After 10 years of taking Hydrocodone for Chronic lower back pain, doses increasing over the years, my new PM Doctor has started me on Morphine Sulfate 15 mg ER at bed time. Also take 5 each Norco 10-325 during the day. I was taking 6 each Norco 10-325 a day, but needed/wanted 8 or 10 a day. Wishing I had a pickup truck load of Norco 10-325. Loved the stuff, but 6 a day was not easing the pain any longer. I would run out every month a week early. Normally I would take a Xanax 1 mg, sometime 2, at night and knock right to sleep. Last night was the first time I took the Morphine Sulfate 15 mg ER at bed time. I Had to take 2 each Xanax and only slept 3 or 4 hours. BTW, Norco 10-325 always gives me a buzz and energy to get up and do things. Has anyone experienced this sleep problem? Also, does anyone have an idea where this PM Doctor is heading? What types of Narcotics do PM Doctors normally want to precscribe for pain medications. I've learned that Hydrocodone is not for long term/chronic pain. I believe the PM Doctor wants to rid me of the Hydrocodone and move me to the Morphine Sulfate 15 mg ER. If I wish her to increase the amount of the MS, how much should I ask for? What other kinds of PM drugs are available for Chronic Pain and that may be like Hydrocodone (the buzz and energy of, I like)? Thanks for any responses with any help, experience or advice.

Narcotics do have that effect on some people that take them. It is far more common for Morphine to cause drowsiness, which is likely why your doctor prescribed it to be taken at bedtime. However, if it's energizing you, you may need to discuss taking it in the morning, instead.

This is a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, dry mouth and constipation.

Usually, PM doctors try to get you on something long-acting, such as this to get your pain under control and minimize the need for short acting medications.

Are there any other questions or concerns?

Hi, saw your post and although I haven't tried morphine I have taken norco 5/325 for neck pain over the years but it always gives me a stomach ache. Was wondering what generic manufacturer you use so when I see my pain management doctor I may ask him to up me to the 10/325 norco. I know all generics are different and the one I had was by Watson. Thanks for any input.

I've been taking morphine sulfate 15 mg er 3 times a day and morphine sulfate 15 mg ir 4 times a day for a couple of years. With muscle relaxants, the morphine is relieving most of my severe chronic low back pain.

I take 100 mg morphine sulphate er 2x daily for severe kneen injuries ( 6 surgeries ) and back pain along with 2 mg Xanax at night to help me sleep because the morphine keeps me up. That is what my Dr has me on, but next week he may go 200 mg 2x daily
