Acyclovir 200 mg. 2x a day. Can the side effect,"change in the amount of urine" in older people, apply to INCREASE in the amount of urine?(male, age 90) undergoing chemo. ## Hello, Ann! How are you? No, that's not a common side effect of Acyclovir, the FDA lists the most common ones as including nausea, dizziness, diarrhea and headache. However, most times, when someone is prescribed this medication, they are told to drink a lot of water, or are given a lot of water by their care givers, which could explain the change in urine volume. In rare cases, this medication has caused kidney crystals, which could lead to kidney failure, so most people are told to take it with lot of water, to help prevent this from occurring. I have acyclovir with a date that is 2 years old. Is it still effective since it has not been opened? It is stored in a dark, dry cabinet. Thanks. ## It does not become dangerous, once expired, but it may have lost some efficacy, thus it would be best to see your doctor for a new prescription, if you need to take it. The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, stomach pain, and flatulence. Are you on any other medications?

Such as a pharmacy name and prescription number? If so, you can go to the pharmacy and ask, though due to privacy issues they may not tell you. What medication can I take with valacyclovir to help with nausea and vomiting? ## Hello, Wendy! How are you? Are you on a short-term dosage to deal with an outbreak, or do you take it regularly as a preventative? For short-term use of higher doses, there likely isn't much that will help, though your doctor may be able to prescribe something for nausea. However, if you're taking it long-term for prevention, then you may do better switching to either Acyclovir or Famcyclovir to see if they cause you less issues. ## Thankyou for your response. I had an outbreak on my mouth a month and a half a go and then 3 more over the next 2 weeks, then a week after that i got them in my nose. An friend gave me a bottle of acyclovir over two years old can it still be used for the same purpose at this time, or has it lost its affectiveness completely. With no symptons at this time I will often use this medicine unexpired of course just for its clealiness qualities in the vaginal area. ## It has probably not lost all of its effectiveness, completely, but if it is in a bottle that has been opened, such as one from a pharmacy and not a factory sealed bottle, then it does start to lose effectiveness, after a year. This is not one of the ones that gets dangerous or toxic, after its expiration, but it will probably not be as effective, as it was, when it was new. The effectiveness duration can also be affected by other factors, such as storage, because heat, moisture and light will ...

I just recently found out I have herpes. My Dr prescribed me Acyclovir for the herpes and 5-325 Hydrocodone-Acetaminophen for the discomfort. Will the hydrocodone really help with the pain? ## Hello, Fml! How are you? Herpes affects the nerve ganglia, wherever your infection is located, either the abdominal area, or your face/head. Thus, while you see the blisters and sores, which can be quite uncomfortable, it can also cause some deeper pain, because of the way its affecting the nerves. Many that experience genital herpes also develop other symptoms, during a breakout, such as aches, pains and fever. That would be my guess as to why your doctor prescribed the Norco, though the best thing to do would be to ask them. The FDA classifies this medication as a narcotic analgesic, so it has t...

I had laser surgery on my face last Friday 6/12/15 I was prescribed to take acyclovir 3 days prior to treatment & then started doxy cycl 100 mg I also take 175 much of synthroid. I started noticing like heart fluttering or palpitations even thought it was heart burn. Went to the clinic mon night & had an EKG & everything checked out. Not sure if I'm having a reaction to the prescriptions. I'm having anxiety could hardly sleep last night. Any suggestions? ## Hello, Nancy! How are you? I'm sorry about the problem you've had. It's difficult to determine which medication may have caused the palpitations, that's a possible side effect of most that are on the market, as listed by the FDA. However, if the EKG didn't show any reason to worry and your doct...

I really need this mouth sore to disappear asap!!! ## Hello, Jill! How are you doing? Both Valacyclovir and Acyclovir are only effective against the herpes simplex virus that causes cold sores and, once you've already gotten a cold sore, that initial dose you took on the first day is enough. Taking more by adding the Acyclovir will not do anything, nor will it help it to heal up any faster.
