Hydrocodone/acetaminophen Extended Use

91 year old man, after having shingles , has been on drug for over 2 years. Before an upcoming nerve block the doctor put him on levorthanol instead of hydrocodone for 3 months. After the nerve block the doctor took him off of both drugs. He has been suffering the withdrawal symphtoms. He is most distrubed about not being able to sleep. What is proper treatment at this time?

I am a 100% service connected disabled veteran of the Korean war. I have been on Hydrocodone 5 /acetaminophen for years. It is no longer effective, I have been in AA for 40 plus years, no slips. I took oxycoten (?) once and it made me high, I quit it. I am having another operation soon and wonder what others have done in similar situation. I have a constant pain between 6 and 9. Thank you

I am not a Dr. but it seems to me if you are 91 years old that you might want to continue with the Hydrocodon or perhaps something stronger like Morphine. To be in constant pain is just awful and makes the life you have left sort of a half life. Maybe you could get your Dr. to change your meds to Percocet or Percodan until you have the surgery. Hopefully you can get yourself out of pain soon. At this point I really would not worry about addiction!

His doctor took hims off of hydrocodone without tapering him? That’s damn near malpractice if he did. At 91, I think withdrawal without any support is dangerous for him. And shingles is acutely painful. Does the doctor at least have him on topical meds?
