Coming Off Of Celexa

Updated

Hello all, I am currently taking 40mg of Celexa, and have been for about 7 months. I originally started taking it because I had pretty bad anxiety and I would "worse case scenario" things in my head. The celexa seemed to stop these things fairly quickly, but now I have started on 25mg of Adderall XR after being diagnosed with ADHD (im 15). The Adderall helps me to focus and my grades have been rising, the original stress and anxiety was from school and grades.

I think I would like to stop taking the Celexa because I feel like I don't really need it anymore and some of the side effects scare me. Like I said I tend to worse case things, and I guess im a bit paranoid (not to the crazy extent though) about some things. After seeing stories in the news about these tragic mass murders and some stories about children senselessly murdering family members I started to reconsider my SSRI intake. Although I have not had these thoughts, or ever had a thought about killing myself or someone else I am concerned that maybe these SSRI's are effecting how I think and I just do not know it. Anyway, I probably sound like a whack-job but I figured I'd pose this question to the interwebs to get some first hand experience. If I do stop taking the SSRI's will I even notice? I do not feels stressed or anxious much anymore but I dont know if thats just the medicine doing its job or if the Adderall has solved my problems. Like I said before I am just curious if stopping the SSRI would seriously effect me, because if not I think I'd like to stop them.

Thanks, Garrett

Hi Garett,

I understand your concerns, as I have dealt with anxiety for the majority of my life. I wouldn't discontinue the use of the SSRI'S all at once, I would taper off of them over the span of a few weeks so that your body can get used producing serotonin on its own. Make sure to log or jot down any changes (mental or physical) that you notice during and/or after weening off the medication. Also, be sure to stay in contact with your doctor during this process.

If I can recommend anything else, it would be the supplements 5-htp and holy basil. I have and still do use these to help with my anxiety.

As an adolescent, your thoughts and feelings are like a roller coaster, so what you're worrying about is normal. I am a 29 y/o graduate student and I take celexa as well as adderall when needed to study. I wouldn't stop taking celexa cold turkey and I definitely wouldn't stop taking it without consulting with your doctor. Prescription drugs are nothing to tinker with on your own. Talk to your doctor about your concerns and together you can work on a plan to taper off the antidepressants/anxiety meds, if you choose to do so. You can have some pretty bad side effects if you quit altogether.
