Eliquis And Weight: I Need The Truth (Page 2)

Updated

Today I am speaking with my hemotologist about switching from Xarelto to Eliquis. Xarelto has caused me, a runner with a very slim diet, to gain almost 14 pounds in 4 weeks. 7 of those pounds in the last two weeks.

I need to know of any serious weight gain issues with Eliquis. Doctors always swear that the side effects listed are the only ones but I was never told by my doctor nor the literature that Xarelto causes abnormal weight gain either. Google had to tell me that after yesterday's terrible weigh-in. I'm looking for absolute candor. I am 34 and female and I'd be taking it for PE.

Thanks.

Have gained weight since starting Eliquis 3 weeks ago. I find it increased my appetite and also I am retaining a lot of water, feeling bloated most of the time. Unfortunately, it gives me heartburn and upset stomach, which is why I think it's important that I eat when I take the medicine. Also, I am experiencing severe fatigue, resulting in my being less active and less likely to burn off the extra calories from the food. This is just what I'm experiencing, don't know if anyone else has same side effects. Hope this helps.

I have stopped taking it but cannot lose the weight either! Both of my Drs do not believe that it was the cause of weight gain. Claiming weight LOSS is a side effect, not gain.

I am not a runner but I have been working out at the gym and managing calorie/carb,fat intake for 2 years. I lost 50 pounds. I have been on Eliquis 1 month and have gained 7 pounds. There is no other explanation for this weight gain other than I started taking Eliquis. Very distressing.

My husband is 67 and he's been on Eliquis for 5 months and he has lost 38 lbs. In fact he now has to watch himself losing more. He has changed his diet to eating clean but not cutting back on amount. I hope this helps!

Re: gt (# 7) Expand Referenced Message

My husband was on eliquis for 7 months and lost over 40lbs had headaches , low iron and other problems amd just not feeling well and in july 2017 had a large brain bleed and he passed away. I don't know if anyone knows this but if you have a bleed while taking this drug there is no antidote to stop the bleeding .I believe this medication killed him because he was never a sick person and only 55 and so full of life, he also was telling his Dr this whole time about his symptoms and not one of them ever thought of thr medication. His iron levels were also low.

I have learned the hard way not to trust most medicines.... but not as hard as you. Thank you for sharing this.

Hi Vickie I'm so sorry to hear about your husband. That's so sad! Did your husband have side affects?

Xarelto was almost like a death sentence for me but it helped my sister tremendously,. I asked the hematologist to switch me and he would not (I'm assuming they get kickbacks for the prescriptions written but do not know). I finally tossed out the Xarelto and asked for a new option. The office secretary told me that both hematologists suggested that I continue taking Xarelto. I was totally ignored so I went without a blood thinner until my next prescription came due and continued it (Because I had a PE and could feel the damage it was doing). Finally, I found a PCP who listened to my issues (but didn't record them as a problem only 'swelling' when it was so much more--swelling, cognitive issues, falling, seeing flashes of light, slow heartbeat, etc. etc.) and I started on Eliquis. While I haven't had any problems with any of the aforementioned, I suspect the 35 pound weight gain is attributed to Eliquis. I now have a DVT so once that is over, I plan to stop all medication b/c no one will listen here. Weight gain is a nonissue to the doctors in this area. I've cried, pleaded, and now I'm just out of options. I can't gain any additional weight because it is ruining my life and health. With that said, Eliquis is a godsend as long as you don't have a weight problem to begin with.

Re: TriCities Patient (# 36) Expand Referenced Message

I'm sorry the Dr's won't listen to you! How rude and rotten!
There are many things you can do to help keep your blood thin- regular exercise, certain vitamins and minerals like vit E and magnesium among others, stay hydrated, and the typical things like do not stay too inactive for too long.
Good luck to you!

I have been on Eliquis for 9 months for a DVT.
I have gained 30lbs. I started the gym, only 2-3 days a week. I admit that my diet was not the best, but I did not gain weigh like this before taking Eliquis. I like being safe and healthy but I can't wait to get off the meds.

I had heart paplations at the time i was stressed out i was taking care of my brother who was dying. My family dr sent me to cardiologist he put me on blood pressure meds. I wore a heart monitor for a week it showed 1 episode of AFib, that was 4 months ago. I had Ekg was normal . I have never had anymore symptoms, however my cardiologist wants me to take Eliquis i dont want to take it if its not necessary. I've had surgeries and have never had a dvt. Dr says he wants me to take as a prevention. Saw cardiologist today he didnt evan listen to my heart im going to go to my family Dr and ask for different cardiologist. Im a therapist i. Just dont think i want to take medicine until its proven to me its necessary. What would you do?

Re: Karen (# 39) Expand Referenced Message

Hi Karen. I don't blame you for not wanting to take meds for life without knowing your true need. I have a blood clotting condition but its never caused me big problems yet. Hematologist wants me on blood thinner for life, but for now I am off them and trying more natural methods. I take a lot of vitamins and minerals for my bones and added vit C, vit e, fish oil, and extra magnesium to the mix, as I've read they help thin blood.
So far so good- the tiniest cut bleeds and bleeds! ??????
Remember- it's your body! And Dr's make these assertions because they are textbook... and protect them if something happens to us!
