Coumadin - Discontinued?

Updated

I would like to know why the drug Coumadin is being discontinued? I am from Trinidad WI and I have been informed that the drug is no longer being manufactured. I would like to know what is the reason for this and what are people like myself who have been on it for 22 years to do or take in instead?

The drug kills people. My mother died while taking it. And I lost a good friend who was 48 years old.

Coumidin is not being discontinued. I have been on it for 1 yr and my numbers cannot get set and kept right. I jump from high to low and can't stay in the middle. But there is a new drug out. You take 2 pills a day 12 hours apart and no more blood testing. I am searching now for the medication as it is. The spelling begins with PRA----. It was on TV today and said it works better than Warfarin and no more blood test. I am interested in taking it because I have to be checked twice a week and now do my own at home and it is always being changed my dose that is. It has caused ne to go of all my vitamins and alternative meds. I am losing my hair and not a happy person. I see my hemotologist in 3 weeks and you can bet we will discuss this medication and hopefully I can take it.

Rat poison... Who would dream they use humans for their lab rats?

Please be careful of this drug. My mother had a stroke 9 yrs ago and they put her on Coumadin to keep the blood thin. She started feel more tired than usual this past summer and went to the doctor to have her blood work done... everything was fine... until Wed, Sept 28th when she went to the doctor to see why she was having shortness of breath.... the ER found 3 blood clots in her lungs and did some blood work and found AML and gave her 2 -3 days to live... she died Oct 1. She was not a smoker and never been around benzine... but I googled AML Coumadin and found that there is a link. Had she known that... we could have had them check her bone marrow last summer. That's where AML hangs out until it bursts into your blood and by then it's leathal... I am certain Coumadin caused the AML! Be careful... have a bone marrow check done to be certain if you're having any symptons of AML.

Quit eating greens and anything with vitamin K and use low dose 81mg aspirin. I've had no more problems since. All those meds have rat poison in them, and the name of the drug you are talking about is Pradaxa. The more drugs the doctors prescribed the more they make.

My doctor told me that I was going to die if I didn't take coumadin. Well that has been 2 years since I quit taking that dumb ass rat poison. Well just goes to show u doctors don't know everything. They like to play god, just a little too often. They think we're lab rats. The same goes for cancer, chemo and radiation. They both are toxic chemicals. So why do u think it keeps on coming back? They don't care about you. It's the money. Greed does funny things to people.

Marci,

You might be thinking of pradaxa, which is used instead of warfarin to treat people with atrial fibrillation.

I know some doctors try to push a "no vitamin k" diet for people taking Coumadin but that is unnecessary. You CAN have vitamin K, but you have to find out how much you can eat daily and then stick to that amount.

I'd personally recommend "The Coumadin Cookbook" since it contains a list of common food items & their vitamin K content. And of course avoid cranberries and grapefruit since they both enhance the blood-thinning effect of the medication.

What did you take instead of Coumadin ? What were you taking it for that he would say such a remark.
