Metoprolol Tart 25mg - Mylan
(Newest replies first)

Updated

I took Metoprolol Tart for 2 months, June - July 09 and my heart rate dropped drastically, admitted to hospital with chest pains, breathing difficulty, dizziness, disoriented, head ache, suicidal/homicidal thoughts, heart rate was 32 bpm. Doctor said it was metoprolol and took me off it (was told later should never go off cold turkey) and my heart rate got up above 50. I continued to have problems (have had high bp 140-160 over 80 for several years) tightness in chest, chest pains, persistant dry cough, dizziness, suicidal/homicidal thoughts, headaches, was referred to a pulmonary doctor and then another and was told I developed severe asthma from the beta blocker, also restrictive lung disease, neither have a cure and I continue to have chest pain and dizziness and dry cough and headaches, feeling out of breath. When I took the pills they were pink and now they are white from what the pharmacist told me the pills I was taking were voluntarily recalled and (that means they don't report to the FDA) then changed to the new white pills. I have been hospitalized again for chest pain and my heart checked out throughly and seems no heart problems but all lung problem. I still have high blood pressure but now only take lasic and potassium. I now have to take daily inhalers/breathing treatments. I use to enjoy hiking, fossil hunting, rock hounding, tennis, jogging and am now only able to walk about 500 feet without being out of breath. I also get horrible pains in my upper thighs and feel fatigued all the time. This sucks and the drug companies just consider us collateral damage.. They don't want to compensate for medical or pain or suffering. Attorneys won't take the claim for one reason or the other, it just makes me angry. I don't know if I'll ever be more well or if I will be dead in the next couple of years but I'm not going to give up without a fight. This drug does more harm than good and needs to be taken off the market!

I've cut my dosage of Metoprolol by 50%; I take half a pill in the AM and half in the PM - no more dizziness or vomiting. Am working on a diet to keep my BP/pulse in the 120/80/60 range - will speak with my MD about cutting the Lisinopril (20/12.5) to one daily...

I've been on Metoprolol Tartrate 100 mg 2X/day and Lisinopril-hct 10 mg 2X/day for close to four years to keep my BP down - yes it does that HOWEVER, I've been feeling weak and tired for a long time (cannot drive more than 3-hrs without a 15-20 min nap. Recently, very dizzy, and vomiting - had to go to the Doctor who sent me to the ER for an MRI etc. After a whole bunch of question relating to heart issues and possible stroke, it was concluded (by myself and hospital physicians) to cut the metoprolol by 50% - half a 100 mg in the AM and have in the PM. So far, so good, BP in the 115/75 range and pulse in the 55-60 range - not as tired - physically but psychologically expecting it.

And don't forget that 25mg QD is considered a LOW dose of metoprolol. That's not fair — look at the way it effected you (based on your report of your Ddx, Tx and Rxs, it only could have been the beta-blocker).

Uh, the doc directed abrupt discontinuance and that should be on his chart. Obviously you're an attorney because your write several meaningless p[aragraphs too get to the point. If your FACT PATTERN is wrong, your whole argument is crumbling. Glad my sister's a better reader and writer than you are. (But Yale does that to law students, I understand, except for those it makes into monsters of verbosity) Yes, I am an Expert Witness recognize as such by local, state and Federal Courts. If it became necessary, I could testifies before The Supremes themselves. One of my specialties is Forensic Psychiatry

I feel you! I am experiencing the same signs and symptoms and sideeffects. My Doctors tells me it's all in my head and took my off the med cold turkey and replaced it with Ranexa and Imdur, well Lo and behold, I was found unresponsive on my hospital bed. I had some type of stroke on the left side that paralyzed my right side and speechless!!! And no one knows or cares what happened to me.
What Can We Do???

Has anyone taken this medication while pregnant? My doctor put me on it because I had tachycardia and low blood pressure. I was actually passing out and feeling really terrible. I fought her on it because it is a class C medication during pregnamcy, but she said it would be more dangerous not to take it. I read that one of the side effects was heart defects in babies. When my son was born he went into congestive heart failure due to 3 heart defects that we did not know he had. He had open heart surgery at two weeks old and still has a heart defect that they were not able to repair due to the risky location. I'm not looking to file a legal suit, just wondering if anyone else has had this experience? I would just like more insight, I would like to have another baby some day and am wondering if I will go through the same thing, or if my son's issues could possibly be related to this medication.

