Different Brands Of Oxcodone

Updated

I am a 70 year old female who has been taking Oxycodone for many, many years. I severely suffer with pain caused by degenerative arthritis. I have had four surgeries involving spinal fusions, etc, plus numerous other surgeries involving bones/joints all over my body. Oxycodone has in the past been helpful with controlling my pain, at least to a point. When my pharmacy changed to the Zudus brand, everything completely changed in a very bad way. This brand does nothing for my pain, and only makes me extremely sleepy. I live with constant pain. I have checked with pharmacies in my area and cannot find any other available brands. Please suggest ways to find another manufacturer that will help me. I really cannot continue with this terrible pain. Thank you for any help you may offer.

Hello, Mimibutter! How are you? I'm sorry about the problems you're having.

As to the pharmacies all saying they don't have any from other manufacturers, unless you're walking in with a valid prescription in hand, you are usually not going to get accurate information. Since this is a controlled substance, they have rules on discussing such things with people, to try to avoid theft. They will also not give accurate answers to such questions over the phone.

One solution would be to talk to your doctor about writing your future prescriptions as 'brand medically necessary', or whatever is equivalent in your state. Then they can no longer give you various generics.

It could also be that it's time for a dosage adjustment, or for you to try a different medication.

Does anyone else have any ideas, or suggestions?

I know this post is old but maybe someone will find this information helpful. It is certainly difficult to find specific brands, especially if you're not in a large city. However you have some options.

1. When calling pharmacists, ask them which brands they are able to get, instead of what they have in stock. This way they're not worried about you coming to rob them and know you're probably a legitimate patient. Even walgreens offered to order almost any brand of medications for me, as I am a regular patient with them.

2. If you are in pain management, ask them if they know what pharmacy other patients use for that medication. They usually have a good amount of information because of the regulations they have to follow, but they may be hesitant because it somehow seems like a privacy issue to them. Just remind them you don't want any personal info, just which pharmacies might have different options.

3. Ask your insurance company if they can help you find more information. It's less likely, but could be worth a try. Many have separate companies that administer their drug plans (Optum, etc) and these reps are slightly more knowledgeable.

I personally would not ask your doctor to write 'Brand Only' on any prescription unless you have confirmed with your insurance that it is covered. You could end up without meds for days because the out-of-pocket cost is thousands of dollars and now you have to get a new written Rx because they can't fill 'Brand Only' with a generic. This recently happened to me when I wanted brand percocet because of side effects with a generic- it was over $2500 for 120 tablets!!

Thank you so much for your information. I'm just about ready to give up completely on any pain medication. I don't seem to get any pain relief from these meds, as they only tend to make me sleepy with the pain remaining untouched. It's really hard to even try to live a normal life with pain dominating every second of every day.
