Americans With Pain Medication Prescriptions: Boycott Cvs (Top voted first)

Updated

Do you know one of the 50 million americans with arthritis? Do you know someone living with painful injuries from an accident? CVS Pharmacy is refusing to fill prescriptions from certain Florida pain doctors. If they can't fill all of my family's prescriptions then they will fill none of them. Nor will I shop at their stores. Join me is sending a message to CVS that pain medications are necessary for many Americans to have some quality of life. We did not choose these conditions or injuries and we do not have a choice to take or not take pain medications. If you or someone you love has chronic pain, then you undetstand the need for these prescription medications to be available and filled. Speak now. Health Petition: Americans with pain medication prescriptions: Boycott CVS

Actually, pharmacists have the right in every state to refuse to fill scripts they believe are not "written in good faith" — a great idea, but not so great when Controlled Substances Hysteria has gripped an entire nation. I remember a few years back, my own pharmacist telling me that she was refusing to refill my sister's script for MAXALT (I didn't write it and only know the drug family, not the individual drugs.) When I questioned her, she said, "I'm glad you came to pick this up doctor"and she told me about the potentially dangerous side effects of excessive use. I believe these were pretty serious ocular effects. I asked her to void the script, which she had already done. My sister an attorney, was very surprised to learn that this pharmacist had the law and the literature on her side. On the other hand, this "safety net" can be abused to allow pharmacists to reject scripts by doc who writes "too many opiate scripts," "write for top; are a quality of benzos," etc. (If NYS was governed my common sense, they would NOT place Schedule IV bento's under Schedule II restrictions, which include no refills, etc.) I'm sure no one wants to hear this and this "escape clause" for R. Phs. has been in effect for at least 20-25 years, without incident. I've receive a few calls about Schedule II scripts I've written, but no pharmacist told me he/she was refusing to fill the script at hand.

To Sandy: I know your post is almost 5 years old, but I had to respond.

If you think that there are doctors who will write a prescription just for money is a myth then you are dumber than a box of hair.

My husband and I were going to a recommended doctor here in Arizona, one of the top (if not THE top) states for doctors who will write unfounded scripts and both of us did need pain meds, I have a bone spur on my tailbone and my husband has bad knees. The person who recommended him was a co-worker (we had just moved here from Missouri).

He barely gave either of us a glance before writing scripts for Hydrocodone, a powerful dosage of which neither of us were candidates for. After a few months and both of us repeatedly asking him for treatment (therapy as well as pain management not nearly as powerful as what he was pushing) and receiving no results we went elsewhere. Within the year his practice was raided by the DEA.

Guess who has no license to practice medicine anymore and is spending his time in prison right now?

We later found out that there were dozens of people who went to him that we worked with, he just assumed we wanted the Vicodin like everyone else.

So if you believe that ALL doctors are above reproach, see above statement regarding said box containing said hair.

Really? Some doctors just write and walk huh? Well, well well. As a chronic pain patient for 12yrs since a car accident I've yet to meet a doctor like that ~ it's a media myth. There was a problem in S. Florida when two felonious brothers were allowed to open pain clinics, hire the doctors and fill the scripts on site. They are closed down and in jail. Not all of their patients were addicts though.
The discriminatory behaviour going on in the US right now, especially in Florida but not only in Florida has to stop.
The rate of addiction with all narcotics [pain medications, cocaine, meth etc] is approx 3% of the population. When you factor in cigs and alcohol that number goes up. Less than 1% of chronic pain patients become addicted to their medicine because you cannot get high off of it if you truly have chronic pain.
We need to treat the reasons people become addicts in the first place. That starts at home. If you have a friend or family member that is an addict - don't go and blame their friends or the drug. The problem resides within the person. If they are determined addicts they will take anything if their drug of choice is not available. The US approach to treating the drug problem here is so backwards is it any wonder we have the highest rate of addiction in the world? Because the war on drugs is a racket as it's handled now. Billions of dollars a year but no drop in addiction rates [this includes all drugs]. While legalization in other countries show the addiction rate drops - studies done over decades. It's maddening what the US does. But to hurt patients in pain and those dying of long term chronic illness or cancer is just shocking and sad.

