Weight Gain On Opiates

I've always been very very slim, almost underweight. When I was 21 I got hooked on oxycoton & gained a ton of weight quickly. I've been on methadone for 5 yrs now & have gained even more weight. Will switching to suboxone help me lose it.

Hi Jenna, I was on methadone 4 almost 5 years and gained 50 lbs. a lot of people have gained weight while on it. ( seen it myself) I lost all the weight once I got off the methadone. I'm now on suboxone, and, no weight gain with it. I'm a petite person 2, and, I' am at my weight, where I was b 4 I got on methadone. Weight gain is 1 of the side effects, but, they don't tell u that.

I just want to clarify why weight gain happens on opiates, it is because they are essentially a downer that slow your metabolism. Thus, you burn far fewer calories than you did, before you were taking them.

That is also why the weight tends to fall off, once someone stops using them.

This is a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation.
