Usually patients who take MTX also take folic acid 1mg daily which replaces the folic acid blocked by the medicine. Folic acid is needed for cell growth. Taking folic acid helps lesson the hair thinning, GI symptoms, mouth sores etc. My daughter's rheumatologist was an adult and didn't think folic acid was necessary. Oh boy it was bad she looked like a cancer patient. I ran to a pediatrician rheumatologist as soon as one was in our state and he added the folic acid. Please discuss this with your daughter's physician.

Hello! I hope your daughter is doing well. I am on 20mg of methotrexate weekly and I experienced hair loss along with other side effects. Please let your daughter know that the hair loss does slow down after a few months of being on the drug. It did for me so hopefully it will for her too. I take Leucovorin calcium 1 time a week and 2mg of folic acid daily to combat the side effects. Iron, b-12, biotin with zinc are great for boosting hair growth. I hope this helps! Take care!

Hello, Sherna37! How is your daughter?

When it comes to a chronic condition, such as Lupus, you really have to weigh the risks to her life and health against the medication side effects.

I'm female, so I'd not like my hair thinning, either, but it would be better than the complications that can arise, if her condition were left to rage out of control.

That said, she should stay on it, as long as her doctors deems it appropriate and safe for her to take it.

Other side effects to this medication, as listed by the FDA, may possibly include headache, dizziness and nausea.

Is there anything else I can help with?
