Does Anyone Take Fentanyl Patch And It Burns My Arm (Top voted first)

Updated

My Fentanyl patch burns my arm and makes my arm and fingers hurt terribly. I put it on my back and the pain was so bad I ended up at the hospital. When I took a breath my left side hurt so bad I could only take little breaths - Did anyone else have this problem? My doc said it is the adhesive I put over the patch, otherwise the fentanyl patch falls off in 1 day.

If it is the MYLAN brand, you have developed an allergy to that brand and that brand only. I actually blister from the MYLAN brand.

It probably is an allergy to either the tape or the specific brand

Your pharmacist will back you up. I tell everyone to use the following as a patch cover. It is a "generic tegaderm"...

Amazon Prime price roll 4-inch x 11 yards: "Smith & Nephew 5466000041 Opsite Flexifix 4 Inch x 11 Yards Transparent Film Dressing" yields 82 patches for $23 = $0.28 each!

More important, the flexifix holds BETTER than Tegaderm! MUCH BETTER!!! Good luck

Hi verwon hope all is well. First, the companys know there patches fall off very fast, they even have for free a patch to cover the fentanyl patch, many people have to use it including even another hospital in my town. The hospital said the ahesive on the overlay caused the pain problem. I do want to add, the doc stayed only 2 minutes her phone rang, she said there was an emergency and never came back. I did find out the breathing problem was from a blood clot, frm one that broke off of a clot in my leg which had gotten into my lung.

It makes my arm hurt without a cover. I now put it on my hip. So far so good.

I am so sorry to hear about the blood clot, Timster.

Are you on anything to prevent it from happening, again?

SO two main things. First, I have suffered from patch "burn" since I tried patches and have narrowed it down to the adhesive. The name brand Duragesic and the generic brand Sandoz use the best adhesive and I had fewer problems as long as I changed them every day. Second, the fatter the area underneath the skin the better and thus the less reaction you will have (I don't know why) so I recommend limiting their application to the mid stomach area on the sides where the most fat is at. The pain you are describing in the chest is NOT from the patch itself, but it is potentially alarming because what I surmise could be happening is that you are slowing your respiration and thus oximetry (oxygen level of the blood normally at 95% or higher) is falling resulting in not enough oxygen to the heart, and thus, assuming you have heart disease in the family, or specific factors for heart disease or any co-morbidities, you could be experiencing chest pain from your heart (what was o.k. at 05% is not o.k. at say 88% and possibly a preexisting but yet undiscovered slightly blocked artery is giving you classic warning signs of heart attack). I would recommend getting a fingertip oximeter available at any drug store and taking measurements while lying down on the bed after waiting a few minutes to calm down - if its below 92% it is the fentanyl lowering your breathing rate and depth. You may or may not adjust to the dose and recover, but many people over 55 simply do not and the resulting sleep issues and disorders that arise from opiate use (central sleep apnea) can result in further right sided heart enlargement and problems. You should decide if you must absolutely have the drug because getting off of fentanyl is next to impossible once you get over doses of 75 mch/hour; it's just too painful for most people to stand (see/search: PAWS)

Hello, Timster! How are you? I'm sorry about the problem that you're having.

That seems very odd, even for using extra adhesive to hold it on. Have you tried consulting another doctor and getting a second opinion?

What did the hospital attribute the problem to?

The FDA classifies this medication as a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation.
