Differences Between Adderall Ir And Adderall Xr Generics
(Newest replies first)

Updated

My name is Phil and I am 18 years old. I weigh 170 lbs and I am 6'3. At the beginning of my Freshman year of college I was diagnosed with ADHD and Social Anxiety Disorder. I currently take Adderall IR 10 mg (Barr Generic) once per day and Adderall XR 20 mg (Actavis Generic) once per day. I take Zoloft 100mg (American Health). My question is this: What are your experiences with the different generic brands?

From what I have heard, for Adderall IR Sandoz/Eon has worked well with a lot of people, for Adderall XR Actavis (what I take) is really bad and I'd like to hear about Global and Barr, and I haven't researched Zoloft. Since I haven't tried any brands, I can't really compare these to anything.

Here is the list of generics I have heard of (the asterisk means I'm specifically interested about this brand)

Adderall IR:
Barr (Current)
Sandoz/Eon*
Teva*
Mallinckrodt
Ranbaxy
Aurolife
Sun
CorePharma

Adderall XR:
Actavis (Current)
Global Pharmaceuticals*
Barr*
American Health Packaging (?)

Zoloft:
Teva
International
Camber
PD-RX
Lupin
Greenstone
American Health Packaging
Sandoz
Actavis

Here are links to photos of all the different brands:

Thanks guys!

Re: OP (# 1) Expand Referenced Message

About the Adderall instant release Teva not sure how the situation went down. Teva somehow ended up with the patent from Shire. What I'm told that would make Teva a brand name like Shire to me those are the best I get them at Walgreens. Maybe your antidepressants are not working I haven't experienced different brands to me they just don't work and I have to change. I hope this helps you

Since generics use the same list of ingredients, but the manufacturing *process* remains proprietary, effectiveness can vary 40-60% and side effects are completely different from generic to generic. Indeed, since the Shire-manufactured "generic" was taken off the market in 2013/14, i've tried 3-4 different kinds/protocols, no two alike.
The absolute WORST is Actavis. This is a recent product, and cheap - every single pharmacy in my town switched to it when it came out. Here's the thing: Actavis is the first Adderall generic to not even use the same ingredients as the original brand. Yup. so you are about as far from the the product you want as possible.

The GOOD news is - well, background first:
As I indicated, Shire used to manufacture its *own* generic - exactly the same product, with "shire" listed as manufacturer, but not identified on the capsule itself. This was available when I began taking Adderall, and having lived with knock-offs since 2014, i can assure you that there is no comparison. It is smooth, reliable, and virtually no side-effects after the initial sensations of "i don't need to eat... or sleep" wear off ;->

Shire's clone disappeared from the market as a result of an extended court case which was finally resolved in 2013. The agreement reached was that beginning in July 2016, SANDOZ would become the sole distributor of Shire-manufactured "generic" Adderall xr.

I've been looking for some indication that this is actually in the works, there's been no news since the 2013 story. Even when it *does* come back on the market, you will still be at the mercy of whatever your local pharmacies decide to keep in their warehouse.

I'm taking the Teva/Barr product right now. Not as effective, but minimal side effects compared to others.

I only posted because you said you were on Actavis. You can do better. It sounds like you may have already toured some of the ADD/ADHD forums, and I'm glad.
The forums are the only reason i got through any of this without questioning my own sanity: the on-line "community" of people who depend on these meds compensates for the scarcity of docs (usually primary care providers) who truly and consistently take patient experiences seriously. Validating information can be an important resource.

Hang in there, good luck, and hope for the best in July ;->!
