TL;DR - how do you work around "no narcotics allowed" medical evaluations? Hi, I'm supposed to be going for a battery of check ups next week at the Mayo GI clinic for chronic GI pain (20+ years). However I've just been told I cannot be on any narcotic when they do the diagnostics. I understand why that is but that's not the issue. I asked how other pain patients have worked around this strict limitation and she just kept repeating (like a robot) "you aren't a patient, I'm not allowed to give advice". No matter how I tried to frame the question, she refused to advise. FFS. So, how the hell do I do that? I'm terrified of being off oxy for any period. Also my pain doc, whilst "flexible" and open to suggestion, doesn't inspire confidence w...

I see lots of people here who need a cheaper alternative to Suprep. The Mayo Clinic recommends 8 Bisacodyl(Ducolax) tablets and 2 bottles of Magnesium Citrate split over 2 doses. This is just as good as Suprep and produces the same result. Many other clinics have similar recommendations. Do an internet search for "Ducolax and Magnesium Citrate bowel prep instructions". In my opinion, Suprep is just a convenience. The end result for either method is the same. You take laxatives and drink clear fluids until nothing comes out but clear fluids. It's not rocket science. ## Thank you for providing this information, William! I am sure that it will help many. But, before anyone follows these instructions, please check with your doctor and make sure that it is safe for you to do so. ...

Can I take Doxycycline 100 mg tablets if I have a sulfa allergy? ## Hi Carol, according to an article I read from the Mayo Clinic, Doxycycline is not listed as a sulfa drug, so you should be okay to take it as prescribed. I also cross referenced the Wikipedia page on Sulfonamides, and it too did not list Doxycycline. If you have other allergies or sensitivities, I'd just double check the inactive ingredients as well to ensure that there is nothing else in there that could disagree with you. If you can refer to the National Drug Code (NDC) printed on your prescription label it should be pretty easy to find the list of inactive ingredients. I hope this helps and feel free to write back!

My regular doctor left the clinic I have been at since 2010. New doctor at same clinic wants to wean me off my daily 280mg of methadone in just 4 weeks time. Have been on this dose for 25+ years... Mayo clinic, and my original doctor from Hawaii and clearance from two cardiologist have said no reason to stop at this point and no risk. Mistake was to not check this new doctor out first who I have since discovered is notorious for pulling this on patients for no reason. This happened conveniently for this doctor on a Friday..... can't even try to see another doctor until Monday...will also contact a health attorney.... ## Unfortunately, a health attorney will not likely do much good. No doctor is obligated to prescribe you anything, or treat you, at all, unless you're in life thre...

I had a seizure when 13 years old and put on dilantin. Had 2 more seizures till I was 21 and no more. I am now 61 years old. So it has been 40 years and no seizures. Mayo clinic md said per eeg I can have a seizure if I don't take seizure meds (?). From there he weaned me off dilantin and put me vimpat. I have been fully on vimpat for 1.5 months. My walking is bad - due to my cerebellum, which is bad due to the dilantin. Since on vimpat my unnormal gait has changed with different unnormal attributes. I have recently acquired tinnitus.... I am a buzzing bee. Unsure if it's from the vimpat or other reasons. I am trying to see my gp and neurologist about this - but still waiting for some questions answered. Like to my gp's nurse - should I see my gp 1st or do you want to refer ...

Has anyone else gotten severely dry skin while taking welchol? I've had mildly dry skin all my life, but since getting on welchol about 9 months ago, my finger tips get so dry they crack. ## The Mayo Clinic has quite an extended list of side effects pertaining to this drug, but oddly enough, I can't seem to find any side effects of WelChol (Colesevelam) that relate to dry skin. Maybe you can see if there's anything listed there that might be in line with what you're experiencing: mayoclinic.com/health/drug-information/DR600465/DSECTION=side-effects Learn More: WelChol Details The only conclusion I can reach is that the medication may be making you dehydrated at a much quicker rate than you might usually be. So drinking lots of water may help lessen the severity of dry sk...

the one pill people take to stop allergies and asthma, it prevents it rather than treats it ## Not sure if this is the one you're thinking of but Uniphyl (Theophylline) might be the pill you are looking for. Excerpt from the Mayo Clinic: You take this bronchodilator in pill form every day. It's especially helpful for relieving your nighttime symptoms of asthma. But theophylline may cause side effects, such as nausea and vomiting, severe abdominal pain, diarrhea, acid reflux, confusion, fast or irregular heartbeat, and nervousness. If you're taking theophylline, get regular blood tests to make sure you're getting the correct dosage.

I have had severe Arthritis, for along time. I hurt in all my joints all the time badly. I also have High Bloodpressure, one hip replaced and one knee raplacement. Arthritis is in my family. At one time I was diagnosed for Lupus and after being treated for it , I was told (Mayo Clinic)by the doctors that I do not have Lupus. Can that happen? Finally can Methotrexate help me? I would prefer not to take steroids. ## Hello, Shashi! How are you? Yes, it is possible that you were misdiagnosed as having Lupus. As to the Methotrexate, it depends on what type of arthritis you have, but some people have gotten very good results from it for rheumatoid arthritis. Today it's been 3 weeks since my last dose of the methylprednisolone dose pack. I am finally getting some more sleep, but the side effects I am most worried about is my elevated heart rate. Minimal exercise sends it over 100 bpm. When can I expect this to get better? ## You heart rate should go up whenever you are being active. The Mayo Clinic provides a formula for calculating it, subtract your age from 220 and that will give you the maximum heart rate you should hit during exercise/activity. For example, I am 45, subtracting that from 220 gives me 175, so when being active, or exercising, my heart rate should not exceed that number. It is far more dangerous to have a very elevated heart rate, when you are at rest. Have you checked your resting rate? ## My resting rate is on the 80...

WHAT DOES THIS DRUG DO? WHAT IS HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE? ## Hi Carolyn, Amlodipine is used alone or in combination with other medications to treat high blood pressure and chest pain (angina). It lowers blood pressure by relaxing the blood vessels so the heart does not have to pump as hard. Learn More: Amlodipine Details According to the Mayo Clinic, high blood pressure is a common condition in which the force of the blood against your artery walls is high enough that it may eventually cause health problems, such as heart disease. Blood pressure is determined by the amount of blood your heart pumps and the amount of resistance to blood flow in your arteries. The more blood your heart pumps and the narrower your arteries, the higher your blood pressure. I hope this info helps to answer your q...
