I'm About To Start Taking Lisinopril 10mg
(Newest replies first)

Updated

I've been prescribed lisinopril 10mg for hypertension but I'm reluctant to start taking it. I've read the side effects and lots of things are worrying me. Will I become too hypotensive after the first dose? Will I still wake up the next morning? Will I constantly experience dizziness? Can I drink alcohol? Will I end up with kidney failure? Will I develop a cough? Are there alternatives?

Swelling - it could be edema... Which your doctor will need to take a look at. It could be simple water retention. Swollen ankles, lips & throat are definitely things to have checked out.

While on it watch that you don't eat salt substitutes. Read labels. 'healthy' choice type foods, soups, etc often have 500-1000 mg of potassium chloride. Over time this will build up in your system and can cause irregular heart rhythm, problems with low blood pressure, etc. Normally if you drink lots of water during the day your kidneys will help keep your potassium levels good.

Watch out for the dreaded cough. I can take lisinopril from any manufacturer except lupin. Lupin comes from india and I swear every time I get it at the pharmacy I get the horrible coughing fits that make me cough til I vomit. Anyone else have problems with Lupin lisinopril?

Dizziness - until your bp gets stabilized get up slowly and sit slowly. Your pressure might drop suddenly and you go from light headed to passing out potentially.

Alternatives - there are many and they all have side effects. The only safe way to fight hypertension is diet and exercise. Get to a fit weight. Watch your salt intake. Avoid stress..Yeah right.

I have been taking lisinopril for the past 2 years and it has lowered my BP, but today I noticed that my right leg close to the ankle was swollen and my left swollen also but Much less. I read some were that that is a side effect of this drug. Is this dangerous?

I have stopped taking two bp meds and cut my lisinopril down to 20mg from 40mg. I started by stopping drinking and losing 28lbs. I also purchased a BowFlex Max Trainer and I have been using it religiously as well as working out with dumbbells for the last six weeks. I plan to cut my lisinopril in half again in a week and be done with all of my bp meds in four weeks. My Dr told me, get my heart rate over 120 bpm for 20 min a day. I workout now instead of taking a pill. My numbers seemed to be moving up and I had no control even with three meds my bottom number was 100 or so in the mornings. I am 45 with a high stress job. I hope this gives you hope.

I'v been taking Lisinophril for about a month now, and this medication works well. The only side effects that I'm having is a dry cough, and mild dizziness which is common when using any medication. Once you start taking this medication, the side effects wears off. My blood pressure was 191/110 when I started taking lisinophril it drop down to 114/80 which is the normal for high blood pressure.

My wife had recently been diagnosed with high BP and she has been prescribed with Lisinopril. My question is how can she reduce her BP which is around 170/100, ie is it by completely stop taking salt, or exercising or alternatively reducing weight. Does leading a healthy lifestyle helps to eliminate the high BP problem one day?

There are risks to taking any medication, however, it is a much greater risk to let your hypertension continue uncontrolled, because it is guaranteed to cause serious health problems and possibly death.

Lisinopril works well for many people, with no serious side effects and there are always others, like myself, that are sensitive to it and experience bad side effects and must switch to something else.

The only way to find out if it works for you is to actually try it for several weeks. It generally takes 4 to 6 weeks for a medication like this to reach its full effectiveness.

Drinking alcohol can result in worsened side effects, such as nausea, drowsiness and dizziness and it can also lower your blood pressure, even more. This means you need to be cautious if you are going to do so.

Side effects, such as those I already mentioned, are usually temporary and will wear off, after your body gets used to the medication. If they are severe or continue past a month of use, then you need to contact your doctor.

Yes, there are alternatives, however, they also risk side effects and problems, just as any medication does.

I don't know if your doctor will want to let you try something else, if this one scares you too much, but there are a few others that are known to cause fewer side effects and in some people, they don't cause any.

One of them is Carvedilol:

and another is Atacand:

As I mentioned already, I had severe problems with Lisinopril and turned out to be very sensitive to many blood pressure medications. I spent several months switching one for another, until we finally found ones that work for me, without making me completely miserable.

I currently take both Carvedilol and Atacand and the only problem I have there is that, sometimes, the Atacand works too well and I have to switch to a lower dosage. If it starts to climb, then I have to go to a higher dosage, again, for awhile.

Are there any other questions or comments?
