Androgel And Abdominal Pain

Updated

I started on AndroGel about 2 months ago. I am getting pain on the right side of my abdomen. Had to go to ER 2X ran test. 2 CT scans with and without contrast. Everything looks normal. But pain is still there. I suspect it might be the Androgel but not sure because even after discontinuing (on my own) still had some pain. Then when I re continued pain seemed to increase. Pain is a sharp stabbing pain. That comes and goes. I am hesitant to tell my doctor because I fear he might just cut me off. And i really feel more energy and stronger erection while on Androgel.
I am 37 and my last blood test my test level was 335
Has anyone had the same experience? If I switch to other product will I likely have same problem?

Hi Oscar - stomach pain is actually considered one of the more serious side effects of Androgel. I think it would be advisable for you to report this to your doctor ASAP, because they will most likely need to taper you down and/or prescribe a different product. More details can be viewed on the page for Testosterone Details. I hope this helps and best wishes!

Thank you for replying and advise. New update***
I went to see the urologist today and he did not say much when i told him that i was not sure if Androgel is causing the pain. He thinks it might be kidney stones, moving in and out of ureters. Thats why pain comes and goes, He is ordering tests.
I am more convinced it is the Androgel. I get the impression that the doctors i'm seeing don't know much about the subject.
The Urologist told me that he didn't think that my test level was not too low (335) for a 37 year old? This number is while on inject-able once a month
normal is between 348-1197.
I told him with androgel I can get erections, still kind of weak because I need more, but i can get it hard again.
After the consultation he said he would recommend two packs of Androgel 10mg daily instead of one. Or an inject able twice a month. I think he must have changed his mind after I asked him what would be considered normal range for a man my age. Do you think that it could be the Alcohol that's in the gel that could cause the pain? I have been searching the web for anybody with same problem, but can not.

I don't see how alcholol in the AndroGel would be causing the stomach pain. From what I was able to gather the pain sounded like a reported side effect of the drug - definitely follow the doctor's instruction to check for Kidney stones / etc, but stay on top of them if your symptoms are not going away. If you feel increased pain or any other side effects after increasing the dosage then it must be the med. It isn't always easy for docs to say 100% if it's the med since each person's body can react differently. But I hope it works out for you! Keep me posted...

Yup. I can't take it anymore. After 3 days it feels like my stomach and intestines are all still and tight with some burning. And it takes 3-6 days after using it to get back to normal.

About two weeks after starting Androgel I began having trouble stomach pains with vomiting and loss of appetite. At the time, the drug monographs did not list this as a side effect. Saw two different stomach specialist who looked down my stomach and ran every test we could think of. They all were negative and after losing a year of my life, saw a new doctor who allowed me to do my own shots of testosterone enanthate. The initial conversion did not go well but about two weeks later the pains vanished.

I do not recommend androgel to anyone. It is expensive, washes off, and kind if like using a ouiga board for accurate dosage. I also suspect stomach pains are much more common than the manufacturer admits and that it is the alcohol that causes them. Rubbing alcohol seems to do the same thing after a few days.

Word to the wise is to keep a close eye on your hematocrit because if it gets too high you are at greater risk if a heart attack or stroke. Very few doctors seem to understand anything about hormone therapy, feedback loops, and how loss of Lh and Fs hormones regulate glucose levels. Too much sugar can cause it to temporarily drop too low, particularly when sleeping, and make you feel totally trashed for several days.
