Miralax Powder With Strange Odor

Updated

I've been taking MiraLAX for over five years now on a regular basis and I've had no problems. My problem now is the last two bottles that I bought had a chemical odor smelled like kerosene. The bottles were fresh I did buy them at Sam's Club but cannot understand why these two bottles had a strange smell even after it was mixed up. I usually drink mine in coffee and there's never been an odor like this before. Has anyone else experienced this? I've had five abdominal surgeries and this is the only thing that helps me but now I'm afraid to buy anymore. Please help me if you can.

Today our family noticed a similar odor after mixing less than a tablespoon of MiraLax in a glass of water. My daughter who was going to drink it said it smelled and tasted funny. My wife and I agreed. I half wondered if the odor was coming from the plastic Britta container or filter but i mixed some separately in a glass and tap water and still noticed the same issue. I'm not sure I would describe the smell as a kerosene, but rather plastic-like Styrofoam chemical odor.

That does sound really strange, like perhaps it's some sort of quality control issue... Did either of you contact the manufacturer or check to see if maybe they changed out certain inactive ingredients in these newer batches? I would be very hesitant to try it, let alone buy anymore after a disturbing experience like this. I'd also question if the packaging material is any different than previous bottles?

All investigating aside, does it still work as well?

I just found this thread because I have also noticed a changed smell in Miralax (and also generic PEG) after using it for a long time. I'd describe it as a chemical smell, quite strong. Some one line compare it with Elmer's glue, which is close. Would be good to get to bottom of this (no pun intended).

I’m having the same issue but it tasted funny as well. I called the company and it’s not supposed to. I went and bought a second bottle a few days ago and same thing. I just returned it

It’s another year and a half since your post and I just bought a bottle that has the bad smell and taste. It’s never happened before. I can’t believe they haven’t fixed this issue!

I also have a 26.9 OZ bottle that smells and tastes like plastic. I bought it from Amazon. I’m hoping I can return it. I will be sending an email to MiraLax.

I use Miralax daily, in warm tea, or to limit my caffeine, I will use 2 teaspoons of jello mix in my hot water. Love the jolly rancher watermelon best!!! Well, my new bottle of Miralax made it taste like rotten meat, and the bottle smells like Elmer's glue. Yuck!!! I will not drink this!!!

Re: Harry (# 3) Expand Referenced Message

Hi , I found your story and it concerned me because I to have to take Miralax regularly. I instead use the Walmart brand and haven't had any such problem that you have. Maybe switch to it and see if that helps.. I hope you're doing well! Be Safe!

I just bought a MiraLax 8.3oz bottle and experienced the same odor. Odd because I've taken off brands also in and no issues. I contacted the manufacturer and got refunded.

I have also noticed a very strange odor and burning with the last two containers of MiraLax. I actually threw the first one out! What is going on?

I got a off brand of Miralax from my pharmacy cause they couldn't find anything else. It's smells and taste awful. Kinda what this 5 year thread as compared it to. Ugh.

I bought a Miralax bottle from Walgreens and experienced the same issue. Very strong chemical odor and whatnot. I stopped continuing immediately and contacted costumer service. They issued me a refund and only taking off brand now which haven't had any issues.

I am so relieved to see this thread as I also bought a bottle and noticed the glue/plastic smell, which has never occurred before. I exchanged for another bottle and same thing. I exchanged that one today at sane store different town - same thing. Will return for good at this point. I thought perhaps it was a bad batch as all three have sane numbers and expiration dates but I’m tired of this now. Will try an off brand

Same!! I bought 2 bottles at the middle and end of January and they smell and taste terrible but I think it’s also giving me heartburn!

Glad it’s not just me. Thought I was losing it.

I too purchased MiraLax from Costco and this last batch smells like Elmer's glue. I've never had this issue as I've been taking it daily for a couple of years. I'm going to post my concerns on their social media page as well.

I have a cat who has to have Miralax sprinkled on his food or he gets constipated. We are having a problem because he just basically refuses it. To me it smells like vinegar. Now he is constipated and not only is that hard on him it's expensive.

I, too, give my cat a tsp of miralax. Had purchased a small bottle and he seemed okay with it ~ did not seem to notice it in his food ~ Yay!
About 1/2 way down in the bottle now and he now seems to not want to eat it if I have added his Miralax !?

Re: Duce (# 20) Expand Referenced Message

Today, I opened one of two new bottles of Miralax purchased from Target. It smelled and tasted disgusting and left me in fear of having been poisoned. I have been taking Miralax, EquateLax and Kirkland brand for years and have never once experienced this before. I used bottled water, so I know the problem is Miralax. After reading this forum, It is mind boggling that this problem has gone on for years, and Miralax keeps making the same manufacturing mistakes over and over again. I'm sticking with EquateLax from now on.

i started taking miralax daily about a month ago and i noticed this smell develops as the powder is exposed to air. i still use it and it still works even though it has a funky smell. i think for people saying it tastes funny, what you’re smelling while your drinking it will affect how it tastes, so maybe try holding your nose. also, i did notice that the smell was worse in the non name brands.

Same. All recent. The manufacturer (Bayer) quietly refunds each individual with the exact same problem? Something is rotten.

Re: Duce (# 20) Expand Referenced Message

We just had a vet day for enemas. He's not feeling well and will not eat his food with the Miralax. I ordered a generic from Amazon. It's the same. When he won't eat it I have to give him lactulose which is difficult because he is resistant. I had been giving him Miralax for about 7 years.
