Despite what the doctor told you I would not taper both off at the same time. Begin with the gabapentin and slow, slow, slow. There's no rush here and tell your MD this. You've been on it a long time and your body needs a good long time to adjust with the taper. Once off that for a couple weeks and mostly side effect free., then I'd taper the oxycodone. 40mg BID is a substantial dose and I would taper that down just as slow. What's the rush? Tell that to your MD that if he wants you to taper faster. You aren't going anywhere and it makes sense to be comfortable and not in pain or opioid withdrawal agony. It's my opinion, take it for what it's worth.

MG, titrating down is a standard practice after taking pain meds for extended time periods. They are not giving Gabapentin as a alternative.....the person is taking both now....is that correct Kath?

You will be sick if you do not taper down properly and each person is different. Pain management is a great resource for helping folks in your situation..I know, they have helped me in the past.

Titrating? Do you mean withdrawing, or just maintaining on that dosage? I am not sure I understand your question.
If you are planning to use Gabapentin to withdraw from 80mg of Oxy a day, I think you are setting yourself up for a nightmare. There is a high blood pressure medication called Clonedin or Clonodin that will dry up the sweats, the worst part of withdrawal from Oxi.
In 2005, I had to get free of Oxy, prescribed for me by a pain doctor. I was on 80mg a day, and had a terrible reaction to it, had to get free. I had no medical insurance, due to my terminal spine condition, could get zero coverage, so could not afford to go to a rehab place where they make it far easier to detox. I had to do it at home and alone.
I would taper down to 40mg, but when I went lower, I would go into the shakes and sweats. An orthopedic surgeon friend of mine whom I called in desperation had to research it, and called me back. He prescribed the high blood pressure drug Clonotin (I think that is the correct name) for me. I took two the first day, one the second, and one more the third, then it was over. I dropped to 30mg the first day, 20mg the 2nd, 10mg the 3rd, 0mg the 4th, and I was free.
I will never touch morphine again.
Due to my spinal condition, I am provided any drug in the pain category that I need. Controlled substances are given me, and I am very careful to limit what I take. Gabapentin is one of the nerve pain drugs I am given, 600mg 6x a day. For me, it is a helpful drug, but have never heard of it as a drug to help one off a narcotic as powerful as morphine, or Oxy......I would access a professional drug treatment center and ask them. If you can go to one, I urge you to do so. The pain doctor who had prescribed Oxy to me said I was one in 10,000 to do it at home alone; it is miserable to do it as I had to do it.....but, I wanted free of that dreadful drug.
Good luck to you, but be careful.

If you taper off of them, the withdrawal symptoms should be fairly mild, but you may still experience some nausea, dizziness, diarrhea and rebound pain.

With the Gabapentin, the worst thing I had after trying it was a kind of fuzzy headed feeling that lingered for awhile.

Is there anything else I can help with?
