Coumadin Vs Warfarin
(Newest replies first)

Updated

My mom was on coumadin for many years but then her insurance company told her she had to take warfarin as this is the one they would pay for. Is there really any different in these two drugs? It seems to me that she has been having more problems with the warfarin (keeping this medication at the right level) than the coumadin. I was told they were the same medications and do the same. I just wanted to know if some people have difficulties taking warfarin vs coumadin??? Thanks.

My Hematologist was adamant that I stay on Coumadin, but I know that the pharmacy always fills my prescription with Warfarin. What is the difference between the two? I am positive for Anticoagulant Lupus.

Please let us know. I have been on both..then I was switched to Xarelto was doing great until I was told to go back on Coumadin as my embolism is caused by own body..I inherited this from my grandfather according to blood tests..funny they recommend Coumadin, but prescribed Warfarin. Go figure I’m not sure they know.

My Hematologist said that it is not the same. Studies have shown that the INR does not fluctuate as much using Coumadin.

I developed a dvt day following surgery. Was started w the lovenox/Warfarin vombo (lovenox to bridge till INR in therapeutic range). Took three weeks of Warfarin and had a plethora of side effects... dizzy, nauseated, headache, lethargic and what i would call severe brain fog and even noticed coordination affected. Made switch to brand name Coumadin and while I still feel no where near my normal self I have noticed the dizziness and lethargy have subsided a bit and headache and nausea totally gone now. The difference was worth it to me.

Warifrin and coumadian are not identical in doss a 2 mg coumadin will be close to its 2 mg dose, but the warfin by FDA Regs is allowed to be anywhere from 20% higher or lower than 2 mg dose. Do your research, foods such as greens can effect it because of the vitamin K, but If you watching your diet, and are haveing surges in PT/INR it's probably the warfin. Because one pill could be @ 80% and the next two @120. Hope this is helpful to some one. God bless and a great day. Remember I didnt make the rules FDA did, thx

I don't think Dr. Pierre is a medical doctor. A medical doctor would not spell warfarin as "wafarine."

I have had shortness of breath since 6 mo's after my aortic valve replacement for a St. Jude valve and I was 50yrs old. Now I am wondering if it is from the Warfarin. I ended up in the hospital last week. In 3wks time my INR went from 2.1 to 9.1!!!! I was bleeding from my upper kidney. I have been sad so I tried a supplement 5-HTP that is suppose to be fine with blood thinners. I also called the company that makes it before starting it. Guess what, it's not safe.

I don't think there is a difference between different vitamin-K-antagonists, however, I do think that these drugs could have a pathogenetic role in lung fibrosis. Vitamin K has more functions in the body than activation of clotting factors in the liver. It has to activate Matrix Gla Protein (MGP); the strongest natural inhibitor of tissue-calcification. Vitamin-K-antagonists accelerate vascular calcification. I suspect that these drugs could do the same in the lungs. Based on the medical literature regarding anticoagulants and IPF, I think Low-Molecular-Weight Heparins are the safest alternative.

My mom cannot take warfarin. it is not like coumadin. it caused her to need 5 units of plasma. warfarin should have a lot of legal cases because of this. you can not get it thru to the nurses or pharmacist. it has almost killed her twice. nurses will try to sneak warfarin by.

My hair has been thinning very much in the last 6 months. I have been on Warfarin for 5years and will be for the rest of my life (74) because of mechanical heart valve (aorta and mitral). Could the warfarin contribute? I have also been taking metoprolal and multaq 400 twice a day since the beginning of year. I am trying to get to the bottom of this before I have no hair left. Any comments?

My grandmother has been on both warfarin and coumadin, which are indeed the same drug, but like others have mentioned- dosage levels differ. As to your specific question I am not certain of the precise answer. But I do know when my grandmother was taking them she developed a chronic cough, which she was told was a side effect. Since you mentioned breathing issues, I thought I'd mention my grandmothers case since it may indeed be a side effect of your medication. But any difficulty breathing should be taken seriously so definitely report it to your physician.

I had two episodes of AFIB while out of the country. The doctors ibn Scotland put me on Xralto and a beta blocker metatopralal. I returned to USA and saw a cardiologist that ordered a VQ scan kept me on Xralto and metatopralal. Then I read all the concern about Xralto and called the cardiologist and asked to be placed on a different blood thinner. I am having side effects from one of the drugs, I am short of breath sometimes, dizzy, cold hands and feet, vivid dreams and a general uneasy feeling. I do not want to offend my new cardiologist. But why would he put me on Xralto.

I am a cardiac patient. I was taking warfarin but my pt/inr was all over the place. My cardiologist put me on Coumadin and it stabilized. What do I or my cardiologist have to do with my ins. co. to prescribe brand and not have to pay 5 prices for it? Express Scripts/Formulary/Non-Formulary. Thx.
