Midrin Where Can I Get It (Top voted first)

Updated

I have been taking Midrin for the past 10 years for migraines because I don't get any side effects from it and it works really well. Now all of a sudden the pharmacies in my area (3 of them) are saying that they can't get any or it is on backorders for the past 3 months. Do they still make it? I tried a different medication and it makes me really dissy so I really need to know how to get the Midrin. How can I get a presecription filled and where even in the mail would be ok.

I just had a RX filled for "generic for Midrin", manufactured by Method Pharmaceuticals. I compared the ingredients to my old bottle of Midrin, and they are exactly the same. It was covered by insurance (100 pills $10 copay). It was brought in for me by my local Costco.

hi l've also been an addict for over 10+ years (formidrin, isometheptene mucate, dichloralphenazone andacetaminophen) I say quality over quantity, Macoven Pharmaceuticals does make this med currently, info for your pharmacist:

my problem is also the price now, used to be $5/60 pills with ins. my insurance now does not cover this drug. they say it is now a DESI drug, classified by the FDA. which means the drug has not been proven to be effective even though they been prescribing it for 60+ years. I too now have to pay $3.50/pill @ walgreens. (with a discount card it saved me $60) this was the cheapest place I could find it. good luck all. ironically it is the most effective headache medicine for me and for many others from what i read.

A new formulation of isometheptene mucate (active ingredient in Midrin) is being currently in phase 2 testing by Tonix pharmaceuticals for episodic tension-type headaches (migraine testing later). By removing most of the S-isomer, which has a blood pressure raising side-effect, and leaving the R-isomer, which is effective on headaches, the dosage can be safely raised. Hopefully the new drug, dubbed TNX-201 for now, with 7.5x more isometheptene mucate than Midrin, will be approved and become available in 2017. The phase 2 results are due late 2015.

Anyone who needs midrin will be pleased when this becomes available. (It won't be generic, but...)

I just had my prescription filled for Midrin (generic) at Walmart. Previously I had to go to a compounding pharmacy. My doctor called in the refill at the compounding pharmacy and they called me and told me they would forward it to Walmart because they didn't compound it anymore. My insurance did not pay, $45 for 20 capsules, but I am just glad I can get it easily again.

Macoven Pharma still makes Midrin. My Walgreens did not know about it, but will order it from me. Tell them and they will get it for you! I only found out because Kroger had it.

I used Midrin successfully from about 1992 to 2009 when it was no longer available in my local pharmacy. I was told that it was permanently off the market, and I was devastated as none of the preventatives have worked. My doctor Rxed me Prodrin and while this has been somewhat helpful to lower the pain from about 8 to a 4 on the pain scale, the caffeine in it always caused me sleep disturbance. For years I have just tolerated this once a month (headaches are hormonally related) and essentially knew that I would have to trade off sleep for the benefit of at least dulling down the pain some. The problem is that as I get older (I am 43), the headaches are lasting longer. Today marks the 4th day in a row that this vice-grip has persisted on my skull. I took the Prodrin for the first few days but as the headache kept coming back every morning, the lack of sleep has caught up with me and made life practically intolerable. I can no longer choose between only getting 3 hours of sleep or having a bad headache. I got back on the web and searched information about Midrin again, and lo and behold, I discovered that Mocoven is manufacturing a generic again!!! And sure enough, when I called my local Walgreens, the pharmacist said she has been filling Rx'es for this for the last year or more. I was flabbergasted that I didn't know this all this time!!! But I was happy to know I would soon be able to treat this horeendous headache with the meds that I know work for me and don't cause the intolerable insomnia problem. It took 3 days to finally have my doctor be willing to change my Rx from prodrin back to Isometh/Dichor/Apap, but I took my first dose about 20 minutes ago and I feel the pain finally starting to recede. Praise GOD!!!! So you absolutely CAN get this medication and I highly encourage you to fight for it long and hard until you have it in your hand again.

I refilled my Rx for the generic medication that is the same combination of medications as Midrin just a week ago. It is generic. I am not sure why you can't get the generic anymore but maybe you need to have your pharmacy call the manufacturer. See my previous post for more information on the manufacturer. I am SO GLAD it is available again!!!

I just checked at CVS and they said it was on backorder until July., My son has intractable migraine. I used to have migraines, too, but at that time I only paid $20 for 100 capsules. I don't understand how it got so out of control.

Re: Kat (# 122) Expand Referenced Message

Midrin is my go to and I cannot get it filled anywhere. CVS told me they will no longer carry it. When I spoke with my doctor she said since it was not FDA approved and the FDA is cracking down on medications that Midrin will no longer be manufactured. I have no idea what to do. They listed several reasons for removing it from market like it contains red dye and causes nausea. All of which I think it ridiculous. I hope they get FDA approval and come back to market with it.

Still cannot get it anywhere including Canada. I just had my Dr call in a compound prescription to our local compounding pharmacy. They use something different than the Dichloralphenazone (which they cannot buy but the replacement does the same thing according to the pharmacist). I have had them compound it for me before when the FDA first caused a cancellation and it worked the same for me.

I was able to buy the last six in my town, but the pharmacists said there is no way for them to get any more. My suggestion would be to try shopping around at small-town pharmacies that may still have a few... then horde them! They are more precious than gold to most of us. Best of luck and I hope you find something that works for you.

06/23/11- You can still get Midrin at compounding pharmacies! I just got some today. They simply order the three ingrediants that are in midrin, compound them, put them in the capsule. My price was $55 for 60 caps or $45. for 30. Just google compounding pharmacies in your area.
