Hi, need advice. I've seen my pm dr for over five years, never dr shopped, passed all u/a's, had two major surgeries a week apart, had pt, made a horrible horrible mistake, had accidental od, required hospitalization. I own my mistake. My pm dropped me. I was on a large dose of morphine, changed from oxycontin and took oxy 20mgs for break thru. After od'ing twice, yes twice, i took myself off. It was hard but so is life. Chronic pain still exists. I feel like scarlet letter on my back. I have no desire to be placed on morphine again. Have spinal issues as well. Any suggestion is appreciated. Do I need to see a rheumatologist? Please be truthful. I just don't believe i can get any help. I live in Indianapolis

My husband filled scripts from two different docs. I know ur situation is different but he was blacklisted amongst doctors for 5 years. I don't know how long they ban u for an attempted od. Maybe get some phchiatric help and prove u are getting better.... just a thought. Or just ask them what u have to do.

Sally , what did the dr say ? A lot of pain drs won't prescribe anxiety meds because mental health is not their specialty. Do you have a copy of your medical records from your previous dr ? Any new dr will need medical proof that you have a medical problem that may cause pain severe enough to require opiates. Each dr has their own way of doing things. You can't go in and ask for a specific med. Most drs will start you out on the mildest at the lowest dose and go from their. If you are taking a high dose of meds, it is doubtful that you will find a dr that will continue to prescribe that high dose to you. If you broke the rules in a pain contract, it is also doubtful that you will be able to find a dr that will manage your pain.

Prescription monitoring programs usually keep the list of meds you have been prescribed for 2-3 years
It is very easy to OD on opiates. Just having a glass of wine can do it if you don't drink much or are prescribed other mood altering meds like Valium.

Many States have changed the precribing practices...say your PCP isn't supposed to write chronic pain meds in Tennessee anymore, your supposed to find a Pain Physician Group to address your pain issues. I've personally known SEVERAL area Drs. That have gotten in legal hot water for their own prescribing practices...this may be similar situations your M.D.s dealing with now.

Hi, Yes signing a narcotic contract is legal and anyone who is given any type of pain medicine and or any type of narcotics do have to sign one. It basically says that the doctor you are going to is prescribing pain medicine to you and that you are not allowed to get any prescriptions for narcotics from any other doctor.

I know this has been in practice since 2001, because I had to sign one when I started seeing Dr. Miller after my accident...after I got out of the hospital..

Jenifer, I'll second your info re;the state pharmacy board's drug monitoring data base. In Ohio for example, the Pharmacy Board headquarters is located in Columbus. In 2013 the database was set up with records going back 2 years. I think I paid $25 or $30 to get a copy of mine. At the time I just wanted to make sure no mistakes were made plus was just very curious to see what it looked like. I could've filled out a form, had it notarized and mailed the request in as well. I don't know if it's still set up that way.

I understand the type of clinic you're referring to at one point I was with a group of doctors like that and they literally did six epidural injections on me and it was like they were holding pain meds hostage and less I continuously made them huge money by being knocked out every six weeks to get inject That only made me worse and were dangerous every time you may not be able to find a regular pain doctor if you've not had injections and such but I'm now with the physician that knows I tried everything and surgical procedures and he knows I'm at a stable point and just need pain control I've been with them about seven years and he's in his 60s and I worry constantly that something might change like he might retire so good luck to you and be clear you have your surgical records and your prescription records and explain to the doctors why you can't have additional trigger points etc. my recommendation is simply not to look at pain doctors that have an associated Surgi center located in their building because that's where they make their money and if you complain about an increase in pain with these people they put you back into epidurals rather than increasing your medication I would avoid those moneymaking Mills at any cost good luck in your search !

I'm surprised they didn't make you sign one when you first started. They were probably looking through their records and just saw you didn't have one. Just go sign it. That's all they want..
ALL pain management Drs. Are supposed to get those client contracts signed..

Yes, my PM doctor has been requiring that we sign a yearly narcotic contract since 2010, and has been performing UA's since the mddle of that same year. Our UA's used to be done like clockwork every 3 months, starting in May of 2016 to the present it is done every visit.

Hi there
Were you able to find someone to help you out?

That is bs. they are getting tighter about prescribing narcs because of the DEA intervention an docs don't want to loose their license. Or he might think you are getting addicted. Or someone might have dropped a dime on you thinking you are faking. did you find out why? Just look around it might take time and $.Do this and I'm sure you will find on if you have a legitimate problem. good luck.

Your doctor should be able to give you a referral to a pain clinic.
