Gabapentin Side Effects Rapid Pulse (Top voted first)

Updated

Can Gabapentin cause a rapid pulse? Usually my pulse is 60-70 at rest, now it's up to 85-105 at rest.

Yes, I am experiencing increased heart rate after taking gabapentin. I've been taking this drug for 2 weeks now, and I've done an extensive search of possible side effects, but have not found rapid heart rate listed anywhere. MIne normally is in the 75-85 range, but now I'm in the 90-115 range. That's too high. I'm hoping after my body gets used to the gabapentin it will return to normal. If it doesn't, I will have to cease taking it. The other side effects I experienced over the first week have all pretty much gone away....mild high feeling, unsteadiness, hunger (got the major munchies the 2nd day), and kind of spaced out but still able to perform work functions.

Yes, I have been only taking 300 mg at night for the past 3 nights. I have been waking up feeling just not right with a racing feeling. Tonight I got up and put my blood pressure cuff on and I have a heart rate of 106. This is an alarming rate while sleeping. Especially since I normally have a rate in the mid 60s. My blood pressure was 123/78 which is also a bit high for me. Again, especially high for sleeping.

I started on gabapentin in February of this year and my Dr. gradually increased my dose and now I'm on (3) 100mg 3 X a day so now I'm up to 900 mg a day. I noticed the last few weeks that I have real bad anxiety. I take medication for anxiety but only at night. I'm wondering if I should ask my Doctor if we should cut back on the gabapentin?!?! Is anyone else going through this?

I am definitely reporting this to the company. You would think by now they would have documented this side effect as neurontin has been around forever! It's not a coincidence that there are so many reports of rapid heart beat with the neuro. Sometimes meds have the opposite effect in patients. In the cases of increased heart rate, it appears that there is an excitatory effect vs the standard inhibitory effect of neurontin. I am so glad we only gave my mom who is 90 100 mgs to start with. We were trying to address her idiopathic pain with the neuro but now I am sticking with a homeopathic regimen involving PEA PURE. There are many pain specialists that know about its positive effects on pain. The problem is that it does not kick in right away. I get the one made in Netherlands as it is 100% pure. I am also giving her GABA from Thorne research. Years ago before she had the afib a neurologist started her on 300 mgs which is such a bad idea in the elderly. After one dose, her legs swelled up so we stopped immediately. But no thanks to that brilliant neurologist! Sorry for side tracking there but it proves we are our own best advocates and everyone has individual responses to medications.

I have also had an increased heart rate 75 vs. the usual 60. This side effect should be documented by the pharma company.
Very wired and uneasy feeling on it as well. Not a good med for me. Stopping it now.

Wow, this is crazy that you say this. My Mom has been taking neurontin 100 mgs about 5 days and she had Afib. We are constantly monitoring her heart rate with a pulse meter and have noticed the heart rate has increased from 65 to mid 80s. I am now very concerned and will have her cease taking it immediately. 100 mgs is the lowest dose to start with. I give her magnesium in a chelated form to keep the heart rate down and she only takes metoporol extended release 25 mgs twice a day. I give her lots of supplements too to keep the heart healthy. She has been doing great until recently taking this med. all the best.

I took neurontin/gabapentin for one month. After two weeks of taking it I started to notice that my heart rate sped up(especially at night). I also experienced a weird muscle twitch in my arm. After about 3 weeks of taking it I began to notice that my stomach did not feel all that good. One night I ate a pizza and drank a 40 oz of steel reserve because that is what guys do. Steel reserve is one of the strongest beers that you can buy today in case you didn't know. Anyway after I ate my pizza and drank the beer i felt this weird numb feeling in my stomach. I knew something was wrong. I haven't touched alcohol since that night. it was 3 weeks ago and I am showing definate signs of having g.e.r.d also known as Acid reflux disease. My symptoms have not gone away and it sucks. i have made extreme diet changes and noticed slight improvement as far as my heartburn goes but I still get it. Omeprazole also helps the symptoms but it hasn't cured it. I am scheduled to see a g.i doctor December 16th of this year. Word to the wise, do not take neurontin/gabapentin. It is extremely unhealthy to the human body in my opinion and seriously do not drink alcohol on it. If anyone else has had a similiar problem with taking gabapentin and getting g.e.r.d. I urge them to get in touch with me. I would like to find somebody to talk to who has also had this happen to them. My email address is {edited for privacy}

Weird. I was prescribed gabapentin a few months ago for pain in scar tissue and pinched nerve from surgery. It's helping but now I have burning mouth syndrome! So I was taking 300 mg twice a day and went down to once a day because I also get fluttery heart. Never had bms before. Never even heard of it. I tried gargling with Epsom salts and stopped drinking coffee. Good luck to you with the bms. It's very uncomfortable.

And how are you feeling right now ? Did you notice these effects every time you took the Gabapentin ? Rapid heart beat is not specifically listed as a side effect of this medication, however there are other side effects which may be related ... such as dizziness, tremor, nausea, blurred vision. Have you had any of these? Medications which have a neurological effect on the body can certainly come with their own complications. Can you talk about any other details of your experience with this?

My heart rate increased 20-40 bpm on 10 mg of gabapentine. I tried it for about a month. It also caused increased anxiety. I stopped taking it.

I have also been on this for about two weeks now and have noticed the rapid heart rate. Today I went to see the doctor and they acted like it was no big deal and doubled the dose because the tingling in my foot has gotten worse since I've been taking the stuff. If it keeps it up, or gets worse, I will be weening myself off of it (even before my next apt):/

I've been working my way up from 100mg ever day. So today is Day 3 and I'm at 300 mg. I’m feeling better with 300mg in my system today but my heart rate has been around 97 in bed for a couple days in a row and that’s apparently a common side effect. Anxiety is also a side effect — maybe that’s normal when your heart is racing. A few days ago it was only 78bpm. I think I was on 100mg then. I haven’t taken any Norco today and my pain is definitely better with 300 than 200 so I’m experimenting to see if the anxiety is lower without the Norco. I’m also super tired but that’s par for the course. I'm taking it for a torn acetabular labrum/ possible CRPS, coldness and numbness slightly, more in the injured leg.
I’m curious about natural alternatives.

I have been taking gabapentin for about 5 months and this is my second time taking it (I took it for quite a few months last year. I didn't really notice an increased heart rate then but I guess I wasn't paying much attention and it wasn't effecting me if it was. I do however have increased heart rate now. The doctor didn't really seem concerned until just recently when I was going to be having surgery for a herniated disk (which is why I've been taking it). Its weird because by blood pressure is fine. The doctor put me on something to slow down my heart rate for the sake of surgery but I have just recently finished it and I'm noticing the increased heart rate again. Its not too bad resting but when I'm moving it is higher than it should be. I go back and see the surgeon in about a week for a follow up and I still have a little nerve pain but not too much so I'm hoping I can start slowly coming off it. Hopefully that will fix my problem. I was getting concerned as I was looking at side effects of the that medication and not seeing increased heart rate but seeing that other people have had that problem after taking it makes me feel better. I hope yours gets better!
