Trying To Figure Out My Son's Methadone Drug Tests And Other Issues
UpdatedOur son has been an addict on oxycontin, hydrocodone, and alprazolam for 15 years. He entered the Methadone Clinic here about 9 months ago. We saw marvelous results. All the stealing, dealing, and horrible behavior STOPPED! We were not happy to see him bounce from Suboxone to the Methadone, but after seeing these positive effects, we finally could sleep at night and have peace of mind. HOWEVER, in recent weeks, he is beginning to show some strange behaviors. He stays agitated, gets angry, will not have a conversation with us, is 'wild' some days and then sleeps for 2 days straight! He is rapidly losing weight. I found him in the garage late last night, slumped over his steering wheel of his truck, and when I attempted to wake him up, he was drowning in sweat and could not talk. His eyes were... I don't know how to describe it. They didn't work right! He did not know who I was. I got his mother to come out and help me get him out of the truck. He asked her who she was. We walked him into the house and put him to bed and watched over him all night long. The next morning, he awakened at 8 a.m. and was the most normal human being you could imagine! We are fearful he has learned a way to beat the urine tests at the clinic. Can anyone give me an idea of WHAT he might be taking besides the Methadone? I'm convinced he is taking some kind of pills and whatever they are, they are going to kill him. ANYTHING anyone can offer on this would be greatly appreciated!!! What in the world CAN he be taking that is causing this behavior, yet they don't see it in his urine?!

Oh Gosh Mike I can feel your concern through your writing. It sounds like a stimulant and there are many rather easy ways to outsmart simple urine lab tests. I suggest you or a therapist sit him down and tell him your concern based on his aberrant (strange or unusual or drugged change in behavior) has caused people to think he's useing again. A urine test is confirmation but we don't have anything that is error free. I'm not a drug counselor but try to locate one with experience with this. I'm sure you aren't the only case they've seen with urine test negative but behavior changed back to pre sobriety days.
But also be aware there has been a lot of discussion about methadone and other outsourced manufactured meds from India and other countries having contaminants. Let the counselors know about this. It's a real problem the FDA has been notified about. Ask your son if a new methadone prescription was making him feel odd or unusual. Is he in withdrawal too? That is a key thing that will tell investigators that the med he needs is being substituted with something else.
I'm sorry for your pain. I hope things go well for you and family.
