Been on 20 mg of methadone for six years. How long will it take to get out of my system? Thanks in advance.

This is only intended to be an estimate, but most medications are usually out of your system within about 5 days after your last dose. And usually for drugs like this, the safest way to stop taking them is to taper off them under a doctor's supervision, if possible. So if you end up tapering, (which may be appropriate based on your description), then it will probably take a while longer before you can have your 'last dose' of methadone. Cold-turkeying just doesn't sound feasible after six years on any medication.

Eating plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, staying hydrated throughout the day, and getting plenty of rest each night, will significantly aid your body in detoxing quicker. Besides that, I'd also urge you to get at least an hour each day of exercise in to help sweat out any toxins and get your lymphatic system flowing (which will significantly aid in detoxification as well).

I hope this helps!

Editor's note: Methadone has an estimated half life of 37.5 hours, so a single dose would take over 17 days for your body to metabolize it. [1]

I can only speak from my experience but I was on 90mg of methadone for 2 years and after many failed attempts to lower dose and ween off I went into a 4 month rehab program and after 2 weeks In med detox being weened off it still took a solid 2 months before I was able to eat, sleep and walk farther than 10 feet. Hope the best

Hi. I'm on 120 mgs of methadone...and 3 mgs of Xanax. And I have chronic congestive heart failure and I went into full cardiac arrest and respiratory failure. I'm 35. I was asked if I ever did coke intravenously. I have never used and there yes but never liked it... My cardiologist said he would not recommend me getting off of Xanax or methadone... I have a 13 month old who honestly and thankfully didn't go through wd's. I thank God every day although I don't believe in that I'm just using it as an expression. Methadone takes 5-7 days to completely get out of ur system... Yes ur teeth chip, they get weak.. they pull off all the enamel. I'm in school to become a substance abuse counselor. Methadone workers will say it's all a myth and it's not at all!!! It's true... believe me I'm living proof. I went from a beautiful smile to barely showing my teeth. I had perfect beautiful teeth until I got on methadone. The doctors and other people on here are going to say it's a like a myth. And I'm telling you right now don't argue with me about this topic, I've been in it for many years. You will not win this argument.

5-7 days. I promise you. I've gone through this...I was trying Suboxone and the doc said I have to wait until 7 days to be sure that it's completely outta my system.
