I have given this great thought since July 4, 2014 and have decided it is important to share our experience with Vyvance. Our 22 year old son had been taking vyvance for 4 weeks, consistently. He and some friends went to the beach for the day and were consuming Alcohol. When it came time to drive home from the beach my son would not relinquish his keys to his friends and went into a rage. He was physical and verbally abusive to his friends. His friends called us stating that our son was scaring them and was totally out of control. Fortunately, we were able to get him home. The night turned into the worst night of my entire life. We wound up calling the police and I honestly thought that I would need to Bakeract him into a facility. He destroyed two of our kitchen chairs, smashed them into pieces. He was enraged, belligerent, wired, and more frighteningly if you spoke to him on the phone you would not know he was under the influence. We asked him to walk one of the grout lines in our kitchen which he did forwards and backwards. It was if he was violently manic. He was finally able to settle down around mid-night. He was up the next morning at 9:00, still nasty, and non-remorseful. He remembered every detail from the prior evening. I then started to suspect that it was the combination of medication and alcohol, which evidently, with all the information I have been able to find it seems to be a common occurrence. When my son was 13 we tried him on wellbutrin and the same behavior was present. Meaness with no remorse. Here is the piece that is very concerning to me. This incident occurred on 7/4/14, on Monday July 7 a letter from our pharmacy (costco) was sent to my son from the manufacturer of Vyvance. A letter of warning and all the side effects of the drug. I believe that there are bigger issues with this medication than anyone is aware of at this point and that the company is trying to limit their liability with the receipt of this letter. Please let everyone who you know uses this drug to be very very careful.

My husband has been on Vyvanze for 5 yrs. he was also on Cymbalta, Wellbutrin and now Fetzima. The past year has been horrible! He also chose to drink beer and tequila with all of this plus heart meds, cholesterol meds, thyroid meds, metformin. OMG! Recently, he totally lost it at a friends house. He screamed, raged etc. he doesn't remember anyof it except for our friend telling him to leave. His psychiatrist is now detoxing him off cymbalta and Wellbutrin. He has been totally off Vyvanze for 5 days and is already calmer and nicer. The goal is to get him off of ALL of this crap, except for Fetzima. The issue now is that his blood pressure is always high....possibly a side effect of withdrawals from Cymbalta. The psych broke his Fetzima dosage in to 2 separate doses. 40 MGS in the morning and 40 MGS. In the afternoon. The psych says he may be "ultra metabolizing" the Fetzima. What a nightmare! Has anyone heard or experienced this?

*UPDATE* I am an adult. I just got completely off of vivance after taking it three years. I titrated down from 75 starting in feb where I was smoking like a train and angry anxious no feelings or affection no desire to be around others and depressed ZERO ENERGY to 50 smoking less and less of all other dide effects....And then to 20 then ZERO side effects. Smoke free. Anger free and am slowly getting my NORMAL FREAKING ENERGY BACK! Lost a relationship but it wasn't worth my time anyway since I told him I was withdrawing off of this stuff and he might as well have been taking it because he became way too much for me to deal with without the medication. My youngest is entirely off of his concert a or any add med and I am homeschooling him. He tried vyvanse and became ultra whiny, ocd and paranoid so YES those can be side effects. We both gained like 30 pounds each stopping all these trashy meds but I think that is our liver recovering from this poison. My withdrawals were terrible but I did it! My last daily pill was April 19! I tried 20 last week because I was SO FATIGUED for two months but it was awful. After sleeping two days after that last one I have slowly gained my energy back and am having more good hours than bad!! It can be done! Also! Memory is much better. If you are taking this be SURE to take magnesium when you come down and calcium I'm the mornings. They deplete your body causing anxiety and snger!!

My son is 12 and I will be 40 at the end of this week. We are okay taking Vyvanse...or better than when we take nothing to treat ADHD-Combined type. My daughter, however, is a totally different story. She emotionally distanced herself and withdrew from even being hugged. It hurt me and I watched her carefully but what you described is very similar to the effect it had on her. Scary stuff when it's your child. WT hay! Our doctor recommended taking her off immediately and I waited a couple extra days for the Rx to clear her system before returning to titration. Sigh.. She takes 18 mg of Concerta and since it's summer break is on a medication vacation! If she doesn't need to concentrate, I'd rather have her sunny disposition any day than the solemn child she is on any ADHD Rx. She's pretty spunky and bubbly no matter what. If you want my advice, always, ALWAYS get a second opinion. If you have a gut feeling, trust it. I also found we benefit greatly from behavior therapy. This is a commonly recommended treatment plan for ADHD and I can tell you that it WORKS for my children and me. I hope this helps. There is nothing worse than watching your child emotionally detach from you. It's that attachment that nurtures and protects them and it's scary to see them push away something you know they need. God bless you! I'm praying for your family and you.

