Amox is used for strep throat (in my case) Its an antibiotic. Does anyone have tips on ways to take the pill. its a bit hard for me to swallow due to the size, even if I break it in half.

@ #20: Amox/Augmentin in suspension form DOES have to be refrigerated. So before you start thinking you know it all and make fun of others it would be great to check the facts.

I agree, this idiot is the type of person to give false information out and could get someone hurt. Idiots like this should not be on these sites giving out info. Good post # 21.

#28 If you start having stomach trouble with any antibiotic, be sure to take a probiotic such as achidophilius (sp). My daughter didn't do this when she started having diareaha once and ended up having a C-Dif problem in her intestines!

I find the best way to swallow a larger pill is to put it into a teaspoon, pour pure maple syrup over it and take the spoonful of syrup and pill into mouth. I've noticed that the sweetness of the maple causes more saliva to form in mouth thus making it easier to swallow the large pill. Of course, some bad G.I. bacteria thrive on the sweetness, so don't overdo it with the sweet snacks. Back off while on the medication. You'll be defeating the purpose of the antibiotic if you continually eat sweet stuff a lot each day. The same holds true for alcohol, back off if you really want to get well! If no success with the syrup idea, try eating something a bit bulkier that will accustom your throat to swallowing. (Perhaps a bagel?) Whatever your tastes are. I note that upon getting up first thing in A.M. I can't swallow as good until I've had something to eat first, then I take the pill. Hope this helps.

I've been sick for 7 months with some type of lung infection I have been through Prednisone, Montelukast, Singulair, Ventolin, Promethazine, Codine, Levoflaxine... ect. The list literally goes on. I've had A LOT of bad side effects from most of these meds resulting in only going back to the doctor and them prescribing me even more meds. I am actually still having side effects from Prednisone and Levoflaxin which I have last taken 4 months ago. Now I am being prescribed this AMOX TR-K CLV, which I am looking at right now as I am typing this. I though that since I'v had such bad side effects from almost every medicine I have been prescribed. That I should look up this drug. And come to find all of these people suffering. So I came to a conclusion. Most of you are saying that you had these bad side effects and have gone back to the doctor and they just proscribe you even more meds to help you cope with the side effects. Which puts more money into their pockets. That is my theory. Yes, the medicine does work. BUT they have that little bit that gives you ANOTHER problem resulting in you coming back and being prescribed something else. Makes sense to me.

I have taken 3 tablets so far with no ill effects and I am usually sensitive to strong pain meds and medications known to cause stomach upset. I did have a snack with the pill. This medicine was prescribed for a cat bite (stray) on my forearm.

to # 9 named (anon), can you try taking half tab at time with milk? Milk usually helps them go down pretty good. At least me anyway. Worth a try if water don't work.

To carl.

I find that cold liquids make it very difficult to swallow pills.
In my time of taking those large pills... I find that taking them with hot cocoa or something warm, makes it a bit easier to swallow. The warmth relaxes the throat. Can't even feel the pill when it goes down that way.

PS. You shouldn't take expired pills. And I don't think they would work for just a cold anyways.
All expired pills are supposed to be properly disposed of.

# 12, yes that is very true too. Excellent. I guess if one don't want to do the warm thing, then the cold milk has worked for me, but yes, excellent on the warm cocoa as that has totally worked excellent too. Good job. As for the expired pills, that is replies I got too from others so they are no longer here.

according to the pharmacy directions that I received with my prescription, the pill can be chewed or crushed in order to take them, as long as you follow it with a FULL glass of water or liquid.

Tess
My throat has been very dry also. I plan to ask the dr to not prescribe this antibiotic in the future.

Different antibiotics work in different ways for different people. Sometimes there can be side effects, as with most meds. But for most, this is a very effective and good antibiotic med and used properly following the prescribed directions, it does work. And also of course when the full prescription is taken. Have a happy and blessed Easter all.
