Stress And Its Effect On Diabetes
UpdatedAccording to the America Diabetes Association, there is an explicit correlation between the effects of mental stress on blood glucose levels in those with type 2 diabetes. However, physical stress, illness or trauma has also been shown to raise glucose levels in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
You can find out how much various stressors affect your blood glucose levels by simply jotting down how stressed you are on a scale of 1-10 and writing your glucose level next to it; then do the same thing when you are in a relaxed state (maybe repeat after a week or longer to investigate possible patterns). Doing this exercise could help you become more aware of how certain emotions, coping styles, and your problem-solving attitude impact various aspects of your health. Perhaps finding better ways to control one's emotional response to otherwise stressful stimuli is a key component to maintaining normal glucose levels, whether you have blood sugar problems or not.