My mother was suffering all sorts of problems: from dizziness, inability to sleep, chest pains, itching, etc. etc. check with Wikipedia to see the full list... Then her problems caused her to suffer psychosis from lack of sleep, it was pure hell, and nothing the doctors tried would give her relief. I did my own check on this drug and agree, it should be used with more restraint. It is currently the 12th most prescribed medicine. We are getting her off with the slow withdrawal.
Thanks for the post. We need more oversight on these drugs.

I found what you shared very interesting! I too have been on Metoprolol for several years and have had similar symptoms as you. With all the legal suits out there, why not on this one?? Probably because Big Pharma is making BIG MONEY on it, that's why, and until they create something else and want to retire it, it will remain.

I ended up in the hospital in Feb. 2014 for four days due to violent vomiting and intense chest and back pain. They did all the tests and at the end of it all, the heart specialist said he thought that maybe I was taking too much blood pressure meds (100 4 times a day). I took his advice and cut it immediately down to 50mg every 6-7 hours and felt alot better with a decrease of side effects. Now I'm trying to take 25mg at bedtime because my BP goes down into the low 40's (kept freaking the nurses out in the hospital). What blows my mind is that doctors act like they just don't know anything about how Metoprolol can cause all kinds of nasty side effects. Whaaat?? Just doesn't make sense!

I've had major breathing issues too, lots of fatigue, cramping in muscles, extreme dizziness... I think it is wiser to believe in Dr. Jesus more than Dr. Don't know nothing...Dr. Jesus guides me better than any doctor I've had so hope you know Him too.

Seems to be the better way to live down here!

I HAVE BEEN ON METROPOLOL FOR ABOUT 9 MONTHS IT HAS NOT LOWERED MY BP NOT AS MUCH AS I WANT. I FEEL TIRED ALL THE TIME AND I KNOW FOR SURE ITS NOT THE EXACT SAME DRUG AS LOPRESSOR WHICH LOWERED MY BP TO 130 OVER 80 . BUT THEY TOOK IT OFF THE MKT.AND I HEARD THAT A NEW COMPANY BOUGHT THE RIGHTS. I TOO HEARD ABOUT THE BAD WORKING ENVIROMENT THAT METROPOLOL HAS BEEN MANUFACTURED IN . I HOPE THE FDA CHECKS THEM OUT .HOPE THE NEW CO DISTRIBUTES THE LOPRESSOR FAST ITS THE ONLY BP MED I CAN TAKE WITH OUT SIDE EFFECTS.

i take metoprolol tartrate 25mg it made me tired at first and the dr said to lower my dose to 1/2 a pill twice a day it got rid of my tachycardia and the extra beat i have .
but i got a slew of side effects from taking this medicine every thing from head aches to muscle and bone pain cold clammy sweaty feet . and recently had to go to the er with my heart rate to low the dr there told me to lower my dose again and take 1/2 a pill in the day and then half the half at night . that was ok for awhile but now the tach is back and so is the extra beat its all driving me nuts gonna have to see the dr again an im sure there gonna tell me that i need to go back up in the dose or change to something else which i dont want to do . its pretty stupid all of this . my heart has been checked quite a few times and they always say your heart is just fine i dont understand whats causing the tach and the extra beat to happen in the first place

I dont know why others are having a problem. I know im not. I wa s taking the lopressor @ 50mg once a day. Now I take the metoprolol @ 25mg twice daily. No difference in reaction except I feel the medicatiin reaction thruout the day. Not only half. I have non of th sire effects I have read in these posts except for a dry throat from time to time, which is jot that bothersome. Since my start of this mee my hear rate has slightly slowed, has evened out, no more palpitations or out of no where fast beating or fluttering. My diastolic has dropped to the 70's. My systolic around 120-130 which is great. I take this wih lisinopril with hctz. And life is great now. I personally thank the makers for such a wonderful medication. Ive been on it since jan of this year (2013).
