My 6mo old has been getting pneumonia almost since birth. I give him his dose religiously and as soon as the tenth day is up, HE HAS IT AGAIN WITHIN A FEW DAYS. Every time I bring him to the Dr they do X-rays and I'm really tired of doing the same thing over every other week and it's only effective when he's actually taking the meds. My question is if the antibiotic says to discard after ten days and it's three days after the discard date is it still ok to give it to him. I have four children so please don't respond with a common sense answer like dress him better, if I put anymore clothes and hats and gloves and socks he would sweat a twin no lie. I really don't understand why he keeps getting it but he too has chronic asthma, born via c-section, and he sweats w...

What antibiotic has a shelf life of 10 years? ## I don't know of any that have that long of a shelf life and I can't find one listed. It generally varies by drug, so there may be one, however. As to Amoxicillin, it has a shelf life of 2 years, from the date of production and your pharmacist has to give it to you with a minimum of one year left on the expiration date, until it starts to lose potency, except when it is a liquid preparation, which have a 7 to 10 day lifespan. This is an antibiotic, so it may cause side effects, such as: nausea, drowsiness, skin rash and diarrhea. Is it dangerous if you took a pill "Amoxicillin 500MG" after the expiration date? ## The medication Amoxicillin does not get dangerous, after it has expired, but it can lose effectiveness. Thus, it should not be used, because it may not completely clear up an infection and could lead to antibiotic resistance. Are there any other questions or comments?

Hi My daughter has 2 bottle of amoxicillin in the refrigerator. Never used but already mixed. The pink one. The expiration date in the bottle says January 2018. Will it still be good to use? The actual date mixed was July 18 2016 ## In my opinion it should be perfectly fine to take. I say this because I would personally feel comfortable taking it based on the info you provided. Depending on storage conditions many prescriptions can reportedly last up to 40 years after the listed expiration date (with few exceptions such as tetracycline). Harvard University and the LA Times both have articles online recognizing this... But since it's not even January 2018 yet I wouldn't even begin to question its efficacy (especially because it has been refrigerated)... Does anyone else have thou...

Can amoxicillin be taken for a sinus infection? It's 6 months old but it's been in the refrigerator. ## What is the expiration date on this antibiotic? The U.S. FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash, and diarrhea. If it has expired, it may have lost some efficacy, so it would be best to see your doctor for a new supply, if an antibiotic is required.

My child got amoxicillin in the middle of February. It says to throw away March 6 would it be safe to continue using. ## @Daniela, Long term studies from Harvard University as well the LA Times, both determined that many pharmaceutical drugs still remain safe 10-40 years after the listed expiration date. Knowing this, I wouldn't foresee any problems taking something that's only a month past due. I also highly doubt that it would've lost any efficacy in such a short time frame. Further research I've done suggests that many expiration dates are not necessarily "exact", but are rather based upon mere speculation and short term studies. Often times drug companies only evaluate efficacy/safety up to a certain point; and in order to get consumers to continue purchasing...

got aoxacillin 500 mg in japon 2011 Nov will they expire now in 2013 ## Hi Dee - there should be an expiration date on the original prescription container. Antibiotics such as Amoxicillin may last for up to 2 years when properly stored, but I would recommend getting a new prescription filled if you need to take them now. You can read more about this medication on the page for Amoxicillin Details. Do you have any other questions or information to add? Please post back if you do. ## no, but thank you for your fast reply Dee

Hi, I was just wondering if liquid Amoxicillin actually goes bad & could possibly harm someone, or does it just lose its potency? For example, liquid Amoxicillin kept in fridge the whole time, not quite a month old...there's no expiration date anywhere on the bottle, & there was extra left over after it was administered correctly for 10 days. Does it "go bad"/spoil like a food would? Thanks! ## Hello, Ricky! How are you? Yes, it can go sour and, while it wouldn't actually be harmful, it could cause nausea, vomiting and stomach cramps, if taken once expired, as reported by the FDA. Most liquids are only good for a few weeks, but the pharmacy should be able to give a more precise date. Is there anything else I can help with? ## Amoxicillin is actually only good for...

Hello, My 13 yr. Old son has been complaining about sinus pressure, has a runny nose and his ears bother him. I have a bottle of liquid amoxicillin that he's had from a previous ear infection, 2016. It has an expiration of 2019. Is it safe for him? ## If that is the expiration date listed on the label, it should be fine, but it is always best to double check with your doctor or pharmacist, and you should never medicate a child, unless their doctor confirms the presence of some issues requiring a medication. The FDA lists the typical side effects of antibiotics as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, diarrhea, and non-allergic skin rash. How is he doing, now? Has there been any change?

My son who is now one year old had an ear infection in April of this year and he is messing with his ears again. Is it safe for me to give him the amoxicillin I have? It's a full bottle and I never opened it because I had two of them and only needed to use the one bottle. ## Hello, Mary! How are you? What is the expiration date on the bottle? Even though it was refrigerated, liquids tend to degrade faster than solid forms of medications. Thus, if it is past the listed expiration, you should dispose of it and take him to his doctor for a new prescription, if one is needed. The FDA lists the typical side effects of antibiotics as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, drowsiness, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. Is there anything else I can help with? ## I have a sealed b...

how long after exp. date can you use them ## Hi, Lori! How are you? These contain 500mgs of the antibiotic Amoxicillin and you really shouldn't use them, at all, once they are expired. They start to lose potency after the expiration date and that creates the risk of developing antibiotic resistant bacteria. Additionally, that risk is greater if these are leftovers from an old prescription and you don't have enough to complete a full course of treatment. Learn more Amoxicillin details here. It is best to see your doctor for a new prescription. Is there anything else I can help with?

Very large white antibiotic..I am on 875mg ## Basically, amoxicillin mixed with clav-something acid which just enhances the effect of amoxicillan, an antibiotic. Used for chest/skin/ear/throat infections.. ## Was given for severe swollen, kissing tonsils, with an absys on one, closed airway, swollen lymph nodes in neck, and accompanied by four day fever. two days on it and so far, feeling a bit better. ## The other ingredient is Clavulanic Acid, this is a generic for Augmentin. I have some amoxicillin that is 3 months old prescribed to me for my abscessed tooth can I still take it because my abscess is back ## There should be an expiration date on the bottle, once past that date, the best thing to do is dispose of it and obtain a new supply, if needed, from your doctor, or dentist. However, if you did not finish the full course of treatment originally, that may be why the infection has returned. Additionally, if you did not have the original underlying problem corrected, which caused the infection, that could also cause it to return. I'm taking it for a urinary tract infection.. How often should it be taken? And can these cause problems if over the expiration date? (AP13 Ju 10 - Jun 16.) Thank you. ## Hi Kt, In my experience, antibiotic dosing regimens are typically determined by the severity and type of infection you're dealing with; so I would encourage you to discussion this with your doctor or pharmacist before moving forward. However, whenever I've been prescribed ampicillin or amoxicillin (500 mg), it's dosing was recommended to me at intervals of every 8 hours - or three times daily. Concerning the expiration date, I personally wouldn't take expired antibiotics (unless it's only been a few months max), but do know that the dates listed are generally "arbitrary" and do not actua...
