some big arrest, and it's as not as freely prescribed, and pharmacist just don't want to deal with it, or won't fill scripts by certain doctors, but that State passed some laws to stop the pill mills and the DEA is very much monitoring scripts filled in certain pharmacies and ones that raise red flags, but there is more allowed for manufacturers to produce than last year, and IF there is a demand for it by scripts, they will keep pumping out the pills til they hit their quota for 2012, which the DEA always underestimates, by a good month or so, but not six months!!

@Keven, good for you, I just recently (about 8 weeks ago) I quit taking my hydromorphone. (Which I had no problem ever filling over the last 2 years) I do have another Schedule II to fill today which last month took me to 7 pharmacy's, all back ordered since only one company makes the generic, where talking 10mg dextro amphetamine sulfate by BARR which is owned by Teva. They ask why,and told me I had to taper off. I threw all 4 scripts in her face, as they just wanted me to come back and back, and they wanted to do a surgery my back and spine that I wasn't ready for. I have done this before with oxycodone back in the 80's. Just cold turkey, for me, it's miserable for a week, maybe 10, with the last couple not bad, and by 14 days I'm ready to get back in shape, do a little jogging( for endorphins and metabolism speed up) to start off, cut down on food get back to right weight and I was good to go after a month or so, it only took 2 weeks plus this time around. I know it's different for all, It was worse with the oxycodone, but I was taking a total of 80mg a day and no tolerance to speak of, started of lower dose, but in just a couple months at 90mg IR over the day. When I got up to that I went to a methadone clinic my sister got me squeezed in with my social worker with only a 2 day wait, walked out after a double dose of methadone (all were jealous), and never looked back, now I was taking 120 4mg Diluadid, had my chose, I went with that, and not eating them because they weren't working well enough, I could of gone to #180, or the 8mg, but saw were I was going. So finally I just quit. I still think of them from time to time, that is why I sure I couldn't get there at least for sometime for the scripts, and a few other things, to make sure I would/couldn't go back. I sometimes think, why did I do that, I still see no reason, easy to fill, my Part D on Medicare is all generics free. There is one thing good about it, and it would have been worse if I just went up in doses and quantities for another couple years. The only please at the moment is telling people I quit taking my pain meds, all of them, I may go back to another some day, but I very much doubt it, as I have told people in person, I tell it here too, it is the pleasure I get from quitting as they weren't a problem other than the tolerance and that when the you start heading into when you constantly, need to up it, at that point I though, upping it again, would be good a couple months, then there would start to be Hell to pay so stopped before the real Hell. Sorry went on and on, just you did the right thing, if you can take it or change meds, I saw the writing on the wall on Oxycontin, I knew they would play with the release formula soon, and they did. OC to OP and have no idea if there is a problem with getting them here, but what I hear the OP's don't work as well when even taken right like you have to now, and these pharmacist that get calls if they have OC's, they tell them how long ago did they quit making those, and you just want to snort them, they are not to be taken that way, one I'm good friends with, we just laughed , yeah right you them over a year ago. I saw a lot of 25 mgs at the office going out with hydromorphone and not. I felt I needed 30-40 really 80's but that wasn't going to happen dropping an 80 OC made no effect on me, I had been taking a lot of them on the side is why. I just wanted to wish you support, don't given in, it will go away quicker than you think, it's the yearning a few weeks later, that why I made it so I couldn't go back, or I probably almost surely would have, cut that cord for good my friend, and just tough it out, it really is not that long in the scheme of things of life.

Thanks for all the best wishes. I will do it as if I keep taking this s*** it will kill me. I have many health problems IE: a bad heart among others. But my biggest insperation is my only Grandson of 15 months. I really want to be around to watch him grow for a while. I'm not sure if the detox did any further damage to my old ticker but been having some pains all day. Taken 3x my BP meds and the Nitro isn't working. Maybe on the way to the ER soon. Waiting to see if a couple Xanax slow it down. THERE IS & WON"T BE ANY RELAPS HERE, Thanks again.