I know this is years late but my son has been on vyvance for 1 year 30 mg. he was doing good until 3 weeks ago. I think I found the answer. I started him on Youngevityabetteryou products 3 months ago and he got so much better but I kept him on the vyvance for school. I think the youngevity products helped him so much he needs to come off of the vyvance because it's not needed. I'm going to test it for the next week and see. So far this weekend he's off for two days and no more irritability he's happy as can be.

Honey I know, it is the worst thing for relationships ever, you've got to stop taking it and get a replacement medication- it didn't get any better until I stopped taking them.
Almost lost my amazing boyfriend by being so unpleasant- we hadn't identified where the aggression was coming from until I saw this thread. Thank goodness. Trust me, it will get better.

I am an adult with ADD. I just started using Vyvanse about a year ago. It was working great and the only side effect I had was dry mouth, but now I feel Angry all the time! I had no Idea why until I did a web search and found many other has similar problems. I am only on 30MG. it has helped me in the other parts of my life where I needed it but this anger is not helping my marriage at all. I just have no Idea what to do.

I agree with u on every level u just described my 10 yr old son while on medicine, he hates school his classmates and says he want to kill them, he feels no-one wants to be around him, he's paranoid, when I talk to him in public he acts as though he's embarrassed by saying Mama be quiet u talking to loud they can hear u then he ducks and start looking as if everyone is paying us attention, he lgoes me, but while on meds he says I don't love u when I ask him, then he realize what he's said or did then he continusly apologizes I'm taking him off the meds

I am so glad to see this entry. I am and add mom with two adhd children 7 and 19. My older one has so much anger towards me for having him and my younger one on adhd meds. My younger one is doing horribly in school and is on the highest dose of concerta I have been trying a raw dairy and grass fed meat diet and supplements but have just run put of money for ANY of the medicine or good foods. I myself have been on vyvanse bc of cfs and ptsd. I go to the VA. EVERY MONTH they screw up getting my medicine to myself and it exacerbates my ptsd. Some VA guy put me on venlafaxine and Omg it was HORRIBLE. I have been going through withdrawals for that for two months and now they are messing with my vyvanse again. I want to get off of it completely but I'm so fatigued without it. Now it has been two days of withdrawal plus my younger son is off his meds and I can't send him to school. I am so depressed and upset and helpless as to what to do bc doctors only seem to be able to repeat what these drug companies say about themselves rather than help. I put my youngest on intuniv that I had on hand from his prescription that I didn't want to give him if possible. It us helping a bit but he is going through withdrawals from concerta....happy thanksgiving to us! I hope to get us all off of this CRAP!!

Yes- this drug made me feel insane. I was quitting smoking at the time and attributed the aggression to that. Then the psychosis. When I stopped taking vyvanse it became clear I could be myself again. I was so frightened that was the new me. This drug works for some and doesn't for others. For an unfortunate few, the side effects are WHOA horrible.

