my 6 year old daughter just got diiagnosed with adhd and her doctor subscribed her folicanxr and im really scared to give her the medicine because of all the things i hear about the medicine i want her to focus better at school and listen to her teacher and do well but i dont wanna risk all the things i heard just so she does well what should i do i need help? im soo worried please someone give me some advise.

I would like to preface this comment by saying that I do not claim to be an expert. However, I am very familiar with ADD and ADHD. My two brothers started medication at about your daughters age and I have numerous friends who still in college need to be medicated to have any sense of personal responsibility. Everyone I know that is medicated now or in the past completely resents the entire process. ALL of the examples that I know (about 15) agree that it leads to complete and utter dependence that may or may not be reversible. This is something that you may be inadvertently subjecting your child to in the future.

Also, think about this for a moment. What is most important for a 6 year old to learn in school? Times tables? Reading chapter books? Or perhaps it is proper social adjustment that can only be attained through extensive interaction with other children! PLAYGROUND POLITICS! I am a firm believer that kids learn everything they need to know in order to succeed outside the classroom in those critical years between about 5-12. You must learn about friendship, loyalty, intimacy, gender roles, and most importantly overcoming adversity on a small scale before you can naturally handle problems of consequence in those hard teen years and even adulthood. This type of personality altering medication may not make it impossible for your daughter to become a perfectly well-adjusted, confident and compassionate adult. However, I guarantee it will hinder her ability to learn all of the indispensable lessons learned on the playground.

I can see so many holes in the people I know that have been medicated throughout childhood. There is something that just isn't there that you can't put your finger on. Catching on to social cues is not something that a child is naturally endowed with, but rather an acquired skill.

Happiness should be your #1 priority. You can give your daughter a childhood that she will look back on with nothing but fond memories if you and your husband remember patience, praise and affection. Remember that disciplining is often forgotten the next day but giving your child confidence through kind words of validation can last forever.

I'm taking 40mg now & am still waiting for side-effects, haha...the only difference my family has noticed is I talk a little bit more, but it doesn't bother them bcause they see the huge positive improvements I've made by taking Focalin...before that I used to take Ritalin. Some therapists feel Focalin is better.
