How To Stop Taking Losartan (Page 3)

Updated

I had taken losartan50/hctz 12.5 for 10 years, In recently years I suffered dry coughing and bad running nose allergy. I found out this is the side effect of losartan. Cutting the dose to half, changing to a water pill.. did not solve the problem. Over this holiday I developed bronchitis and was quite ill. I had very bad coughing, losing voice, sinus infection, nose bleeding, etc. I stopped taking Losartan to avoid further complications. I notified my doctor that I will check my blood pressure if the record is not over 140-90. I will keep the Losartan off. What else can I do?

Wow, same experience on .50 for 6 months hiccups for a week. Dr. pulled me off Lorastan. Reflux was raised and is being looked at as a possibility meanwhile with weight loss from hiccups the BP is normal. Similar issue, the medication and silent reflux have some shared symptoms. Waiting on the outcome. Best wishes.

Re: muchin (# 9) Expand Referenced Message

There are many other bp meds that can be prescribed. I had a horrible cough on Losartan for 10 yrs. My doc ignored my complaints until I told her I felt suicidal b/c of the coughing. She changed me to Norvasc, a calcium channel blocker. My bp is normal, my cough is starting to subside. I had to do a lot of research online to find out that ARBS can make a small subset of people cough just like the ACE inhibitors do. I am furious with my doc for not helping me until I insisted something was not right. You have to advocate for yourself because no one else is going to. You could change docs. Good luck.

Re: sandy 125 (# 43) Expand Referenced Message

Hi Sandy, did you ask your Dr.? If he says no, Well, it's your body. I cut mine in half ane kept a log of my bp readings. Found out the readings weren't much different and then I noticed the edema lessened some. When I quit after a month it also didn't seem different until my Dr. yelled at me and said I needed to get it under control and that caused anxiety I didn't have so it then went up. I am still not taking it. Hope you can work through this. I suffered a whole year.

My husband has been on losartan for a year or so and has developed a cough that will not go away and has had some issues with breathing in the middle of the night. He thinks it is a cold and I think it a side effect of medicine. It has been going on for over 4 weeks. I am afraid if he keeps taking the medicine it is going to kill him. He thinks if he stops he will have a heart attack. What would you do if it were you? We went to the clinic but have not talked to his regular doctor yet he has an appt in a few weeks. but I am afraid for his life.

If you don't have an appointment for awhile see if you can talk to the nurse and share your concerns. I looked up all the side effects online and saw that all my symptoms were from the med. They stopped withing 48 hours of taking. Do you have a BP monitor that you can keep a record of your readings?

My wife has been coughing for a very long time. Me being a IT Tech, and analyzing everything to find out what could be wrong, I started doing a lot of online research. POW! I nailed it when I found this site. It was Losartan that was making her cough like this. It's drying her silly... If I'm working on a computer and installing windows 7/10, ect, and the windows is running fine, and after I install something, the windows starts to not run so good, then I'll backtrack myself to see what I have done, that may cause the prob to show its face.

Re: KAREN (# 50) Expand Referenced Message

I am not Linda...but if you go to your nearest Health food Store and ask for the person who works in the Supplement area you should be able to talk to someone who is quite knowledgable to lead you to the right product. There are many. Look online. Just search...supplements to lower blood pressure. Or natural alternatives to BP meds. Don't just stop your BP meds though. You have to wean and get advice from Dr. unless he refuses to take you off . Maybe your reading aren't dangerous.

I HAVE ASTHMA, AND I COUGH A LOT ANYWAY, BUT THE LOSARTAN HAS MADE IT WORSE,AND MY ASTHMA AND ALLERGY DOCTOR, TOLD ME TO HAVE MY DOCTOR PUT ME ON A MEDICATION THAT DOESN`T MAKE ME COUGH! I`M STARTING TO BELIEVE THAT NATURAL REMEDIES FROM A HEALTH FOOD STORE WOULD BE SAFER, WITH LESS SIDE AFFECTS! SINCE BEING ON LOSARTAN I FEEL LIKE I HAVE A COLD ALL OF THE TIME!

Hello Linda...looks like things are going really well for you; and what I love best is that you took charge of your health and "made the turnaround." I am curious what supplement you bought in the health food store that had such quick results? Please feel free to say what it is...there are no medication police that I am aware of :-)

Re: Darle (# 26) Expand Referenced Message

Hi Darle...I am so sorry you had to go through this! Sounds like the new manufacturer of Losartan may have different fillers from the former one you were on. I have noticed new side effects from the same drug but only when there was a change in the supplier. I mentioned this to a pharmacist, he told me it was the questionable fillers sometimes being used that were the problem. I have never trusted BigPharma, nor any of the affiliated manufacturers, suppliers...And after 10 months of my own recent trials with local docs trying to figure out what was wrong with me, happily prescribing a wide variety of drugs, I now include most of medical professions in the list of untrusted. What happened to the days when Drs obeyed the oath they took by "first do no harm?"

I have the same symptom. I bought a heart monitor. It showed an inverted P wave. And is PVC (premature ventricular contraction). Mine start in the early morning until 9 through 11 probably depending on what I ate the day before.