It Is Not Your Child Or Your Imagination!!! It IS the Vyvanse!!! I have adult ADHD and I took the dose prescribed by my doctor. The first month not much changed except I experienced tics and a total loss of focus..
My doctor claimed the tics were already there(I wanted to tic inside-and just didn't know it), the meds just "uncovered" them, or brought them out.
Not True, but ok- manageable... He upped it 10 mg after that first month when I complained about the tics, and odd feelings of OCD which I've never had before...
Again- he said I already had these, the drug just "uncovered" the OCD...
Totally Not True...
One Day at the higher dosage and I experienced Rage and feelings that the world was against me... And crushing depression... That has lasted for 4 days with no more meds- just that one first dose...
I am very patient and loving, and solid as a person. These Outrageous Feelings were Caused by The Vyvanse...
Do Not Let Your Doctor Override Your Own Good Sense. It Is Not Your Son...
Advocate for him...
I am Avocating for you both Right Now, and anyone else who reads this- By Telling You:
Take him to another doctor to see how to get him off the meds safely...
Do not just take him off cold turkey- this drug has terrible emotional side effects...
Adderall or Concerta usually do not.
Try one of those for your son with a different doctor, I lost my insurance and was trying to find something cheaper...
This was free for me- But Still Not Worth The Cost...
It Is Not Your Child- Get him a Doctor That Will Listen To YOU BOTH!
Thanks, I do care, because a long time ago, I had parents that were faced with what your faced with, Thank God they Found me the Right Help...
I am fabulous today! I'm a writer, a mother of two, and a wife. Still have ADHD. But I am creative and Working to make the world a better place! Good Luck! Stay Strong!
Your Son will be amazing, just Trust Yourself To Know Your Child. He's In There And He Needs Your Parenting To Get Him The Help He Needs... I Hope you read this...

I'm 19 and have been taking 20 mg Vyvanse for two years now. Compared to others' responses saying they became aggressive since taking Vyvanse, I've noticed I become angry very rarely... Sometimes I even think I should be angry, but am not. I also have the side-affect of being less hungry all the time, but still the medicine helps me a lot. I can get a lot more done like homework because of it.

I'm so sorry that happened. How are things now? I took Vyvanse for about two months and became so unbearable, even to myself.

I've been taking 70 mg vyvanse for 4 years now. I like it for about 4 hours, but after that, I feel nothing like myself. I have a difficult time expressing any emotions. Its terrible. I become the opposite of myself and I can't sleep even after 14 hours of taking it. I take it to get through days of work and little sleep, but its merely an addiction and I hate it. I wish I never took it.

Hello, my name is Marshall. I am a junior at Creekside High. I used to be on vyvanse for A.D.D. 2 years ago. When I was on it, I was on it for 4 years. I NEVER experienced these symptoms. No addiction (quite frankly I hated taken the stupid pill), no tics, no tourettes, no irritability or aggressiveness. When I went off the drug, I did it because I thought I didn't need it anymore. I experienced no withdrawal symptoms. I have gone back on it for academic purposes and am succeeding in school. I think some of the accusations against vyvanse are a bit outlandish. However it is a very powerful drug and should be given the utmost care when taken. Part of the reason I don't experience some of these effects COULD be because of my tolerance to amphetamine from years of taking it, although I never experienced any of those symptoms when I started. I am healthy and very happy the only thing that could explain my resilience to the drugs side effects is my strong norwegian blood, although I highly doubt it. Ha!

Austin: Good for you for taking your son off the Vyvanse. I believe that the withdrawal symptoms should be gone very shortly, and that they're far easier to deal with than the side effects he experienced while taking the Vyvanse. NOBODY should be that angry and hostile, nor should anybody have to deal with a person who behaves in that fashion.
My son will never have to worry about being heavy (he's skinny as a rail - but still considered healthy)...but his appetite is much better since we took him off Vyvanse and switched him to Dexedrine, and he's growing like a bad weed.
It's been nearly a year since we switched, and so far this school year we've had TWO major incidents with suspensions, as opposed to TWENTY-FIVE the year before, when he was still taking Vyvanse. This year, his teachers report that 'he's an absolute joy to have in the classroom' and that 'we love having him in our class, he's such a neat kid'. Last year, he was described as 'an exceptionally angry and difficult child' and 'unteachable and destined for juvenile detention'. Huge changes, wouldn't you say?!!!!
My personal experience is that all 13 and 14 - year old boys are lazy.. it's called being teenagers LOL.
But seriously, there are at least a dozen other medications available to treat ADHD. Try another one.. if it doesn't work then try another, and another, and another, if necessary, until you find the one that works best for your son. The important part is to keep trying and don't give up hope! Take care :-)

Anthony: You're mistaken about the medications. They are NOT narcotics; in fact they're the exact opposite. ADHD medications-- with the exception of Strattera -- are amphetamines.

My 13 year old son has been taking vyvance for about 4 years and the side affects are horrific my son became a very unsocial child. He was always angry and aggressive to everyone. I also notice that he lost a lot of weight and was not growing. It completely ruined his appetite When I decide to take him off the withdrawl's were even worse. He was depressed and angry and lazy for about a month.
