I take glucophage HCL ER 1000 mg a day and my blood sugars are still between 137 and 200 can you help me. Do I need to change the dose or the Medication. Sometime the medication will cause my blood sugar to go to the 20's or 30's requiring me to take a high protien intake right away. I am on an 1800 cal. diet all my life. I have tried different things to help lower my blood sugar but nothing helps. I work 11-7 I am a nurse. At times the glugophage gives me severe diarrhea as well as constant nausea. My Dr. tells me it is my head, that I can't believe since I do my blood sugars 3 times a day 2 hours after meals as per his orders. I have also tried doing them before meals with very little diference in results.
Help Please.

Most people do not get an effective result from Glucophage/Metformin until they take around 1000mgs twice a day.

As to the problems with it, it is obviously not in your head and if your doc is telling you that, it is time to find a new doc!

As a matter of fact, these are listed as side effect in the patient advisory leaflet, that you can see here:

Glucophage Drug Information

• Other, less serious side effects may be more likely to occur. Continue to take metformin and talk to your doctor if you experience
· nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, or diarrhea at the start of therapy;
· abdominal bloating or increased gas production; or
· decreased appetite or changes in taste (metallic taste in your mouth).

I have been taking Met for about 6 years. When I got a new Doc and he upped my dose to 1000 mgs 2x's a day plus gave me Glucotrol XL along with it my sugar levels went from 200-300 a day down to 90-140 max a day. It depends on your system and how it reacts to the Met. Everyone is different! It makes a big difference when you have a Doc who cares and who listens to you. Good Luck!!