@Kevin and All, I'm glad to see your confidence, with that you will have no problem, I did use tranks at the time and still.
To everyone else, I had a Schedule II filed Friday. Not a pain reliever. As I have said I have a couple of friend Pharmacists, and a very good one, that is the Managing Pharmacist for a long time. You can believe all the rest, but you will look more intelligent believing me, and all I say as truth not I thinks, or I thought, or I heard from a friend a few years ago :). Yes, even Carl did not know this, and I don't know if it's been around forever, but will all to do lately and this, I have come to the conclusion without a doubt, that the DEA has too much influence and power over Schedule II prescriptions. To the point. As I have said the DEA decides how much Schedule II meds can be produced for the year, each med that is. Well. of course I'm right there, some I believe don't. Well also, the devide the amount in Quarters, as in Jan, Feb, and March is one quarter if you run out of the given amount in the first of the month, no more manufacturing until next quarter, as in the start of 2nd quarter, April. Also, the country is divided into 5 regions. So each region is looked at, not the country in a whole, as the regions and quarterly go. Just an example, Lets say the Region with Florida in it, which would be all the bordering states and more, there is an average of 12-14 states in a region. Florida uses more than all it's States in it's Region and if it had used the same as most states in it's region, the region would never run out. But we will say they use so much, that after the 2nd month of 3, as there are 3 months in a quarter. They are cut off, the whole region every 3rd,6th,9th, and 12th month if usuage was the same all year. March,June,September and December, No schedule II's, that means, the manufacturer's, the ones in distribution and on the shelves are ok. I was amazed how hard it was too fill that script last month for the first time, as rather than higher the amount fot the year they cut it just a little. Well, what was last month. June, it was the middle of June, 2 weeks from the end of the quarter, this month, July, the first of the 3rd quarter. I went to all the pharmacy's after filling it at the first, that I am friends with, all of them had them in stock, none had them last month, I mentioned it to one of my friend Pharmacist's, and he told me this, I asked another and agreed with me, why none in June and all had in July and that could well be the reason, I also heard, they are having problems with getting raw material, but that is with many meds the problem, my generic is only had by one company in the USA, Barr a subsidiary of Teva, the largest generic manufacturer in the USA and Canada. Pink and 10mgs any guess, round tab, scored, 10mg on one side of score, manufacturers # on other half nothing on other side. So, with you now knowing this, does it seem more difficult in those months. Also the reason, you hear people say I have no problem half way across the country. So the dozen or so States in Florida's Region, all suffer from the Oxycontin Express, of days gone pass. A Dr. got busted last week were I use to go and just quit in late May. I read, he was out on bond for using his med license to dispense of schedule II meds with no medical reason, and selling them to make a profit ..huh? Well while out on bond, he got busted for the same thing. I mean, come on how stupid, or it has to be greed can you be. Bail was 15k, now it's 65K.... Look up your Region and see what States are in yours, hope it's not, Florida, or California, or are they not a problem state, I know they have all the safety and enforcement rules in place. There are only about 13+ I believe is the number, where you can Dr. shop without the Pharmacy's knowing. Have a good one, more information that you know is true, and not fibber jabber, because, the pharmacist just didn't want to fill your script and gave you some excuse. Carl

i am a 45 yearold male who has multiple herniated disk and nerve damage . ive been on pain medication for 20 years i have always filled my rx with walgreens at the same walgreen for the last year i get multiple medications like we all do one of which is oxycodone 30 ml 145 quanity . i was unable to fill my script last month at all after stopping into 100,s of pharmecy,s and spending 100,s of dollars in gas . i was told everything from they are on back order to you dont qualify to your dr dosnt qualify even though my doctor has never been sued or has never been under investigation in the 25 years he has been in practice . the pharmecy.s always tell me they would be happy to fill the other 5 scripts for me but then i would be walking around with just a script for my 30,s and we all know that would make a tuff situation that much tougher . i went to my dr appt last week after 28 days of being un able to fill my oxycodone and asked him to change my medication and he did to dilaudid 8,s which has been a struggle to fill as well , i was on my way to a mom and pops i was told i could get filled at and on my journey i was driving by a walgreens i have not tried yet so i went in for sh**s and giggles i handed my scripts to the pharmecist on duty and she informed me that walgreens just sent a memo that all walgreens in the state of florida will any longer be carring c2 medications so when i left i decided to give walgreens corperate a call since i have the number in my cell anyways to confirm and she did just that she said until further notice they indeed will not be carrying any c2 medication what so ever . this is ridicolous i have had a othopedic surgeon tell me surgery will cause me more damage in the long run and word for word i was told i would have to be medicated for the remainder of my life i carry my mri with me at all times and im willing to show it to anyone that has any doubt in my medical needs ... atleast the mom and pops helped me out with the dilaudid cost me 500 $ for my scripts but i also have the muscle relaxers and anti inflammitory,s that i also need but have been unable to get until now .

That's a corp decision, not DEA, but Florida is under a microscope, I remember many years ago, a pharmacy in Ca, I'm in AZ now. Had posted , we do not carry Schedule II drugs, with before all this Florida problem, chain pharmacies have a base charge for meds, differences are very small, Pharmacy's just don't want to bother, it's not like they don't make a fortune on it, unless they pick up several Dr. scripts that write a lot of opiates scripts., but they go right under the DEA watch list...don't want to deal with it, I've read of Walgreens being robbed for oxys . Scheduloe II are getting more and more restricted and it gets a pain for Pharmacy's. They want to keep the patients that get that with lets say an antibiotic and whatever. I'm amazed how little problem I have filling 2 Schedule II for years except for one last month but this month all is fine. I was turned down by a chain pharmacy, even when they called the Dr. office, they just said I don't feel comfortable filling this, all legit, but the pharmacist has the last word on filling a script and backed up by law. I wrote this quick and did not proof read, hope it makes since. Carl
