Does Morphine Make U Sleepy
(Newest replies first)

Updated

I am currently on morphine (one every 4-6 hours) for severe stomach pains until i can make an appointment for a scan. I get tired a lot, often makes me groggy and quite weak. Other symptoms i get with morphine are headaches and nausea. The tired part is normal due to the medication being very strong.

Hello Khloe, Narcotic medications have numerous different effects on people and they also vary how they affect those that take them. It sounds like you haven't taken those types of medications before, or at least not much at all. First off please make sure you're not doing anything that requires you to focus and be fully coherent, (like Driving, Operating machinery, these types of things, etc.) Narcotic medications are very powerful and can severely affect your reaction time, balance, stability, ability to focus and/or concentrate and many other nervous system and physical affects. They can also act very strange and be confusing, for eg, one minute you're feeling ok, normal and think you're all good to go and the next you could be all dizzy, weak in the knees, your eyes cant focus, you could get really tired very quickly, you could start sweating, you could get super sleepy, and a variety of other affects that literally come on in an instant, many times without any warning at all. But again, everyone is different and how they affect you personally is unique to you. Many narcotic medications make people sleepy, some much more then others, Morphine is one that makes most people sleepy, to what level varies from person to person. Morphine also slows your heartbeat down so please also make sure you're not taking anything else that has the same effect. Alcohol and Marijuana are the most common that Morphine users should Never mix with Narcotics like Morphine, but other things like Cold Syrup (Nyquil etc), or other cold medications that have certain ingredients that make people sleepy, should also Never be taken while also taking Morphine or other narcotics medications. Also given that you're taking Morphine for stomach pain, did your doctor ask you to eat something before taking the morphine?? Narcotic medications taken orally (mouth), can bother people's stomachs and can cause certain users stomach pain, so if your doctor didn't mention that and/or its not written on your prescription bottle, call/go see your doctor and ask him/her about taking food with the morphine, or if that's not easy to do then call a pharmacist at any drug store and ask them about eating food before taking the morphine. You can also drink a glass of milk before taking it also to coat your stomach, unless you have issues with dairy products of course. Lastly, do yourself a big favor and only take the morphine as directed and only for as long as you have to, then be done with it. To many people continue taking narcotics after their original reason for taking them is done, they get hooked and then they're in a major world of hurt that's very hard to get away from. Narcotics are very very helpful and dull our pain very well but they also can be extremely addicting and can cause the user severe problems if they continue to take them for other reasons except the original one which was legit pain. Just some advice, not a lecture, but please take my warning to heart and please take my advice...... And I hope whatever is causing you stomach pain is remedied very fast and you're pain free asap. If there's anything else I can help you with, or if you have any questions at all, please feel free to send me a message, im happy to help in any way I can. Take care.

Hello, Khloe! How are you?

Yes, those can all be normal side effects of Morphine, as reported by the FDA. You may also experience dizziness, headache and constipation.

Is there anything else I can help with?
