Safe Use Of Valium

Updated

Can anyone advise on safe use of valium? I am taking it short term while waiting for my antidepressants to work but have gone through about 18 in 2 or 3 days. When is addiction likely to set in as that's the last thing needed right now having come off alcohol? I know 18 is a lot, but so is anxiety and trouble sleeping. Thanks.

I can only say to stay safe, do so under a known Dr.s orders. (recommended by someone you know) Not 1 found in a directory either. With my PTSD, severe panic attacks, anxiety, endless insomnia a decent Dr. (my shrink of 14yrs) finally after having me do the rounds of SSRIs, then others, even xanax didn't work fully. It did, but never lasted more than a few hours. He had me take 2-3 of 10mg a day Val. Most days i only needed 2. Leaving me usually with about 20 over each month, so if i couldn't make the appt. for 45 days, it was a blessing. But i also was taking 75mg Doxepin & 30mg Restoril at night. I've learned through all my years of suffering, everyone processes differently - so what worked for me may differ. It takes a truly trained psychiatrist a few years to know you well & patience on both sides to be sure it's needed. Here's the bad thing, after 7 yrs of FINALLY the right combo & life seemingly in the right order (the years i could even be around large rooms of strangers not knowing where exits are, not worrying about..enjoying things like the YMCA with my then very young sons)..well i became pregnant for a 3rd late time (no way can you take those preg.! & i was using birth control, yes with husband, father of my sons)..so his receptionist was up in the air, i had weaned myself off for pregnancy-don't understand but something about hormones of motherhood kick in with me to make me face life or rather hide away from bcuz unmedicated -straight..deal with PTSD pregnant...sorry you see

I'm not at all healed because it's been 3 years now since off valium & my old Dr. retired. New Dr.'s (i have tried as many as were allowed) will not prescribe Valium in the state i live in. Nope. ALL & i mean literally all of them give klonopin instead. I try every month. Can only visit 1 Dr. Each 30 days, in the states i don't know whose insurance, or who could afford more than that! The Klonopin just help a little. They don't alleviate all of it. And literally all Dr.s are very strict with just 30 of the 2mg a month & I've been told i only get that higher dose because of my long history. Up all night again. Still take Doxepin, they added Topomax to that. And Ambien. Nope. Still i barely sleep. I think too much of a good thing for too long (the Valium) contributed to this. Or my PTSD has gotten worse? Sorry this is written poorly, long winded, etc. Very tired mom of 3-really want to sleep & this email popped up. Reading it further i saw Valium question. Be careful. It works too well. And most Dr.s are afraid to prescribe it for a reason. This is just 1 person's personal experience & honestly I'd be very happy if i had mine back. I too was once an alcoholic. Never even went to a psychiatrist until i stopped drinking, yet still didn't feel great like they talk about in those meetings.

Followed every step, but knew yeah, the alcohol was my own way of self-medicating, after being sober a year & still feeling like s***. I understand where you're at. I wish I'd maybe forced myself into cognitive therapy when i had the chance. Now too late. I'd never drink again, it REALLY does lead to jails or death. It's the worst poison for me. But is big pharma a bigger poison? 7 days without a klonopin is where this road has lead me, but to panicky by EVERYTHING to ask my Dr. early or for different med, or more, for fear of cut off or hospital. We can't afford that either. I wish you the best & librium is another option to come off alcohol. It didn't agree with me at all, but others swear by it. Look it up. Speak to your Dr. And trusted people about all options. And what meds have or haven't worked in the past. If you can get cognitive therapy along with it, take it while you can!

Re: PanicAttackPTSDInsomnia (# 1) Expand Referenced Message

I started with panic attacks for which Dr prescribed initially I think it was like 5mg and so my friendship with Valium began. It began 40 years ago. I went on to develope Agoraphobia. I eventually ended up at 80 mg a day. Prob was I would develope a tolerance for the amount I was taking so Dr would increase amt he was prescribing. Finally decided after being told there was nothing physical. I tried something I had read about called “Biofeedback “, and gradually I mean gradually tapered off., I tried to get totally off and went into scary withdrawal . Dr finally decided that a maintence dose of 5mg would keep me from going into withdrawal and it has been the answer. Biofeedback and 5mg Of Valium have helped me lead a reasonably normal life. This all started (Valium use) when I was in my early thirties getting more and more Valium as I developed a tolerance and needed more.. with biofeedback ur body learns to automatically kick in when needed and u relax. Please it took me 5 years to find biofeedback and freedom. I still take 5 mg at bedtime as maintence am now a Senior citizen. Now and then when extra tired or stressed life gets a little shaky. But, I’m in charge without a lot of meds cause I found out what were my triggers and found out how to b in charge of my life after losing more years than I can remember. I wish u luck. Hopefully u haven’t been on Valium a long time and can taper off cause it is possible. If not Biofeedback then start ur research and see what’s out there . Good luck and Prayers Up

Thanks to you both. I am going and try avoiding the valium...it just sounds too dangerous. I can't discuss with doctor as I'm getting it on the black market.