Too many cooks in the kitchen! CVS has already been found guilty and fined for illegal handling of controlled substances. They are now pounding on innocent people suffering from chronic pain. Withholding pain medication is the same as starving a baby. The people attempting to withholding pain medication have never been in pain - yet. Addiction is the normal reaction to controlled substances. Addiction can be treated. Chronic pain cannot be alleviated. Suicides precipitated by withholding effective pain medication cannot be reversed. Martinsville, Virginia supposedly had the highest amount of opiates dispensed per person than anywhere else in the USA. In my opinion, Martinsville, VA is the most law-abiding city in the country. Nevertheless, they are suffering beatings for obeying the law! People with chronic pain do not share their medicines. They protect them because they need them. People with chronic pain do not feel high when they take their medicines. They experience pain relief. Today's emphasis must be directed at illegal trading and recreational users. The physicians have not created this problem.

Unfortunately, from other posts I've read, it doesn't seem that the problem in Florida is only with CVS, but many other drug stores, as well.

Has anyone found out why they don't want to fill prescriptions from certain doctors? Is there some reason for it?

CONTACT YOUR STATE LICENSING BOARD. IF YOU HAVE A LIGITIMATE PRESCRIPTION WRITTEN BY A BONAFIDE DOCTOR (M.D. PHD, EVEN P.As WORKING UNDER A LICENSED DOCTOR AND A PHARMACY WHO MAKES MOST OF THEIR INCOME FROM PHARMACEUTICAL SALES. THEY ARE VIOLATING STATE AND FEDERAL LAW. BOYCOTTING IS FINE, BUT GET TO THE ROOT OF THE PROBLEM. YOU FOLKS IN FLORIDA ARE BEING NOT ONLY PUNISHED, BUT DENIED ACCESS TO A STATE AND FEDERALLY LICENSED VENDOR. THAT IS ALSO A VIOLATION OF YOUR CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS. HAS ANYONE TALKED TO AN ATTORNEY? ALSO, TALK TO YOUR INSURANCE COMPANY, IF YOU ARE LUCKY ENOUGH TO HAVE ONE. CVC IS ONE OF THE NATIONS LARGEST PHARMACY CHAINS, AND IT IS ONLY THAT POWER THAT MAKES THEM ABLE TO PICK AND CHOOSE. CHANCES ARE YOUR INSURANCE MAY BE ABLE TO HELP; ESPECIALLY IF THEY DEEM YOUR PRESCRIPTIONS VALID AND PAY THE BILL. THE ONLY WAY A PHARMACY WOULD HAVE A LEAGLE AND JUST CAUSE FOR DENYING TO FILL A PRESCRIPTION FROM A LEGIT M.D. IS IF THEY REFUSE TO FILL YOUR MEDICATION TYPE TO EVERYONE, AND FROM ANY/ALL DOCTORS. THIS IS WHY THERE ARE STATE REGULATORS. THE SAME FOLKS THAT SHUT DOWN THE PILL MILLS, CAN WARN, CITE, FINE, AND CLOSE A PHARMACY FOR VIOLATIONS. WE DO HAVE A "PATIENTS BILL OF RIGHTS" IN THIS COUNTRY THAT SAY'S ALL PERSONS WILL HAVE ACCESS TO PAIN MEDICATION IF IT IS PRESCRIBED IN A MANNER CONSISTENT WITH THE PATIENTS NEEDS AND IS PRESCRIBED BY A DOCTOR IN GOOD STANDING. BUT FIRST, DO NO HARM. CVC IS JUST PLAIN BREAKING THE LAW, BUT THEY ARE A GIANT AMONG THE COMMON MAN/WOMAN AND USUALLY THATS ENOUGH TO WIN IN THIS PITIFUL WAR ON PAIN MANAGEMENT. GOOD LUCK.
