It is normal for there to be some elevation after meals, but there are also some other relevant things that should be taken under consideration.

The first is, you said you are taking them after you meal, this means that if you are checking your blood sugar level right after you finish eating, the medication hasn't even had a chance to start working, yet. It will take them 15 to 20 minutes to start working in your body and, at that point, the full effects of your food haven't even hit your body, yet.

Ideally, these medications should be taken just before a meal, that way they have to chance to start working, while you are eating and they can be much more effective that way.

The next issue has to do with what you are eating. Are you sticking with low sugar and low fat foods? You can't just eat whatever you want and expect these medications to do everything for you, you do have to control you diet and help them do their jobs.

Fats tend to coat the cells in your body and this doesn't allow the sugars from your meal to enter them, as it should, and be burned for energy. So, it has no choice but to stay in your blood stream, circulating around and elevating your sugar level. If you eat a meal that is heavy in both fats and sugars, then you are really making it hard for your body to properly process the sugars and the medications are not going to work as well as they should.

Normal blood sugar levels are considered to range from 80 to 120, so even after a meal, 160 is high.

You should contact your doctor, they will have more information to help you with your diet and medication usage, so that you can get the maximum benefit and get your blood sugar under control.

Have you consulted your doctor, yet?
