Buro Sol Discontinued? (Page 2) (Top voted first)

Updated

I went to my pharmacy today here in Canada to be told that Smith Kline Glaxo is no longer making Buro Sol. Is this the case and, if it is, what are my alternatives?

I visited Habers yesterday. The pharmacist told me they had had a couple of enquiries for a replacement for BuroSol and turned them down. First, despite the product being an over the counter product and because of legal requirements, they need a doctor's prescription, and they haven't received any yet. I said I felt sure my doctor would provide one for me. Also, they felt the expense would be so great - probably at least 4 times the cost of the otc BuroSol - that few people would want them to make it up. However, he seemed to warm more to the idea when I told him many of us use it as a preventative for swimmers ear and use the product daily after swimming, showering etc and we would want to get it in large quantities - say a pint at a time. He took my phone number and e-mail in case he changes his mind.

I suggest that anyone who agrees with me contact Habers and let them know. They are located on Bathurst north of St Clair in Toronto.

Thanks to the lady who put me on to them.

Tried to work local and get Habers to compound here in Toronto but frustrated as I did get them the ingredient list from GSK as they asked but then they needed a prescription. Process getting lengthy here (and frustrating) so I contacted Chiron Compounding Pharmacy in Guelph (posted earlier) I heard back quickly and after a followup conversation with Scott found out they compound a substitute for Buro-Sol powder and my delivery is being sent today! Call them toll free 1-800-446-8689 ex 227 for Scott (pharmacist) and put an end to your frustrations! Not cheap but order the larger container (23.6 gm) for $56.35 and mix up your own. 1 tsp mixes in 500 ml water so makes good quantities. shipping $8.95. Perhaps the more ordered then less the cost will become?? Will be worth it for me and my sore-pawed-dawg :)

It's been discontinued in Canada. Couldn't find it in the US during my travels.

In Canada, only alternative is to contact a compounding pharmacy to make some up for you. See this thread for further details and Toronto area contact info.

Otherwise, maybe your wife can try ear drying solutions or, in the event of otitis, an antibacterial ear drop. I believe one may be marketed as polysporin.

Domesboro was the only thing I used in the states
And when I came up to Canada I was afraid I couldn't find anything like Domesboro, but thankfully borosol was the exact same. Now I'm back to Domesboro from the States

Thanks Adrian! I'm forwarding my concerns (begging for some BuroSol basically) too....on behalf of all us dermatillomaniacs, there's no replacement, nothing at all comparable, and I've tried every one of them almost.

Hello, Burosol has been reintroduced as dermburo (dermtek.com/products/dermoburo.html) and can be purchased or at least ordered at any pharmacy in Canada.

If you live in Canada, Shoppers Drug Mart sells Dermburo. Contact the manufacturer for other distributors in your area: dermtek.com/products/dermburo.html

If you live in the USA, Walmart sells Domeboro on their website.

The web site indicates that the powder has been discontinued yes. ( not the ear drops for swimmers ear )

I've checked local pharmacies to see if they have any left over stock.... None
I've asked 3 pharmacists & none of them could suggest an alternative replacement product.

Consider mixing 1 drop of alcohol with 1 drop of white vinegar and placing the mixture into the ears after they get wet. The alcohol and acid in the vinegar help prevent bacterial growth.

My vet told me to get BurSol for my dog's feet, as she keeps biting them. Would this be the same solution as for swimmer's ear? Is it for an allergic reaction?

It must be for a skin condition like excema, Linda. The powders for skin treatment are not the same chemical makeup as the eardrops.

Can't find any in the TO area. We've been using the powder for over a year for our dog's feet and it works. As noted above, any and all pharmacists I've asked don't have an alternative. I hope they bring it back on the market soon.

a pharmacist told me to subsitute with dettol or use epsom salts. i use the powder, like most of you, for my dogs paw issues. vet said no to dettol an epsom salts but nothing else in its place. need to cone the dog and use surolan ointment for sores/issues with paws. clears up a lot faster with the burrosol :(

I dont have the answers for you yet as I only emailed Habers pharmacy with the formulation within the past week. I am hoping to hear from them soon.
give them a call 416-656-9800 and ask.
in the meantime contact GSK for the ingredient list so you are ready.

I got my shipment from Chiron compounding pharmacy in Guelph. Directions are to dissolve 1 tsp in 500 ml water. the solution is then stable for 90 days at room temperature. Not cheap...$56 shipping $9 and HST $8 so total about $73....but worth it in the end. Looks like there are alot of tspns in there so the powder should last a long time. Of course now my dog is not having his usual sores on his paws and the licking has ended...for now anyhow :)
