Multiple Refills Deadline

Updated

My pain doctor gives me my precription for Norco for my 1st 30 day supply with 3 refills.I'm haivng my 2nd to the last one filled in the next day or so with one more refill left to e filled end of October/1st of November. I've been told that I won't be able to get that last refill without going BACK to me doctor because of the new law for prescription drugs. I was also told that the pharmacy issupposed to go ahead and fill the rest of my refills now, "Just this one time" in accordance with this new law. Is this TRUE?

You will need to see your dr for Norco after Oct 6, 2014. Some pharmacies aren't doing refills after Oct 3 and other may refuse sooner. There is nothing in the new law regarding the just this one time. And it would be illegal for any pharmacy to give you all of your refills in any situation, but especially with this.

Yes, that is true. They will allow the existing refills to be filled so long as it it done before April 8th, 2015.

Per the DEA:

"Any prescriptions for HCPs that are issued before October 6, 2014, and authorized for refilling, may be dispensed in accordance with 21 CFR 1306.22-1306.23, 1306.25, and 1306.27, if such dispensing occurs before April 8, 2015."

Darwinski , The laws says they "may" refill. It is not mandatory. Although, I'm sure patients who have read the law will believe they can get the refills. The pharmacy has the final say. It will be a difficult position for patients who believe they can get refills and the pharmacy says "no." Especially since this med won't be able to be called in after today (Oct. 5, 2014)

I am in Miami, and would be willing to drive some, but this is getting ridiculous. My boyfriend is prescribed 120 hydrocodone (10/325) every single month for major back issues. He goes to the dr every month, he gets his script and we always fill it at the same walgreens. He went on Monday, and since then we have not been able to find one pharmacy, ANYWHERE, since or due to this law change, that has that amount in stock. I have tried everywhere, driven for hours, been lied to on the phone by pharmacies, and looked everywhere. He runs out tonight and I have studied addiction and i know he is going to get very sick likely starting tomorrow, if he can even sleep tonight, if we don't get this filled. I have even tried to fill it at major hospitals, tried CVS, Walgreens, mom and pop places, grocery stores, EVERYWHERE and nothing. Any suggestions, i understand the importance of regulation very well but this is a legitimate script for legitimate proven pain via MRI and i cant believe i might have to spend another whole night now after work to keep looking. Please help, any ideas? Any pharmacies in the Miami-Dade county area that you can reccomend?

Jerilynn:

It sounds like your boyfriend sees a pain management specialist to obtain his pain medicine script? Typically, the doctor is very understanding of supply issues and would be willing to work with you. Would you be able to call them and tell them the situation? If so, they may be willing to write out several scripts in smaller amounts that equal 120. For instance: 30ct, 30ct and 60ct . . . or similar. Alternately, you may ask them to temporarily try other hydrocodone containing medications... Even Zohydro, which is hydrocodone without the acetaminophen. If you check their website, there is a coupon which would allow you to pay $25 for your prescription.

It is no surprise that pharmacies are having stock issues due to the Gov's reclassification of hydrocodone containing medications which took effect several days ago.

I wish you luck.

And they SHOULD be able to get the refills assuming they had a prescription issued prior to Oct 6th.

This new law as well as all the cracking down thats being done by the government,in my opinion Is LUDICROUS!!Instead of protecting people from overdoses and drug crime, I don't see the logic in there methods! When people are in such BAD PAIN, this will drive more and more people to seek-out and do anything!!! TO STOP THE PAIN--- Explain to me how this benefits the patients?? Once again Government and BIG PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANIES are the ones prospering--while more and more citizens are suffering and lying in hospitals suffering before they die! Suicides will increase due to illness' and the hopelessness that will follow~~~GOD HELP US ALL~~~

We're having Norco 7.5/325 shortages in Las Vegas too. The CVS i go too has been out since 10/7/2014. If you call around they all give you the same answer. NO STOCK.

Pharmacy's in MO have just said no refills will be filled after Oct 6th and require a new script. I haven't heard of shortages around KC Metro area "yet" knock on wood. I'm just thankful my Dr just requires a call in for my refill then I just have to go to his office to pick up my script. It sounds like all hell is breaking loose! :/
