Visceral Hypersensitivity

Updated

I was told I have visceral hypersensitivity without ever having any testing to rule out other possibilities. I suffer from constipation but the stool never reaches my rectum. It stops above the colon. I only have pain when my bowels get full (fecal loading). I don't get sick or anything from eating. I believe there is something wrong with my bowels, but they are not blocked. When I get so full of stool I end up in emergency and they don't offer anything but an x-ray and say yes you are full and send me home. I have pkd stage 4 and my so called specialist has me taking miralax twice daily which gives me diarrhea and drives my blood pressure through the roof. I don't buy into the visceral hypersensitivity. Does anybody have any feedback?

Hello, Brenda! How are you? I'm very sorry about the problems you're having.

Visceral hypersensitivity only means that your viscera is more sensitive to pain, than what's considered normal for the noted stimulus. In and of itself, it is not really a diagnosis. Many people that experience it also suffer from other conditions, such as IBS or chronic constipation.

Rather than the Miralax, you may want to ask your doctor if you're a candidate for trying the new medication that's specifically used to treat chronic constipation. It's called Linzess and has successfully helped many people.

The FDA lists its typical side effects as including nausea, dizziness, bloating and abdominal cramping.

Is there anything else I can help with?

I tried linzess and it immediately threw me into diarrhea. I think miralax is destroying my kidneys. Before starting miralax a little over a year ago my GFR was 29 and my BP was normal. Now my GFR is 20 and my blood pressure still isn't where it needs to be. Now that my GFR has hit 20.I have been placed on the kidney transplant list, but I've been placed on hold because of my BP issues. This is not worth destroy my kidneys. Can a colostomy cure my slow motility issues?

Also, I have reported my concerns to my 2 GI doctors (1 is from U of M) and was told that miralax could possibly be the cause of my high blood pressure.because it is a very rare side effect. Same with nephrologist. The GI doctor actually yelled at me once the phone and told me to just use enemas or suppositories. That doesn't work because my constipation isn't in my rectum. I can't get my doctors to listen to me. Where can I go for help and what can I do if my doctors won't even listen or consider my concerns to be viable. Like I mentioned above, I am fighting with the University of Michigan. Who is left if they won't listen and can't help. I am soooo desperate and afraid I am going to die.

Turns out that I don't have visceral hypersensitivity after all. I knew my problem was not diet related. After a year of arguing with that doctor he ran some tests and found that I actually have a rectocele. I told him I felt like I had a blockage. My regular GI doctor said that is how it would feel. Pelvic floor therapy was recommended but I'm still stuck with the miralax
